Some mindless p*rn for your Friday night or Saturday afternoon, depending on your time zone
types of writing sessions
got on computer, looked at document, was like “fuck this shit” and got off
wrote like 150 words that consist of bloating the existing useless conversation or scene even more
wrote SO MANY WORDS but it was because you were so desperate to escape the Bad Part
wrote SO MANY WORDS but it was because you were so desperate to get closer to the Good Part
got on your document, ran into research issue, spent like an hour on Wikipedia, ah shit
the somewhat satisfying “fixing everything I hated about the scene I wrote the day before” session
decent amount of progress that took like 3x longer than it should have because you were repeatedly distracted
In The Zone and completely absorbed, just BLAZING through a few thousand words, probably close to the ending, probably listening to playlist
Not actually a writing session, just listening to playlist
the session where you write like a paragraph, suddenly realize the unfixability of your current plot predicament, and cry
that weird session where you don’t have much time and you’re super tired and you write like a page but you reread it the next morning and holy shit these words came from the fingers of god why is it so good
that session that is purely just navigating the boring shit of getting from one scene to the next and it sucks but you leave off on the cusp of something interesting and it feels good
the satisfyingly exhausting session where you write the Good Part and you’re confident it came out pretty well and you’re full of thoughts and stuff about where things are going next but you need to let them rest
get on computer, write exactly one sentence, get off computer. Now you can say you wrote today
For me there’s also:
open document, spend an hour reading what you already wrote, exchange exactly one word for a synonym, close document
And even better:
open document, add one comma, close document
All in a day’s work.
“WRITE IT BADLY. Write it badly, write it badly, write it badly, write it badly. Stop what you’re doing, open a Word document, put a pencil on some paper, just get the idea out of your head. Let it be good later. Write it down now. Otherwise it will die in there.”
— Brandon Sanderson on overcoming writer’s block to create a first draft as a professional author (via almost-always-eventually-right)
Very good advice for both the writer and the critiquer.
ATTENTION FANFICTION WRITERS ⚠️:
All your readers have different skin! That means colour and texture. Some of us have darker skin, some lighter. Some of us have spotty skin, some smooth. Please keep this in mind when writing or it becomes more oc than reader-insert. This means that not everyone tans in the sun, some people burn, some don’t react at all so please don’t make the reader have a tan when they’ve been in the sun because not everyone works that way. Another problem is that some people already describe themselves as pale, so saying ‘your (s/c) skin turned pale’ becomes laughable.
For NSFW content, please keep in mind that describing lips, nipples and vaginas as pink automatically makes it a white oc. In fact, some white people have brown nipples etc, so keep in mind that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. We as a community must include, not exclude all the differences each person has as it’s these differences that make us unique and beautiful.
Random, but a really handy way to make things seem creepy or wrong in horror is to make them incongruously neat or clean:
In the middle of a horrific battlefield, you find one corpse laid aside neatly, straightened and arranged, its arms crossed neatly across its chest
As you walk through the garden, you gradually realise that the oddness you’ve been noticing about the trees is that they are all perfectly symmetrical
As you move through the abandoned house, you realise that suddenly that there’s no dust in this room, no dirt or cobwebs
You hear hideous noises coming from behind a locked door, screams and pleas, and visceral sounds of violence. When you manage to break down the door, there is no one there, and the room is perfectly spotless
In the middle of a horrific battlefield, a hollow full of churned mud and blood, you find five corpses cleanly dismembered, each set of limbs or parts neatly laid out in their own little row
You witness a murder, a brutal, grisly killing that carpets the area in blood. When you return in a blind panic with the authorities, the scene is completely clean, and no amount of examination can find even a drop of blood
You run through the night and the woods with a comrade, pulling each other through leaves and twigs and mud as you scramble desperately towards freedom. When you finally emerge from the forest, in the grey light of dawn, you turn to your companion in relief, and notice that their clothes are somehow perfectly clean
You hand a glass of water to your suspect, talking casually the whole while, and watch with satisfaction as they take it in their bare hand and take a drink. There’ll be a decent set of prints to run from that later. Except there isn’t. There are no prints at all. As if nothing ever touched the glass
You browse idly through your host’s catalogue, and stop, and pay much more attention, when you realise that several items on a dry list of acquisitions are ones you’ve seen before, and it slowly dawns on you that each neat little object and number in this neat little book are things that belong (belonged?) to people you know
Neatness, particularly incongruous neatness, neatness where you expect violence or imperfection or abandonment, or neatness that you belatedly realise was hiding violence, or neatness that is imposed over violence, is incredibly scary. Because neatness is not a natural thing. Neatness requires some active force to have come through and made it so. Neatness implies that the world around you is being arranged, maybe to hide things, to disguise things, to make you doubt your senses, or else simply according to something else’s desires. Neatness is active and artificial. Neatness puts things, maybe even people, into neat little boxes according to something else’s ideals, and that’s terrifying as well. Being objectified. Being asked to fit categories that you’re not sure you can fit, and wondering what will happen to the bits of you that don’t.
Neatness, essentially, says that something else is here. Neatness where there should be chaos says that either something came and changed things, or that what you’re seeing now or what you saw then is not real. Neatness alongside violence says that something came through here for whom violence did not mean the same thing as it does to you.
Neatness, in the right context, in the right place, can be very, very scary
And fun

