The motive is "Kill someone and get away with it and you can take one person of your choice."
There is a trio of close friends. The killer decides to set a trap in a place where the other two frequent. Whichever one survives is the one they will take with them. They know the survivor will hate them forever but at least they could save one of them.
A student has a talent related to making music.
After the first trial, they make a song for the victim and one for the culprit as a tribute and to raise the student body's morale. After it works, they continue to do this after every chapter.
The songs are added to the player's Student Handbook and can be listened to by the player when they want.
Two different ideas for this:
First: The student dies late-game. However they inspired another student to get into music and after you complete the game, new songs are available, with the in-game explanation that the inspiried student took up the mantle and made a song for all of the students.
Second: This one requires the student surviving. Instead, they are doing this with another student with a musical talent and the two form a friendship. The second student is the token "Culprit with an unsympathetic motive" so the first student refuses to make a song for them. Their arc concerns them working out their feelings on their former friend and they release a song after escaping.
Takes place in the V3 verse.
Team Danganronpa start kidnapping people to use for their own entertainment and usually either keep the survivors for future games or just kill them once they run out of use.
The Mastermind is revealed in Chapter 5 and regains memory of their past life. They then team up with the other survivors to take down Team Danganronpa.
The killing games are run by a group where multiple members run their own killing game, each consisting of 9 students.
For one group, after the first trial, and two students have died, leaving 7, they accidentally gain access to the other area and find 7 more students who have just gone though thier own class trial and lost 2 of their own.
The killing games are revealed to have been run simultaneously, and now that the two student bodies are aware of each other, the people overseeing these groups decide to combine, meaning the student body now consists of the usual number of 14 students that are left over at the start of Chapter 2.
This means that the main cast is aware that their are other killing games taking place. Maybe they find a way to stop all killing games, or they don't, leaving way for a sequel.
It could also lead to some emotional moments as both groups learn about the dead students from the other group through their mourning.
A class of Ultimates who already know each other, have interacted with each other and formed solid relationships are kidnapped into a killing game without having their memories erased.
This means that their bonds are stronger and they know each other better, meaning betrayal and death hurts more and the killers know more about their victims and can plan accordingly.
Killer is voted guilty and is so afraid of execution they just straight up kill themselves in front of the entire class.
The second culprit is not found at the end of the double murder case so the entire group has to deal with the paranoia that it could be any one of them.
The game has two protagonists.
One who deals with the Daily Life, and the other who takes over during Deadly Life.
(While they could share POV's during the Prologue, there could also be a third decoy protagonist we follow who, at the end of the Prologue, tries to rebel against the mascot only to be killed, leading to the POV switch.)
Characters who knew each other before the game and don't have the best relationship, such as estranged siblings or longtime rivals, becoming closer as the game progresses.
A game that takes place in the canon Hope's Peak Saga timeline decades later.
Despite Headmaster Makoto Naegi's best efforts, the ultimate titles Fashionista, Analyst and Soldier have all become taboo. He eventually stops giving out these titles but he has to be replaced eventually...
One of the characters in the cast is one of these titles either pretending to be the amnesiac Ultimate??? or that they have another talent (Ultimate Analyst pretending to be the Ultimate Detective or Theorist)
Alternatively, they could actually not remember their talent and is shocked and horrified to discover the truth.
Character 1 likes Character 2. Maybe the feeling is mutual, maybe it is one-sided.
Character 2 poisons a meal and tells Character 1 to give it to Character 3 who eats it and dies. During the trial, the students are unsure who to vote guilty and the mascot says that either one is fine.
Wanting to save Character 2, Character 1 acts unlikable and says that they intentionally killed the victim, causing the others to vote them.
After the trial, the mascot reveals that no, this was in fact Character 2's fault and now the others have doomed Character 1 to death.
Obviously the class is guilty and hate Character 2 now. Maybe this causes a redemption for Character 2, or maybe they have no remorse.
Two characters are very close.
One morning the protagonist comes into the dining hall to see the two of them already sitting at the dining table looking depressed. When the protag asks what's wrong, Character 1 just coldly says to wait until everyone is here.
When everyone shows up, Character 1 announces that last night they came into the kitchen to see Character 2 planning a murder, and asked if this is true, Character 2 just silently nods. This causes the group to ostracize and keep Character 2 watched at all times, while Character 1 becomes cold and avoids them.
(From a meta perspective, the player/viewer will likely wonder if Character 1 actually attempted murder, and Character 2 is covering for them. This evetually gets proven false, likely during the trial, when Character 2 comes under suspicion and they have to go over what they were planning.)
Either the characters fix their relationship, or one dies before they can.
There are two characters who deeply care about each other.
One character ends up the victim and throughout the investigation it becomes "obvious" to the other students that it was a suicide, but the other character it adamant that it wasn't and is demanding that they find and execute the killer.
Come the trial, the other students initially think about just voting the dead student but the their friend is clearly not in a good mental state so they decide to go over the case to help them "come to terms".
Eventually, they find out that the friend inadvertently killed them and was completely unaware of it until that moment. (Maybe the victim tried to set up a trap around the building to capture the mastermind, only for the unaware friend to trigger the trap while in another room)
Motive Idea:
A student is given access to the entire killing game area, including areas that have not been unlocked yet, as a boon. Meanwhile, the other students are walled off from all areas except from what they initially were allowed in the first Chapter.
A few ways this could go:
A student is given this randomly, chosen by the killing game host. The identity of this student can be either known to the students, or the headmaster gives the student access in private and the students have no idea who it is. The first option causes the students to highly suspect the chosen student, while the second option causes suspicion among the entire group.
Alternatively, the host calls the entire student body to announce the motive and any student can take the boon. We get the whole spiel of "We will not play your game. We know what you're doing. We all reject." only for one student to take the boon. When the other students try to confront them, they run off to the other areas to escape questioning. Eventually, the other students find they are suddenly allowed in the other areas as someone has died: either the student is a main suspect, or it student themself is the victim, and the others have to find out how they were killed despite being separated from the rest of the student body.
The student could be working against the student body, but they could also easily be using their boon to find out more about the killing game and working to end it. Maybe the rest of the class is aware of this, if mildly suspicious but deciding to put their trust in them. Or, maybe they don't trust the student at all and only find out after the BDA.
A trial mechanic where two characters are at a stand off and you have to butt in to support their arguments where you see fit, as well as eventually decide which one you side with.
Think a fusion of Rebuttal Showdown and Scrum Debate.
Instead of the protagonist and the support being the main romance, the main romance is between either the protagonist and the rival, or the support and the rival.
A scared character spends the early chapters avoiding the rest of the cast out of fear and suspicion. The protagonist convinces them to try and befriend the others, and the character reaches out, eventually ending up growing attached to the prideful, aggressive asshole who was also distant from the rest of the cast.
The scared character ends up dead and while at first the asshole acts like he is upset and angry at their only friend dying, it is revealed that they killed them because they felt the victim 'pitied them'.
The protagonist has to deal with the feeling that they are responsible for the victim's death.
