Here is the fourteenth iteration of a survey I used to do on LiveJournal and will continue doing until I die because data is neat.
1. What did you do in 2018 that youād never done before?
This year has been infinity years long; Iām pretty sure that I was a literal infant in January and itās all been new ever since. Letās think. Oh! I used a rice cooker! And I went to a book party solo and had a good time regardless. Thereās probably more, but if I think about 2018 too long I will get tired and have to lie down and there are 36 more questions.
2. Did you keep your new yearsā resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I only ever make the one New Yearās resolution, which is to read [x] books in 20xx. Last year I chose 100 and wound up reading 103. It was not actually fun at all, and my therapist very gently suggested I choose a different number this year.
So in 2018, I decided to read 52 books and am ending December with a total of 72. And it was fun. The stuff I read, I read because I liked (though there was a hate-read or three in there too), and it left me time for my writing group, for cooking, for teaching myself trivia and tricks, and so on. I donāt feel less educated or less fancy. I do feel more sane.
Next year: more of the same, please.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Three lovely women I know had babies in the latter half of 2018, any of which could take over the world someday.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No. Was I convinced everyone I loved was about to die all the time regardless? Yes.Ā
5. What countries did you visit?
Fifth year running not leaving the country. Iām working on it.
6. What would you like to have in 2019 that you lacked in 2018?
A diagnosis. A supplementary bookcase. A way to organize my embroidery floss more professionally, because dang.Ā
7. What date from 2018 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The entire last week of September: Brett Kavanaughās testimony, and writing an essay about sexual assault that my mother read, and going to Massachusetts to look at the leaves turn and take forty-eight deep breaths. I still feel like a giant bruise.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I declined to apologize for things I was not actually sorry for or that were not actually my fault. Kills the mood, but boy does it boost your self-esteem.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Being cruel to myself, whether passively or actively. Making people worry. Throwing up on the sleeve of my winter coat, because that had to be dry-cleaned and was a bad time for everyone, not least the dry-cleaners.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Lots of surprisingly nasty colds, and lots of bad brain, and several hangovers, and one (1) bruised rib from somehow falling into the corner of the bed while doing hospital corners. Itās hard to be an embodied consciousness.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
LEGO Harry Potter, facetiously. Bus tickets home, non-facetiously.Ā
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My friends, my parents, G, and myself (sometimes). Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The waiter who gave us free pineapple vodka shots on election night. Annie of Annieās Mac and Cheese - the real MVP.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My friends, my parents, G, and myself (sometimes). The White House. A few folks who hurt me a great deal but who donāt deserve the airtime.Ā
14. Where did most of your money go?
That is the question, huh. Rent, probably! New York is expensive. Honorable mention goes to food. Honorable honorable mention goes to that time I had to pay $1,400 in taxes because our payroll company screwed up royally; I had successfully forgotten that until literally just now.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Fourth of July with Karen et al on a rooftop. Animal Crossing 2019. (WHEN IS IT COMING OUT, NINTENDO. THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO LIVE FOR.) Midterms (fear is a kind of excitement). Did I mention my rice cooker??
16. What song will always remind you of 2018?
"Pegā by Steely Dan, or perhapsĀ āThis Is Americaā by Childish Gambino.Ā
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder, but I think in a useful way. Sadness can be recalibrating.
ii. thinner or fatter? The same, because I am a cartoon character.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer (see question 14).
18. What do you wish youād done more of?
Communicating honestly, even when it was really scary. Sleeping. Writing. Calling my mom, not to mention my grandmother. Letting myself enjoy things simply because they were there to be enjoyed; what else is life for?Ā
19. What do you wish youād done less of?
Worrying, and then worrying about worrying, and then worrying that my worry-based worrying is making me secretly unbearable, and then crying.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent December 25 with my grandma, and Iāll spend January 7 (Orthodox Christmas) doing...something. Church and books will figure in somehow. They always do.
21. Did you fall in love in 2018?
Started here, stayed here.
22. How many one-night stands?
I donāt have a nightstand, but sometimes I use Gās.
23. What was your favourite TV program?
The Good Place for sure, not least because itās one of the only programs I actually watched more than a few episodes of. I am very bad at television.Ā
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didnāt hate this time last year?
Hate is a pretty strong word. Resent, maybe; am saddened by, maybe. Get tired thinking about, maybe.Ā
That said, Iām comfortable hating the smoldering crater that is, and is created by, the GOP.
25. What was the best book you read?
Reservoir 13, or They Canāt Kill Us Until They Kill Us, or Iāll Be Gone in the Dark, or...I should just show you the list, maybe.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
It took 27 years, but I have discovered that I, just like your dad, can get down with Steely Dan.Ā
27. What did you want and get?
I bought myself a trench coat (that was this year, right? This year has been so long.)
28. What was your favourite film of this year?
Eighth Grade and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse both made me feel many things.
29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 27 and went out to dinner with a whole tableās worth of friends. I got cake and flowers and hugs and it was really just kind of perfect.
30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?
Finally Got A Bra That Fitsā¢
In no particular order: therapy, my mom, crocheting, cross-stitching, the New York Times crossword, gummy worms, venting to Karen, coffee.
33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Janelle Monae and Tessa Thompson. Both of them. You canāt make me choose. And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, because itās refreshing not to have already been disappointed by a politician. Thatās super sad, now that Iāve written it out like that!!Ā
34. What political issue stirred you the most?
ICE/refugee detention/child separation/everything and everyone involved.
I always miss someone, usually my parents.Ā
36. Who was the best new person you met?
Maya and Michelle, two true blue office pals.
37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2018:
If youāre afraid, do it anyway.
