How the Sirens Adopted a Ladybug Pt2
AO3 Beginning Next
“Absolutely not!” Selina walked back into the room to find Ladybug glaring at Plagg while the creature pouted at her. Harley looked like she was struggling not to laugh but Ivy seemed to be bracing for an explosion. “I’m not about to let you lose in the city Plagg. The last time you ‘helped’ me you collapsed the catacombs!”
“Oh come on Pigtails, you know that was an accident and Tikki fixed it. Besides I’m not going to use my powers. I just want to go with her so I can make sure she gets the right food since you won’t even tell them you’re allergic to shellfish which is in almost everything they ordered.” Ladybug’s face went bright red even though she still looked ready to murder the Kwami. Harley looked devastated.
“Oh kiddo, you should’ve said something. I’m so used to ordering for the three of us I didn’t even think to ask. I’ll call them back, just tell me what you want.” The hero’s expression turned sheepish.
“I’m sure I can find something to eat in what you ordered. I don’t want to be a bother.” Her mumbled words just brought a huff from Plagg.
“Pull up the menu on your phone and I’ll tell you what she’ll eat.”
“Plagg-”
“If you get sick and Tikki knows I could have prevented it I won’t hear the end of it for centuries. I’m getting you food you can eat without breaking out in hives.” As the Kwami and Harley retreated to a corner the girl still looked embarrassed, but she seemed far less agitated.
“You really should have told us. The last thing our reputations need is us being accused of intentionally killing a hero in Paris.” Selina meant it as a joke but considering the horrified expression on the girls face it missed the mark.
“I’m sorry. If it’s any consolation the allergy wouldn’t actually affect me transformed so even if they could link my civilian identity to you I doubt anyone would make a fuss over it.” She wasn’t sure what pissed her off more; the matter of fact way the girl said it or the fact that she felt that way in the first place.
“It’s not, and you don’t need to apologize. I can see where trusting us with that information could be considered dangerous.” Ladybug gave a non committal hum and continued to watch Plagg warily. When the Kwami flew back over it looked both smug and mischievous.
“Alright now let’s go get some cheese.” Ladybug was rubbing her temples with a pained look on her face. Finally she gave out a resigned sigh.
“Fine.” The Kwami perked up and the hero pinned him with a stern look. “You talk only if Catwoman is the only one that can hear you and under no circumstances will you use your powers. I mean it Plagg.” The creature was just nodding along.
“Of course. I’m not going to risk my cheese over a little bit of fun.” Given the girl’s face, she was less than reassured. “If you’re that worried about it just make it an order.”
“You know I don’t like doing that. Taking away your freewill is not the way I want to do things. I’d rather you respect me enough to do as I ask.” Plagg’s ears dropped for a moment before they looked thoughtful.
“Oh, you’re good. Guilt tripping me into good behavior. Tikki would be so proud.” Ladybug rolled her eyes.
“I was being sincere, but if it works I guess I’ll take it.” Her tone was dry. It was definitely an interesting dynamic between the two. “Not to mention Catwoman has to agree to take you along still.”
“I’d be happy to have the company, and you can call me Selina.” Plagg flew closer to study her before giving a thoughtful hum. They didn’t speak but Ladybug was watching the interaction with trepidation.
“Don’t feel pressured into buying the most expensive cheese in the store. Plagg likes to be dramatic about food. You’re doing us a favor and they’ll eat whatever you buy.” The last part was obviously a warning but the creature just rolled their eyes.
“Don’t worry, I’m used to dealing with strong personalities. We should head out so we can get back before the food gets here.” Ladybug hesitated but did nod and Plagg flew into her collar. “We’ll be back before you know it.” The girl gave her a tense smile but Selina figured it was the best she’d get so she headed out the door.
“She’s a good kid. If you’re planning anything I would suggest rethinking it. As she mentioned I’ve destroyed far larger things than a few people.” The threat just made her smile.
