Not really fully back in my planet of the apes fixation yet but I've been thinking how I'm not so sure there wouldn't have been any conflict between Caesar's Apes and the San Francisco Colony ever, even if Koba hadn't pulled a mutiny and attacked the human settlement. I think there would have always been a possibility of violence towards the apes.

We know for example, that the first group the Colony was able to reach once they had power and could use the radio was Alpha-Omega, and we know their mission is to drive the apes to extinction and quote "save humanity". I think it's likely even if the Colony hadn't been under attack, the Colonel would have brought his troops to San Francisco upon hearing about the apes and brought war with him.

And at some point not long after the events of Dawn, we know that the virus began to mutate and cause lasting serious effects in humans. We don't know how much people were travelling in and out of the city of San Francisco, but considering they had food for several hundred people, it seems possible they might be trading food from outside the city? Which means that the virus strain would eventually reach the Colony and the panic from that, from a new outbreak a decade on, I think that would lead to some conflict.

I could see people clamouring for the apes to be driven out of the woods and far away (especially because if the dam became their main source of power, they would have to visit it every now and then for upkeep/maintenance). I've also pondered on the thought that, even without the new strain/mutation, would younger generations be immune to the virus? Would children in the Colony born after the initial outbreak be immune? Because if not that would also lead to conflict. No one wants their children to die.

And I know that humans like Malcolm and Ellie would protest and try to prevent conflict and potential war, but we also know that once Alpha-Omega got involved, no one in the Colony was calling the shots any more. And even without the Colonel's presence, we feel Malcolm's fear in Dawn about the Colony going back to how it was during the initial epidemic, where people were dying and panicking and fighting one another. He seems convinced that the Colony could fall to pieces, that their settlement and people are something delicate that could easily unravel.

I remember rambling about how Dawn is such a tragedy, and it really is, and it feels like maybe there would have always been tragedy, just hovering on the horizon. Because the virus was mutating and ready to rear its ugly head once more, even if Dawn had ended in peace and friendship.

Can't believe mfs be calling him ugly more than 10 times in the book when he's a comically large monchhichi bonobo (he is built compared to real life bonobos, where's the mother nature given twink build? or was it the elk meat he been munching on for 10 years) with the parted wild hair and fluffiness (obsessed, love bonobo hair so much) and softest eyes when his face is relaxed.

He doesn't even look ugly to me; he just needs to stop grimacing and pout with that underbite of his, grumpy ass Pan paniscus. 🐴

Somebody give him an emotional support cat.