More writing by yours truly! Check it out if you feel inclined!
I think another problem with the mindset of kudos/comments on AO3 is part of the “stalking” culture on instagram. If you like a picture that is months old on instagram, its “insta-stalking” because you had to scroll through that person’s profile in order to find those months-old pictures. That is NOT how AO3 works. It’s not cringe or embarrassing to find a fic that was posted in 2012 and like it. It is there to read.
Same for works on AO3. Sure, maybe some of us have some old works that aren’t up to our current standards of writing. But I, personally, am never going to look at a kudos email and think “ew omg I can’t believe someone found this fic from 2016 why are they liking it”. In fact, I am entirely going to go “nice! people are still reading some of my older works too, I’m glad they enjoyed it”. It’s an archive, it is meant to be a collection of transformative works, old and new, and you are meant to find them.
In fact, if you find a work that is from five years ago and you really liked it? I bet the author would love a comment even then.
Stories are written to be read.
Show some appreciation.
Writers write to be read!
Older stories need love just as new ones. Please don’t let stories and chapters die of neglect after one fucking week!
I got a comment a couple of months ago for a nearly-10-years-old crackfic and I was thrilled!
Part of why there’s sortable searches at AO3 is to let you find fics for a now-dormant fandom, fics that are no longer canon-compliant after the new episodes, fics that work with fanon tropes that are no longer popular, fics from authors who are no longer actively writing… and just fics that weren’t written recently.
Comments on old fics are great! Often, they bring back a rush of memories for the author - oh wow, I remember when I was obsessing about this fandom, how much I loved this pairing, the fics I read that inspired this fic!
You also never know when the author is still working on the project in question! I’m getting comments on things I posted a while ago now, which is really kind considering I am now editing those projects to post more. It’s possible the author is still thinking about it, too!

Summary:
Jongin can't take much more heartbreak in his relationships. Sehun doesn't seem like the loving type to begin with. An arranged marriage is convenient, if they can keep it casual.
(Or: They're like watercolor paints on paper, spreading until only a thin line separates them. Jongin can't help but smudge it.)

A little PSA for people who use AO3…
Gen refers to fic that is not focused on romance. If your fic is not a romance fic, please give it this tag.
Other refers to fic that is focused on romance, but is not specifically male/female, male/male, or female/female (like an OT3 (ship involving 3 people), a ship involving characters that are not male or female, etc). IT IS NOT FOR PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS. IT IS FOR ROMANTIC ONES. please for the love of all that is holy do not tag your family-relationship-centered fics as “other” you are going to give people a HEART ATTACK.
“Character/Character” is for romantic pairs. “Character & Character” is for platonic relationships like friendship, family, etc. Please do not tag family-centered or adult-and-minor-centered platonic character relationships as character/character for the love of all that is holy
The E rating is for smut and literally nothing else (unless you have other unusual reasons to rate it E–I’ve seen people apply it to non-smut fics as a deterrent to keep minors away from it, but keep in mind it’ll make it so people who are trying to avoid smut will not find your fic). Your fic that has a lot of graphic violence but no sexual content does not need an E rating.
The M rating is for fics that would basically be rated R if they were movies, and may contain graphic violence, some sexual content, and generally more serious subject matter than you would typically show a teenager. However, if your fic is almost entirely smut, please just give it an E rating.
Also, when you post a fic, you WILL want to give it a rating, or else AO3 will assume you’re probably posting smut and will warn everybody who clicks on your fic that it may contain adult content. If you don’t want that on your fic that contains no adult content at all, please just give it the proper rating instead of not rating it at all.
this post brought to you by PLEASE LEARN HOW THE TAGGING SYSTEM ON THIS WEBSITE WORKS YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE EVERYONE A HEART ATTACK
ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING I FORGOT TO MENTION!
“Creator Chose Not to Archive Warnings” means that at least one or more of the archive warnings (that is, “Major Character Death,” “Graphic Depictions of Violence,” “Rape/Non-Con,” or “Underage”) DOES apply to your story, and you’re choosing not to say which one it is. If you select this option, AO3 will put a warning on the fic that potential readers have to click through.
“No Archive Warnings Apply” means that none of the aforementioned archive warnings apply to your fic.
THESE ARE NOT THE SAME THING. IF YOUR FIC DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING MAJOR THAT NEEDS TO BE WARNED FOR, PLEASE SELECT “NO ARCHIVE WARNINGS APPLY.”
okay, so here’s a thing i do that i never see talked about in writing circles: prewriting.
prewriting, for me, serves two functions: one, to stave off writer’s block and get me hyped up to write, and two, to make sure the tone of my writing stays consistent. i know we’ve all encountered that problem where we’re writing glorious purple prose, take a five minute break, and come back unable to write sentences more complex than those in a picture book. prewriting is, in essence, any refresher of your wip that you look at before you start writing. my prewriting agenda takes about 15 minutes, and it goes like this:
For ~10 min i read a published book that has the prose i want to emulate (in this case, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo) For ~5 min I look at the WIP: moodboards or graphics i’ve made, my outlines, and most importantly, the chapter (or several chapters) that precede what i’m about to write. this is the most important step for me, as it reminds me of what’s going on and the flow of the story. cons of prewriting: it’s very, very easy to get distracted by all the cool inspiration you have and not actually write. to prevent this, i set a timer. a loud one. even though this might seem like obvious advice, consciously establishing a writing routine, including a proper setup, boosted my word count like mad, and i hope it benefits some of you as well. peace.
I need to do this ASAP
Also, if you’re like me and find it unhelpful to read fiction by other people just before you write fiction (I stress so hard about absorbing other writers’ voices that it actually hinders my ability to write), try watching a bit of a TV show or film, or listening to music, that captures the general vibe/aesthetic/mood of your WIP.