“I don’t doubt it. You can rest easy though. None of us mess with kids, and we all have a soft spot for street kids especially.” The creature let out something that sounded like a growl.
“She’s not a street kid, not really. If not for us and the responsibilities forced on her she’d be in a much better place.” Their frustration was obvious, and Selina had one more thing to think about. “Since we’re already going to the store do you mind picking up food for the others?”
“Other’s?” She wasn’t really paying attention, too busy wondering how being a hero put the girl on the streets. Not to mention getting angrier by the second that someone had allowed it to happen in the first place.
“The other Kwami. As Ladybug says we all have our favorites and the easiest way to get on everyone’s good side is food.” Selina let out a chuckle.
“Sure, may as well load up before she can protest.” She felt Plagg laughing against her collar bone.

Misconceptions, Miscommunication, and Misinformation Pt98

Damian sat back to back with Luka in a lesser traveled area of the park. He was drawing in his sketchbook while the other boy seemed to be strumming his guitar absentmindedly. It was strange being in such an unstructured school, not to mention having teachers who offered advice rather than criticism. He hadn’t liked it at first but it was growing on him. Not having to spend his time in a classroom with people who needed far less advanced curriculum made his life less monotonous. He was actually starting to enjoy himself until he spotted some of his former classmates standing off to the side, whispering and pointing at them.
“If you have something to say, say it. Otherwise go disturb someone else.” His words caused the group to jump and Luka stopped playing. They all just stood there looking sheepish and Damian took the moment to identify them. Luka’s sister was there, looking ridiculous trying to hide behind her much smaller girlfriend. The idiot blogger’s boyfriend was next to them looking anywhere but at him and Luka. Finally came the small girl with dreadlocks and her boyfriend. They all looked insanely uncomfortable.
“Hey guys, what’s up?” Luka’s calm demeanor seemed to release some of the tension. His sister even managed a small smile.
“Are you really a Wayne?” The blogger’s boyfriend seemed shocked the words came out of his mouth. Damian let out an annoyed scoff.
“Now you decided to confirm things? Where was this attitude when that liar was wrapping you all around her finger?” They all flinched and Luka elbowed him in the small of his back. He scowled at his boyfriend. These idiots were ruining the little time they got alone together and he seemed fine with it.
“What do you need Jules?” Luka zeroed in on his sister, ignoring the others. Apparently he was annoyed at the interruption. The girl mumbled something but it was her girlfriend that actually spoke.
“We saw an article about Marinette getting hurt. Is she alright?” He hadn’t even realized his father released a press statement yet, let alone that it made it to Paris, though he probably should have expected it once the decision was made. He shared a look with Luka before responding.
“If you want to know you should ask her. I’m not about to give out personal information to anyone, let alone any of you.” They flinched again and Damian fought not to roll his eyes. He couldn’t figure out what Marinette ever saw in these people.
“The number we have for her isn’t in service and we didn’t think we’d be welcome at the bakery.” That was possibly the first intelligent thing he’d heard out of them. Just imagining Sabine’s reaction to any of her daughter’s former classmates entering her business caused a feral grin.
“And what do you care if she is alright or not? Last time you saw her you were perfectly happy to see her injured, emotionally if not physically.” None of those present were actually at the assault but they all had aimed comments at Marinette that were meant to wound.
“We thought she was bullying Lila.” The girl with dreads decided to throw out that nonsense. Before he could answer such stupidity Luka broke in.
“Someone else’s bad behavior doesn’t excuse yours even if that had been true. I personally am at a loss to understand how any of you could ever believe Mari would bully anyone. It is a ridiculous thought.” Damian eyed his boyfriend warily. He’d never heard a tone anywhere near that cold come from him before. While he didn’t want that sound aimed at him, he was rather impressed.
“You didn’t see any of the stunts she pulled with Adrien.” Luka’s sister finally figured out how to be audible, he gave her a disappointed frown.
