so i have a birthday curse. you know all those people who are like “oh no i hate my birthday” but secretly love it? no. i fear my birthday. every year something goes catastrophically wrong. like catastrophically.
one year i broke my wrist. another i accidentally set my hair on fire. one year i was so hungover from the night before that i spent the whole day curled up in bed with a bucket. i plan a party outside, it rains. once the movie theater i’d planned to go to had a bomb threat and was closed for the day. this year i spent my day at the doctor’s. yeah, blood-test birthdays aren’t the best.
which brings me to say: fuck it. you know what, 2016 fucking sucks. but i’m giving myself do-overs now. your birthday isn’t beautiful? congratulations on your new birthday on a day that works; enjoy your cake. you spent your prom sick in bed? guess what i am your new prom date, get dressed up, we’re gonna take a ballroom dance class (many are free) and then go and get ice cream and fries. christmas felt like a joke? ho ho ho july 25th is christmas in july, give out presents, santa; go ice skating and eat snow cones.
we live in a world that gives us one day to get something right. we build it up in our heads and then when the day comes around, we feel oddly empty. that’s just not working and i’m your mom now and i give you permission to make any day as magical as you want it to be. no more waiting for an excuse. this is your excuse. we only have so many days. why only spend a few of them celebrating.
Fun fact: There’s software which can tell a real Pollock painting from an elaborate forgery. How the hell is that possible? Because Pollock’s work contains fractals: infinitely complex, never-ending mathematical patterns that are specific to his work. While everyone thought he was merely dripping paint everywhere randomly like a drunken contractor you hired on Craigslist, he was in fact creating entire worlds.
So how do we know the fractals aren’t there by accident? Well, the later the Pollock painting, the richer and more complex the patterns, and thus the greater its fractal dimension. And there are even more mysteries hiding in his work. It appears that Pollock took advantage of an area of fluid dynamics scientists have only recently thought to study. This phenomenon is called “coiling,” and you’ve experienced it while dripping honey, except no one gave you millions of dollars afterward. It’s when thick fluid falls onto itself in the form of coils, similarly to rope, and creates patterns that can be described by a mathematical equation.
Anyway, in order to control the coiling, Pollock used a rod to drip the paint onto the canvas instead of pouring it straight from the can or using a brush. By mixing paints of various densities and moving his arm at different speeds, he was able to control the patterns that would show up in the final painting. Dude was doing high math and making it look like a stoner playing with finger paint.
6 ‘Lazy’ Pieces Of Art That Took An Insane Amount Of Work
Warning to writers
While you are worrying about whether beta readers will steal your ideas, there is a more genuine threat on the horizon.
When offered a publishing contract, please do all your research before you sign. There are a number of fakes and scammers out there, as well as good-intentioned amateurs that don’t know how to get your work to a wide audience. I won’t tell the heartbreaking stories here - there are too many.
Being published badly is worse than being never published.
It can destroy your career and your dreams.
The quick check is to google the publishing house name + scam or warning.
But, to be sure, check with these places first. They aren’t infallible (nothing is) but they can help you protect yourself. They are written and maintained by expereinced writers, editors, publishers and legal folks.
Absolute Write: Bewares and Background Checks
Preditors and editors
Writer Beware
and the WRITER BEWARE blog
Keep yourself and your work safe.
This is really important, so if you are a writer or have writer friends, or you are a writing blog, please reblog it.
Just to let you know, PublishAmerica changed their name to America Star Books.
HEAD’S UP, WRITER TYPES: THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PSA!
Also applies to many so-called freelance sites that are just content mills, and may not pay unless your work is used, even if the contract seems designed otherwise.
Listen, reading these is like legit reading horror stories. When it comes to publishing your writing, always, always, ALWAYS do your research. Not only will it help you avoid scams, but it will also be likely to help you land a much better fit for an agent/publisher/whatever. Knowing more is never going to hurt.
Marlene Dietrich in Morocco (1930)
I looked so good yesterday. Today I look like a crusty blob.
