she sighs into the hug, pressing her face into the crook of her sister’s neck. they’d been through so much together. dani’s younger days spent tiptoeing warily around her, worried that her facade would finally be shattered, only to realize she’d found someone she could truly be herself with.

she bit at her lip nervously under the scrutiny of lia’s extraordinarily perceptive eyes. “just worried, y’know? i’m barely around anymore because i’m always in the damn hospital, and when i’m off work i’m such a drag i don’t see how anyone would want to spend time with me.” she shrugs, coughing up a hollow laugh.

He was slumped over a textbook, cross legged on the floor in the on-call room. He was also scarfing down the cold Chinese food as the third part of his late dinner. The break was nice, he was tired and stressed and had to be back out in twenty. But the break was nice. Seeing Dani, long-time medical school friend/fellow survivor, was nice too. “Did you hear about the Endarterectomy tomorrow? I’m trying to get in on the lung transplant on Wednesday but, beggars can’t be choosers, you know?”

she cannot muster anything but a weak smile as she leans over to grab a dumpling from his box. they’d been in the hospital for what felt like their whole lives already, breathing in the sterile smell of the wards and ( very rarely ) the operating theaters. “god. what i’d give to get in on that surgery.” it was tough. med school was a small pond of big fish already, and now that they’d moved on to their residencies, the fish had become sharks, biting at people they once considered friends just to get ahead. the one thing dani was thankful for was the constance of fletcher’s friendship, even as the battlefield grew harsher around them. “fingers crossed for ya ! the cardio attending doesn’t seem to like me that much...”

her first pride. she had been to so many mutant rallies and parades before but she had never really been to pride before. perhaps in a very distant memory she had gone but this was her first pride SINCE coming out. it was IMPORTANT. she was more comfortable with herself now and she had confidence in her sexuality. “ you having fun ? ! ” turns to the person beside her as she’s watching the parade in front of them. naomi dane-summers is ALL SMILES today, which is something that naomi isn’t even used to being.

dani loved pride. with a passion. it was a huge party in support of so many people in her life, and the one place she’d initially felt acceptance as she began the journey of discovering her own sexuality years ago. she made it a point to go every year, no matter what city she was in. still, life as a fresh resident at paragon’s only hospital made for plenty of sleep-deprived nights that even the strongest espressos couldn’t cure, and the girl’s exclamation jolted her out of her drowsy daze. “y—yeah ! you didn’t just wake me up or anything..” her voice trailed off weakly, a bashful smile creeping onto her face.

she’s bouncing on her toes as she looks at her father expectantly. dani had woken up at five in the morning, filled with excitement for her first father’s day back home in a while, bustling around the kitchen in an effort to make everything just right, all for her father. her biggest fan, her most ardent supporter. he deserved the best.

and that’s what she tried to give him. balancing the tray of food gingerly on the bed beside him, dani poked him in the arm to rouse him from his deep sleep. “surprise !!” the grin on her face is almost blindingly bright.