“Stunts that you all were encouraging her to do. Many of them you were a part of. I wonder how many wouldn’t have happened without all of your interference. Do you really think she would have gone after Lila for no reason with all of you against her?” They were all shuffling nervously and refusing to make eye contact again. “I think you all need to find out why you let yourselves be deceived so easily before you talk to Mari. That way any apologies may actually be sincere rather than just an effort to ease your own guilt.”
As they scampered away Damian could only smile fondly at the other boy. Luka didn’t put people in their place very often but it was always effective. He was staring after his sister and Damian could see the worry in his posture. He reached out to lace their fingers together.
“She’ll come around, it will just take time. None of them are ready to admit how wrong they were.” Luka leaned into him and while Damian couldn’t help scanning the area to make sure no one was watching, he didn’t feel the need to pull away. He never thought he’d be so comfortable showing affection in public, but Luka seemed to have a habit of making the impossible happen.
“I should have been more present. If I had paid more attention to Jules maybe I could have stopped her from being pulled in in the first place. At the very least I could have been there more for Mari. She’s always hidden her pain too well.”

Tris had been zig zagging around the city for close to an hour before she decided a confrontation was necessary. Whoever was tailing her was very skilled. She’d yet to catch sight of them. It would be a shame to have to kill someone who was obviously dedicated to their craft. On the next run through the buildings she found one with multiple levels and dodged around them until she was certain her stalker couldn’t see her. Then she waited.
She could hear them getting closer and listened as their steps became cautious. It had been awhile since she’d gone up against someone competent. She kept completely still and silent as they tried to track her. They took a wrong turn and that was all she needed. Within seconds she had them pinned to the ground.
“Who sent you?” The person she was holding went limp. It was a ploy to get your attacker to let down their guard. Instead she tightened her hold and made sure there was no method of escape. “I’m not going to ask again.”
“Asked me to watch you.” Female then, and her words were stilted.
“Who asked you?”
“Damian.” Tris groaned as she released the woman under her. Of course it was him. Considering he was the one who died she was fairly certain she didn’t want him or anyone he sent protecting her. The fact that she didn’t need protection at all seemed to be lost on all of them.
“You can tell him that I don’t need or want a bodyguard. If he really wants to help he needs to leave Paris, which I’ve already explained. Now is not the time to develop a chivalrous attitude.” The woman got up slowly and Tris waited while she was studied. It was a bit disconcerting being on the receiving end of that stare.
“He underestimates you.” Tris let out an amused huff. That was the understatement of the century. The woman cocked her head and continued staring at her, seeming to take in everything. “He’s worried.”
“He needs to worry about himself. I’m almost a hundred percent certain Talia isn’t coming here for me. Not to mention I’ve got someone I actually trust watching my back and the last thing I need is unknowns screwing with my plans.” She nodded thoughtfully.
“He won’t like it.” She was just stating what she considered a fact. It obviously wasn’t an argument which Tris appreciated.
“His likes and dislikes have never been high on my priority list. Survival is.” The woman was still just staring at her. Tris couldn’t even read anything in her expression but the string between them was slowly turning the pale green of friendship. That was odd. Finally she nodded, almost to herself.
“I’ll talk to him.” She reached into a pocket to pull out a pad and pen. When she wrote it was done slowly and carefully but she ripped out the page and handed it to Tris. “In case.” Despite the care she took the note was still written in a childish scrawl. All that was on it was ‘Cass’ and a phone number. Before Tris could respond she was already in motion and off the roof. Cass… why did that sound familiar? The question continued to nag at her as she headed back to the dorm but she couldn’t come up with the answer.
“There’s something you’re not telling us.” Tris tried not to groan as she entered to find all her roommates waiting for her. They were staring at her expectantly but Chloe was the one who actually spoke.
“There are a lot of things I’m not telling you. Mostly because too much information will be worse for all of you than too little, especially since the threat is still just theoretical.” That was definitely not the response they expected. Kagami looked thoughtful but the others ranged from confused to annoyed.