Pseudo-intellectual Pricks
He’s most likely educated, possibly a master’s degree in rhetoric. He could be a new atheist, possibly libertarian, most likely white. If you can’t smell his smugness, you can recognize him by the following tropes below.
Next time they use one of these on you, don’t waste your time. Copy and paste. Let them know they’re stereotyped.
The Pacifist
The guy who’s always making that bigoted comment on your thread, and always ends with, “Let’s agree to disagree.” He may follow up with a disingenuous attempt at finding common ground.
Example: I’m just saying, that if poor people worked harder, they wouldn’t have to depend on the government. You obviously don’t think so. No need to get upset. Let’s just agree to disagree. We can certainly find common ground with the fact that there are definitely some poor people that work very hard.
The Freedom Fighter
More indignant than the smug pacifist, he feels you’re taking away his right to have an opinion.
Example: I’m allowed to have an opinion about homosexuality. I’m allowed to express my beliefs. I’m allowed to disagree without being attacked.
The Anecdotally Privileged
He’s white (and male) and he’s right. No matter what your experience is, his experience trumps it.
Example: Well, I lived in New York City for three years and the NYPD has always treated me with respect.
The Wounded
He responds with the old shock and awe routine about being misunderstood.
Example: You know who I am. I’m not a bad person. How can you call me a sexist?
The Oppression Authority
He married into oppression (or is friends with the oppressed or spent time working among the oppressed), so now his opinion should have gravitas.
Example: My wife’s family is Mexican, and they also think illegal immigrants should be deported.
The Call for Civility
He indirectly insults your racial, gender, sexual identity, spiritual beliefs, or simply your intelligence. When you call him out on his bigotry, he is (huff huff) insulted. Then he plays the “call for civility.”
Example: I haven’t called you any names, but you called me a bigot. If you want to persuade people, you need to treat people with civility.
The Logical Fallacist
His go-to is the ad hominem. When you point out that he may not understand a racial problem because he’s white, he screams, “ad hominem!” and runs around with his underwear on his head. Another favorite is the straw man, where he claims you’ve ignored his real argument and are attacking an incorrect version of his argument.
Example: You’ve misunderstood my main point. I was talking about the prison industrial complex, not racism. Straw man!
The Claim of Ignorance/Innocence
He claims that he’s confused about your opinion on a personal matter and wants to discuss it. Don’t be fooled. He knows exactly what he wants to say and is trying to lead you down a path where he can claim you’ve made a logical fallacy. Then he will claim innocence again—that he was simply trying to have a discussion. He will call for civility. You can’t win.
Example: I’m confused. It’s just not natural to be with someone of the same sex.
The Rational Male
He is calm, collected, and detached. He understands reason and logic. If you make it personal or emotional, that’s it. Conversation over.
Example: Simply put, I fail to see the logic of religion. All religions are the opiate of the masses. But there is one religion that kills people if you disagree with them. And that’s Islam. You don’t see Buddhist bombers, do you? Well, if you’re going to become emotional, then we can’t have this conversation.
The Neutral Judge
He can view the situation from a neutral point of view, implying you cannot. Sure, he understands your POV. Because he’s neutral and wiser than you, he also understands the other side. Because of this ability to discern such (literally) black and white issues with no partiality, he is a better judge than you are.
Example: I followed the entire George Zimmerman case and listened to all the evidence presented. Though I find it all tragic, I have to agree with the jurors. You might have anecdotal evidence about racism in the law, but the law is the law.
I swear 99% of white men fall into all of these categories
and i love watching the Rational Logical atheist white men go into shrieking tailspins if you suggest that mayyybe they’re not quite as objective as they insist they are - “I DON’T have white privilege Oprah’s richer than me I DON”T I DON”T I DON”T STOP BEING HYSTERICALLLLL!!!!”
I accidentally began a relationship with Mr Oppression Authority (¼ Filipino! grew up poor on an army base! he knew about discrimination!) that turned into horrific abuse/my being a frog slowly boiled alive for three years, and I still think this is the funniest as well as most accurate post of 2016. I mean, “…and runs around with his underwear on his head”? My skin just cleared up.
Saving this and printing it out.
Literally so many people in my life like this
"Is ableism an actual thing?"
