A pre-Boruto Anko side-blog written by that one Mother nerd. I’m not familiar enough with the sequel series.

I fully intend for this blog to be a place for Naruto fans of all ages. The content featured here will not exceed what you would see in a typical episode or chapter, so nothing overtly sexual will be posted here. Anko can be bloodthirsty and is associated with snakes. She’s also a victim of human experimentation. These are her defining character traits, so I won’t be tagging them.

This blog is canon compliant and will try to portray Anko as close to her canon self as possible. There will be headcanons, but they will be built on what we already know of her character.

As of now, I won’t be taking asks regarding sexuality or shipping.

I will accept asks from other character blogs, but I can’t promise full-blown threads will come of them. I’m a little pressed for time, and my attention span isn’t the same these days.

Other than that, go to town on her. Crack asks are totally fine. Bear in mind that she may not be open to discuss her past with Orochimaru right away, but keep on knocking anyway.

Will occasionally switch to her younger years, so be on the look out for that! Kid Anko is pre-Orochimaru defection, so she has an absolutely positive attitude about her sensei.

“You know, I’ve never given it much thought before. An obvious selling-point would be whichever one makes my job easier. The genetic talents of the Hyuuga or the Uchiha come to mind, but the heavy baggage associated with these families is hardly worth the gifts. On the other hand, the same could be said of any kekkei genkai, when you really think about it. You might as well be listed in the Bingo Book at this point, because you are now a target of the curious and the envious. If you’re killed in action, your head is toted around like a trophy. If you’re captured, you’re no different than a guinea pig. You can take my word for it on that last one. . .”

“Lady Tsunade is ,by far, the safest choice here. She might throw me through a window, but I’ve been through worse, and unlike a certain somebody I know and whose slithery name won’t be mentioned here, I’m not interested in creating international incidents.”

1. It was mostly a family-affair. Both of my parents came from long-lines of shinobi pedigrees; although, neither one of them practiced the arts themselves. Apparently, my paternal grandfather’s last name wasn’t even Mitarashi but was a pseudonym he picked up after spending years guarding a certain shrine. He wanted to start a new life, free of the notoriety that comes with being an assassin-for-hire, and thus began working in the tea business.

Obviously, I thought this was all very impressive and begged my parents to let me carry-on this lineage, but they both refused. After they died, though, the Village saw my potential and took me in. It was bittersweet, to say the least.

2. When Orochimaru defected, he took me with him. At the time, I had no idea that he’d gone rogue. He’d asked me to meet him in the Land of the Sea to continue my tutelage and told me he’d catch up with me after he finished tying-up a few loose ends. Later, after I was found by ANBU with a hole in my memory bank, I was treated like damaged goods. If I couldn’t give them the slightest clue of Orochimaru’s whereabouts then I was better off dead. No one said this to me directly of course. Lord Third had seen to it that I was treated decently enough, but I could tell that I wasn’t a welcome sight to many of the villagers. I was snubbed by former classmates, despised by former Academy Teachers. I didn’t know what he was planning and why he’d left, but that didn’t seem to matter. It got better, over time. I had to prove my worth, that I could be trusted. I wasn’t going to live the rest of my life in his shadow, with his stench in my clothes.

And ,well, here I am.

3. Ideally? My comrades. I’ve been known to do both actually, if given the rare opportunity. Going after Orochimaru in the Forest of Death wasn’t the best decision I ever made, but it could have been worse. A lot worse. I’m alive after all. Who knows what would have become of any of the others if they’d gone in my place.

“I’ll do you one better; I have a story that features all of the above, sans Hayate, and it all starts with Gai. Surprised yet?”

“After his surgery, word got around pretty quickly that he’d never walk again. It was a damning sentence. You know Gai; he lives and breathes physical conditioning, so you can imagine how crestfallen we all were to hear that he’d never leave his wheelchair. We all assumed he’d be inconsolable too, so we figured we’d do everything we could to help him adjust to this new way-of-life. After all, he’d always kept the lot of us going through the bad times, so it was time to return the favor.”