“Then why are you making us train at all?” Tris could tell Chloe regretted asking as soon as the words came out but she needed to make a point.
“Because I was able to take both or your Miraculous with minimal recon. Because I was able to take the Guardian’s Miraculous within minutes of meeting him. Because the Blakes are still throwing you around like ragdolls. But mostly because the theoretical threat is one of a select few people I’m not sure I can take down myself. That person will not hesitate to come after any of you if they find out you have information that could be useful in finding or killing me.”
“What did you do to them that made them want to kill you?” Adrien’s question caused the other’s to suck in a sharp breath but Tris wasn’t certain why. It was a valid question she supposed but she didn’t have a good answer.
“I was not worthy of their notice but they were forced to deal with me anyway. At least that’s all they know about.” She was about ninety-nine percent certain that Talia had no idea of her roll in the conflicting factions within the league. The woman would have been far more aggressive in her pursuit if she did.
“That seems like a bit of an overreaction.” Tris could only offer a small smile.
“In anything resembling normal society it would be. In my world, embarrassments need to be taken care of so they can’t become a problem.” And an embarrassment was the best thing she was to Talia. She still didn’t understand why the woman hadn’t killed her as soon as Damian told her about the string. Her best guess was that she had wanted Damian to do it himself when he was older to prove his loyalty.

umm i think ppl are over reacting,, az was not being toxic or possesive, he's been pining for elain for 3 years and he now knows she feels the same way for him,, and to the ppl that said that him being turned on was creepy,, wait till we see elains pov bc im pretty sure she was thinking the same. pls it's okay to not like scenes and characters and ships but cmon,, some eluciens are butchering him
Hi Nonnie! I heard that the fandom was getting crazy so I’ve been avoiding looking at posts and stuff. If Az came off creepy it wasn’t because he was turned on. LMFAO. Elain was turned on, too. SHE ALSO INITIATED THE ENTIRE SCENE! We don’t even need her POV to tell us what she wanted either—Maas straight up tells us this in that scene. LOL to everyone who skipped that part and those lines. I mean… it wasn’t even subtext. It was literally written on the page. (I’m writing an analysis of that scene, stay tuned!)
If he came off creepy, it was because he articulated a sense in entitlement—which given the situation wasn’t entirely out of line! Sorry, it just wasn’t.
And here’s why: We’ve all had moments where we are so fucking mad—and everything around us seemed to be going in everyone else’s favor BUT ours—so we got angry. And vengeful. And we got a little lost in those feelings, some of us drowned in them, and we did things and said things and we came off like a fucking asshole. FACTS.
Azriel dipped his head in a sketch of a bow, something restless settling in him. Even his shadows had calmed. As if content to lounge on his shoulders and watch.
bury me with this line...
GUYS!! Gwyn is so blantantly Tamlins daughter. Here’s why :
I refuse to believe that sjm would have put so much detail and emphasis on Gwyns conception if it wasn’t going to be of importance later on in this series.
Okay this is my strongest point :
Tamlins character is obviously loosely inspired by the character of Tam Lin, a character in a legendary ballad originating in the Scottish Borders. In the ballad, Tam Lin collects the virginity of any maiden who walks passes through the forest of Carterhaugh. A young women ( named Janet in most variations ) walks through this land and later discovers she is pregnant and when asked who the father is will not reveal his name and declares the babies father is an elf. she’s decides she doesn’t not want to keep the baby, having no intention of raising it by herself but Tam Lin stops her, states he is willing to help raise the child and confesses that he used to be a mortal man, but was so handsome that the queen of faries took him for herself and plans to sacrifice him to hell. There’s way more to it, but I feel there are just too many similarities in Gwyns revelation to this for it not to be a valid and substantial theory. Also the queen of faries = Amarantha, and the collection of virginity = the great rite.
