It’s fascinating to be in a commercial-free zone — no chain stores, no ads, few signs — without the visual clutter of so much of our lives. Then there are the people, universally friendly, who we met along the way and who became part of our stories — the human dramas within the larger political, economic and cultural drama that is unfolding. For a reporter, a rich country, indeed. Not in wealth, but in everything else.

The minuses? There’s the heat, high 90s every day we were there. There’s the lack of internet connections. […]  There is also the continuing presence of the state in the daily lives of people. We met the artist Tania Bruguera, who’d been detained, her passport taken, for trying to stage a performance piece in which average citizens could speak their minds.

Breaking News: The Rush to Cover a Shooting in Charleston

Ashley Southall has a less-than-enviable shift at The New York Times: She’s a night rewrite reporter whose workday can run from midafternoon until early the next morning. She’s never really sure what her assignment will be. One night, it’s her job to write an unexpected obituary, the next to report on flood victims in Texas. Some nights, she trolls the web looking for stories to write.

On Wednesday, she was asked to pull together one of the biggest news stories of the year, the fatal shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.

The story broke after 10 p.m., and with just the haziest of details. Ms. Southall — more than 700 miles away from Charleston — began chasing facts by phone and online (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, streaming video). Directing the coverage was Renee Murawski, the National Desk’s night editor, who was also trying to run down stringers in Charleston and find correspondents who could get to the city as soon as possible.

At this point, there were no reports that anyone had died, and facts were hard to come by. Ms. Southall was able to confirm the shooting and provide background and details about the church and its pastor for a rudimentary story for the Times’s mobile app and its home page.

Then we got lucky.

When white people go on shooting sprees, their actions are frequently attributed to mental illness and, thus, they’re not considered fully accountable for the harm they’ve inflicted. This narrative – which is not afforded to people of color – feeds into the assumption that incidents like what happened at Emanuel AME Church are isolated tragedies executed by lone gunmen. Essentially, it excuses the system that allows racialized terrorism to keep happening.