Yes.
Many of you don’t seem to believe that it exists so here are a few statistics and please keep in mind this is a very short list and doesn’t get into anything even as “trivial” as representation in the media or as specific as how high these numbers go when you include intersections of race and sexuality and anything besides binary gender
Being disabled in public was illegal in the United States until the mid-1970s (x)
Segregation of the disabled still exists; from designated parking spaces to refusal of hiring disabled people in visible jobs to denial of basic education (x)
Disabled people are still legally allowed to be paid slave wages, as little as $0.22 an hour (x)
To receive disability benefits, which can be around $700 a month, a United States resident can be required to not have any savings, to own any property, to never inherit money or property, to never have more than $2,000 in their checking account, to never work for anything above the aforementioned slave wages, as well as many other restrictions (x)
Disabled people, even simply the seeing or hearing impaired, often have their children taken away from them by social services for no reason (x)
Disabled women are twice as likely to victims of domestic violence as abled women (x)
Disabled women are less likely to seek help for their abuse, and oftentimes the little help the receive is not appropriate (x)
Disabled women are more likely to experience abuse over a longer period of time and suffer more severe injuries as a result (x)
Reports of sexual violence against disabled women range between 51% and 79% (x)
Forced sterilization was legal in the United States until 2014 and was most often performed on the disabled and/or women of color (x)
85% of disabled women have experienced domestic violence (x)
80% of women with intellectual disabilities have been sexually assaulted, and 50% of those women had been assaulted more than 10 times. (x)
Half of the people murdered by police officers are disabled (x)
Family members of disabled individuals are not only legally allowed to “put down” their disabled family member but they are often praised in the community and media as heroes for it (x)
This is super heartbreaking, spreading awareness is so important.
Normalize using ‘they’ and ‘them’ pronouns. Practice doing it, especially when you’re unsure of someone’s gender. It avoids cissexism and adhering to an arbitrary binary. Seriously!!! If someone says they are more comfortable with these pronouns for themself, use them!!!! Don’t be an ass!!! This isn’t an opportunity to flex your grammatical muscle, that you only really seem to care about when it comes to not using the correct pronouns for transgender people
The self-expression promoted in Pride parades has been increasingly facilitated by corporate sponsors. Anyone who has attended a major Pride event in recent years has felt the heavy presence of big businesses: Wells Fargo, TD Bank, Walmart, and Diet Coke, to name a few. According to Project Queer, more than half of the 253 participants in the 2015 Chicago Pride Parade were corporations, businesses, and banks. In comparison, LGBTQ groups represented less than 10% of the participants. Not only is it irresponsible to corporatize Pride, many of the sponsorships promote products or lifestyles that are inaccessible or insensitive to the LGBTQ community across the United States. In New York, the Pride Parade runs down 5th Avenue in Manhattan, passing mainly high-profile shops and neighborhoods fitting of high-figure salaries. The Guardian notes that many of San Francisco Pride’s biggest sponsors, like Facebook and Google, contribute to the growing income inequality in Silicon Valley, while members of the LGBTQ community struggle with homelessness in skyrocketing numbers. And The Chicagoist points out that alcohol companies frequently sponsor Pride events—yet over 30% of the LGBTQ community is projected to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, a rate three times higher than the general population. Others feel unsafe by support from big businesses. Members of the LGBTQ community have rallied against Wells Fargo’s sponsorship in particular, criticizing the bank’s history of investing in private prisons that incarcerate LGBTQ persons, especially queer and trans people of color, at disproportionate rates.

Fucking had to cancel on seeing Mandy today and I am so bummed. I’ve spent weeks thinking of what I wanted to say. I want to tell her about the tumor. I want to explain to her the real reason I left her & let her know I still love her. I love her so much, I do, she is the sweetest soul and has made a world of difference in my life. I miss her lips, her hands, her voice. She was understanding of course bc I’m so sick but I’m sure it’ll be a while before we can find a day that matches up again. I get so angry with my body on days like this. It was so important to me. Such is life. Such is this chronically ill life.
I know / the way you fuck me now is how, later, / you’ll hate me.