Other points include :
- we know that Gwyn was conceived on the great rite - in which the high lords of prythian allow ancient and powerful magic to enter their bodies in order to find the maiden and ensure the continued prosperity of their lands.
-Gwyn is twenty-eight, meaning the only high lord who would have taken part in this rite would have been Tamlin.
- If it was a lesser fae or someone of no significance, there would be no reason to mention any of this.
- Gwyn states that ‘no one ever showed up to ask about twin girls’ which, on the one hand may be because he did not know - but also, we should consider that at this point Amarantha is at large and if Tamlin were to acknowledge these children, she would most certainly make them suffer.
- ( this is were it gets ridiculous but stick with me ) the rite takes place on fire night, also known as ‘Calanmai’ - which is thought to be inspired by the Welsh celebration, Calen Mai which is celebrated in wales on may the first with bonfires and festivities.
- Gwyneth is a Welsh name !! as is the name of her deceased twin sister, Catrin.
- Fire night = Gwyns copper hair could possibly allude to fire ?
- Tamlin is a musician, we know he plays the fiddle beautifully and Gwyn is a beautiful musician also, her instrument being her voice.
I also feel like it is evident from his small but noteworthy role in this book that Tamlins story is far from over, and although I don’t feel that sjm will give him a large role in the next books - this would certainly be something which would give him a purpose, and perhaps drag him out of the deep darkness he is facing.
let’s just take a moment to imagine HIGH LADY GWYNETH BERDARA !!! 🙌🏻 also guys she is so so powerful and doesn’t even realise it yet !
A court of Silver Flames
They were the best part of this book! I have no words to express how much this book surprised me, I enjoyed every moment of it and even thought I disagree with some stuff I think there was more good than bad. So more acosf drawings coming soon, maybe some nessian?? 👀

“You need to leave.” Watching Damian start before turning towards her in a defensive stance was more amusing than she would have thought. “You’re losing your instincts al Ghul. Living a soft life is going to get you killed again.” Tris watched him settle into his formal ‘holier than thou’ persona and had to fight not to roll her eyes. She didn’t really want him on the defensive but it was his fault for not being more aware of his surroundings.
“How did you get in here?” She just raised an eyebrow at him. Hotel security was the realm of neophytes. She was a bit insulted he still thought so little of her skills. “Blake said you refuse to let them supply you.”
“I refuse to let you buy anything for me. That’s not the same thing. It also doesn’t change the fact that you need to leave.” He simply glared at her but Tris just waited. This nonsense she was used to and she still didn’t understand why he still tried to intimidate her when she’d never once backed down to him. Even when she should have.
“You have no proof that she’s coming for me and I’m not about to leave you here defenseless.” She couldn’t help the eyeroll.
“I assume your father is to blame for this new found sense of responsibility, unnecessary though it may be. I’m far from defenseless and given that I took you down with little effort you’re not the one I would want at my back anyway.” He actually flinched at that and there was something in his eyes that she couldn’t identify. She felt a twinge of guilt but had no idea why.
“I’m sorry.” Tris could only blink at him in confusion. He really had changed. In the past, challenging his worth like that would have resulted in an explosion. The stiffness he was radiating now was discomfort rather than pride. How strange. “I know we’re no longer attached but it was my job to protect you and I failed. I’m not going to leave you to face this threat alone. No matter how capable you may be.” Tris felt her brain just stop. That was the closest he’d ever come to complimenting her.
“You were a child, still are technically. You’d only been exposed to your mother’s worldview. There wasn’t anything you could have done.” Yes she was still bitter about how everything had happened but she knew that it wasn’t his fault. She still didn’t want anything to do with him because of their history, but she wasn’t so stubborn she couldn’t see past her feelings to what had actually happened.
“I should have made her look for you when she took me to Father. If I had refused to go without you she wouldn’t have had a choice.” Tris was fairly certain Talia would have knocked him out before wasting time looking for someone she had deemed worthless. Not to mention she had already run by that point so it wouldn’t have mattered.
