Project Evaluation
By the end of the presentation I was so elated in what I had achieved in during the project. When we were distributed the project briefs I felt I wanted to challenge myself within the module, for this reason I chose to do costume and due to it being a costume for a woman. Through my research it allowed me to further my interest in period costumes and lifestyle.
Through my research I was able to create strong designs that would be suitable to the character. Obviously creating these designs that was true to the period I then had to remind myself that whatever I did for my final design I had to source so therefore I had to think more realistic into what I could find.
One of the issues I faced was dying the skirt. I took this as a learning curve to remember for the next time I face a challenge similar. Unfortunately due to the composition of the skirt it contained materials that would not take to the dye and therefore it did not become black. Through a long process of different methods from spraying to painting it eventually became a dark brown/light black cross and this I was able to work with due to the colours of my costume. As a designer and even as a maker these are problems that are often come across and therefore you have to think of the different routes you have to take to overcome this challenge. If I had something like again I would probably take the route of making the dress instead of dyeing it as my next option after painting it with fabric paint would have been to use scenic art paint but this would of make the dress stiff and rigid, something I had not intended the dress to be.
Even though there was no final set design or scenic art design done by the chosen deadline date I still had a vague idea of matching my costumes colours within the set and lighting. During the presentation this showed effective through the attention to detail within the costume in reference the hat as the peacock feathers created another angle and further layers to the character.
With the challenge of costuming a woman is the application of hair and make-up that goes alongside it. Luckily I was able to many trial runs learning how to achieve the look I wanted but saying this I was able to achieve this without being told how to do some of it much. I kept the expressionist touches within the make up with the big dark shadows around the eyes and in my design I wanted to added a green in within this to give a common theme running from the hat ribbon and the jacket she wears.
Overall I was happy with what I gained out of this project, which I thoroughly enjoyed and I feel that I am confident in designing a costume and one that’s on a budget as this would help me in the future in how to shop around to find a bargain as such but to also find a garment true to the design.