“As soon as we’d heard, Ibiki, Genma, and I put our money together to buy him some flowers. Kakashi must’ve gotten the same idea about cheering him up, because we met him at the lobby of the hospital. Imagine our surprise when we walk into Gai’s room and find him bound to his wheelchair, neck, wrists, legs, you name it. The wheelchair is locked in place, and he’s parked right next to the window, fear set in his eyes. We’re all confused. Suddenly Shizune just slides into the room with that pig of hers in her arms, congenial as can be.”

“Turns out that Gai, being Gai, had kept trying to hold wheelchair races at the front of the hospital when he really should have been resting his body. Shizune said it was the only way to ensure that he’d stay in his room, but the jury’s still out on that one. I will say this: Ibiki was so impressed with her handiwork, he thought about asking her to teach new recruits how to tie those knots.”

“Mm. Where to start?. . . Between rebuilding the Village, adjusting to new relations between Villages that used to be our enemies, and learning how to take Kakashi seriously as Hokage, I could go on-and-on about how hectic life has been and how I wake up every morning feeling like I’m living in a dream. Things aren’t exactly perfect right now, and I doubt they ever will be perfect, but. . .as exhausted as I am by the end of the day, I feel hopeful too. I haven’t felt that way since I was a kid. Honestly, the mystery of what tomorrow may hold keeps me going.”

“Case in point, Kurenai had her baby girl a few weeks back. She named her Mirai. Isn’t that beautiful? It means future. I had the privilege of keeping her for a few hours while Kurenai ran errands, and while I was holding her, all I could think about was how she might be able to grow up in a world so vastly different from the one I was raised in. She might be able to have a childhood. It’s encouraging.”

It wasn’t a great secret that Kurenai was on a crusade to end Asuma’s smoking habit. Anko was sympathetic to both sides of the argument. On one hand, they all smoked on occasion. Stresses of the job required an outlet. Alcohol wasn’t as accessible as a hit off someone else’s cigarette. As well, Asuma had more on his plate than the average ninja.

On the other, Kurenai loved Asuma, and smoking had its detriments.

“Do you think I’m being too hard on him,” Kurenai asked through a newly-developed smoker’s cough.

“Now that you mention it. . .”

The gentle embrace of sleep always came with loopholes. When Orochimaru fled, he left night-terrors in place of his company. He was there in her sleep; his voice clung to her in the tedious hours of insomnia’s hold. It eased as she aged, but even in adulthood, she had nights where she wrestled with hypotheticals.

Would she had gone with him had he asked? The question boiled the acid in her stomach until she wanted to vomit, because she always answered “yes”. She would’ve followed him to other worlds had he only smiled at her.

Morning came. Anko was checking their provisions when Kakashi stirred behind her. Outside of the compulsory greetings, neither spoke, the heaviness of an all but restful night weighing at their limbs. They would adjust as they’ve had times before. Par for the course in their line-of-work.

Rations were ate in the quiet of the forest. Anko worked the tension from her shoulders once she realized that Kakashi wouldn’t be mentioning last-night. He understood; he’d said as much with his hand on her arm. They’d switched shifts then, and she waited for his nightmares to start.

When Sai and Yamato met Anko at the Village Gates, the former had wondered if there’d been a mix-up in the Hokage’s office and this glutton was placed as leader by accident.

He watched the way she devoured the disgusting glob of sugared rice with the spirit of a ravenous animal and felt his insides clench. He never grimaced; it wasn’t polite to do so, according to his books, but he was puzzled that someone could get away with such a grotesque display out in the open like this. Had she not been taught proper manners!?

Freshly-minted as chuunin, Uchiha Obito was on cloud-nine. Rumors of war clotted Konoha’s atmosphere. He knew he’d be among the first to go when called, and he’d do so with pride; however, now was the time for celebration! He’d catch-up to Kakashi yet and capture Rin’s admiration to boot!

Next to him sat a diminutive girl, an aspiring kunoichi. Her developing biceps were a giveaway. When Obito’s serving of dango came along, the girl’s eyes gleamed hungrily. Feeling generous, he offered his plate. . . and felt his mouth drop as she swiped it clean of every skewer.