“You know she wouldn’t have. I imagine you know better than most the lengths she’ll go to to rid herself of those she considers problems.” The look of shock on his face was all the confirmation she needed that his mother had been instrumental in planning his death. Her guilt came back with a vengeance. He wasn’t the only one who’d been absent when needed. “Besides, I do better on my own. The fewer moving pieces to worry about the better.” And there were already far too many.
“Perhaps, but I know the woman better than anyone. I’m a valuable source of information. Either way, I’m not leaving.” Tris couldn’t help the frustrated sigh that escaped. His amused smile made her want to knock him out and use Kaalki to send him back to Gotham.
“You staying means we won’t know which of us she’s after until it’s too late. Not to mention you’re out of your element here. I have a feeling you have far better protections at home. She’s counting on you being easier to get to and she’s right.” He may be certain his mother was after her but she knew it was likely the opposite. Even the Blakes agreed with her on that. “It’s suicidal for you to stay here given what we know.”
Before he could argue with her the door to the adjoining suite opened admitting his father and another man into the room. Both stopped short as soon as they saw her. She wasn’t certain what to expect but Mr. Wayne seemed to be fighting a smile and the other just looked confused for a moment before excitement took over.
“Oh my god, you’re so cute! And you’ve got the signature hair and eyes. How did you manage to keep Bruce from adopting you immediately?” The man was obviously insane.
“This is why I make sure people know you’re adopted.” For all his huffy tone, Tris could hear some affection in Damian’s voice and when she looked she saw the deep purple string connecting them. She felt jealousy well up but it was the pain that surprised her. She’d been alone so long she thought the hurt from losing her parents was gone.
“Leave, before it’s too late.” She spoke to Damian but didn’t wait for a response before exiting through the window. The last thing she wanted to deal with was one more person trying to take over her life or tell her what to do. She’d never been as willing as Damian to follow orders.
As she made her way across the city she could feel someone following her. Someone she couldn’t get a proper read on. Someone who was extremely well trained. As soon as she noticed she was being followed a string formed. It was light gray, darkening by the minute, but there was no indication of intent. She was fairly certain if they meant to harm her it would be obvious in the string, but she couldn’t chance that she was wrong. So she led them on a random chase across the city in the hopes she could lose them. If that didn’t work… well that was a problem for later.

AO3 Beginning Previous
When she walked into the apartment Marinette was sitting on the floor by the coffee table going through a stack of papers. There was a second packet closer to the middle of the table. Lila hated filling things like that out. She was never sure how much information they needed or even if certain things were relevant. Given the unique nature of the school she had a feeling this was going to be worse.
“Do you know why Chloe is so invested in what you’re going to do about school?” Lila cursed at herself internally when Marinette jumped. She had a tendency to sneak up on people. It drove her mother insane. She’d actually put a motion sensor in her office doorway to make sure Lila didn’t see any of her work on accident. At least that’s what she said.
“Chloe?” Lila wasn’t certain if the confusion was from the question or the surprise.
“Yes. She was waiting for me after I got my stuff. She wanted to know what my game with you was and when I told her it wasn’t a game she seemed too interested in what your plans are.” More confusion. That had to be from the question right?
“That doesn’t make sense. Unless she’s making fun of me she acts like I don’t exist. Are you sure it was me she was worried about?” Lila replayed the conversation in her head again. Chloe wanted her gone, that was obvious, but she didn’t seem to care beyond that. When she’d asked about Marinette though… that was a different tone.
“Fairly certain. It was weird. Why exactly doesn’t she like you anyway?” Not that Chloe needed a reason other than feeling like they were beneath her, but it seemed like more. Marinette was her favorite target from Lila could tell.
“I think I hurt her feelings.” Well that was vague. She motioned for Marinette to continue. “When we first started school, everyone else seemed to be afraid of Chloe, or at least wanted to keep their distance.”
