Presentation setup on Friday. Them coconuts.
A contextual shot of our menu mock up.
Next Step.
Next thing we want to do is to make different forms of filling for the coconut. Ice Cream, Pudding and Sorbet. We could line the coconut with chocolate first. We can fill the bottom with fruit and then put in the coconut mixture to set, We are also thinking of ways that we can improve our presentation. Either way we are comfortable with our position within the project so far.
More arrangements.
this got us thinking about how we could improve the set up and what way we want to finally present the food.
This is it.
after placing some of the mixed fruit on top we finally agreed that this is the way we want it to go.
Mint
we borrowed some mint leaves from the counter that would have been used for some iced tea.
Building a scene
When we finally got a space in the cafe we got straight to it.
Serving it up.
after cutting up some mango, lemon and lime we were going to take it to the cafe in college for some photographs. It being 1 o clock though meant that we would have to wait till lunch was over. so the studio worked in the mean time.
It Worked!
after removing the glue, I had to chisel the top piece away from the bottom. When it came off, We were shocked to see how it set just like we had hoped. Now that that has worked, our next one will have something different to it and we will keep building from there.
Almost There
Now that we had our coconut mix made, we wanted to freeze it and see how it sets. I had the idea of freezing it at an angle so that it would set in an opposite angle to the cut on the coconut shell. Todo this I needed to reseal the top piece of the coconut and fill it past the cut line. I asked the technicians in the workshop and hot glue turned out to be the best option. After Glueing and filling the coconut I placed it in the freezer, at a 45 degree angle and left it over night.
BLEND
I have no idea why these were being filmed in portrait mode. Phones shouldn’t be allowed have the camera app open while in portrait.. We added the coconut meat, some coconut milk that we bought across the road and also some of the coconut water that we collected from draining the coconuts. the odd rice like consistency of the meat meant we had to blend it and add a bit more milk than we originally thought.
More than enough.
In the first coconut that was cut, a layer of skin remained on the meat of the coconut We cut up another. This time we just really needed the insides so we just put it through the bandsaw without giving it much thought. We forgot to drain it. I had to grab some foam from the bin and try to direct the coconut milk towards the bin. We did end up with two pretty nice pieces of coconut that we ended up using as little bowls to hold the coconut meat. We made sure the cuts were big enough so that we could peel the thin layer off them with ease. To the Blender!
ONE PIECE
For this we just cut the coconut at an angle and used the offcut as the holder for the main plate. Maybe we could try and have the whole piece stem from its original form?
One Coconut Shell hollowed out. Success
Now that we had our shell, we went back to thinking up ways that we could use it to sell a dessert. just sticking some ice cream inside it (as appealing as it sounds) isn’t exactly anything worth mentioning. Taking into account the strange texture of the coconut meat itself we are thinking of doing something that either contrasts or compliments it like Pudding or a Sorbet.
Removing the flesh of the coconut was not as simple as I had originally hoped. next time I will use Google.. Google knows all.