“But you were nice to her.” It wasn’t a question. That was just who she was.
“We were really close for a little while but everyone else hated me because I was friends with Chloe. I told her that I wanted to be friends with everyone and she didn’t take it well.” As dramatic as Chloe was that really didn’t seem like enough to set her off.
“So basically you said you wanted more friends and she started bullying you.” Marinette nodded. “But because of that you did end up getting more friends.” It was a logical conclusion but Marinette was looking at her like she’d lost her mind.
“That’s not… I mean yes but… You don’t think that was on purpose?” That hadn’t actually occurred to her but it was a possibility.
“Well, Chloe’s been entrenched in politics her entire life because of her father. I suppose she could have seen it as helping. Her resentment now would likely be because you didn’t realize what she’d done and she thinks you’re being ungrateful.” That sounded like Chloe. Lila had to wonder if the girl hadn’t stopped her lies just so that Marinette would find out how good she had things.
“So… she’s a better friend than the others?” Lila just blinked at Marinette. She couldn’t follow the girls reasoning. “I mean, I was her only friend and she gave that up so that I could have something I wanted. Maybe things didn’t turn out the way she expected, but she was trying to help.” Convoluted, but possibly accurate.
“I suppose you could see it that way, though I don’t know that it makes things better. Especially if she tries to cause problems for you once she finds out you’re not going back.” That at least got a thoughtful frown, but not the worry she thought Marinette should be feeling.
“I’ll talk to her. Everything will be fine, you’ll see.” Lila felt her eye twitch and she had to take a few deep breaths. She really didn’t understand that sort of optimism. Or delusion. She still couldn’t figure out which it was.
“Not alone.” Marinette opened her mouth to argue. “I mean it. No offense but you’re a terrible judge of what people are capable of and Chloe is not someone you want to underestimate. Maybe you’ll be able to explain things and it will be alright, or maybe she’ll accidentally push you down a flight of stairs. Having a witness is just common sense.” Marinette didn’t answer but she looked thoughtful at least. She decided to give her time to think about that problem. “So does this school require your firstborn or will a blood sacrifice suffice?” She just got a blank look for a moment before Marinette giggled.
“Neither. Though given the amount of forms, papercuts could make the blood sacrifice happen regardless. There’s at least ten pages that look like some sort of personality test. All the questions are open ended and you have to answer them on your own paper because there’s definitely no room between the questions.” Oh that wasn’t good.
“Yeah, there’s no way I’m getting into that school. The last time I had to take a test like that I was sent out of the country we were in.” She still had no idea why either. All she knew is that she’d been sent to that awful reeducation facility. They claimed it was a school for brilliant but troubled youths, but the only thing she’d learned there was how to keep her head down and how to answer their questions so she could get out. “I really don’t think this is a good idea.”
“I’ll help you. Maybe you just didn’t understand all the questions. We could talk about different scenarios and possibilities before you write anything down.” Lila just frowned at her.
“That sounds like cheating.” Marinette looked shocked at the idea before shaking her head.
“I’m not going to tell you what to put down. We’ll just go over the questions so that we both are more certain what they mean. Some of them are worded oddly.” Lila still wasn’t convinced but honestly, she couldn’t afford to screw this up. Going behind her mother’s back to do this in the first place was going to cause enough drama. If her mother found out she tried and failed… yeah she didn’t want to think about that.

Old Scars and New Beginnings Pt91
AO3 Beginning Previous
By the end of the week Bruce was fairly certain Damian was going to try and kill someone just to get out of the protective bubble they were trying to keep him in. In retrospect he probably shouldn’t have told everyone what Marinette had said. Dick was constantly hovering regardless of where they were. Tim had the security cameras from the school fed to the Batcave so they could make sure nothing happened there. Even Jason took to shadowing him between classes just in case. Outside of school no less than three people were with him period. While it was nice to see everyone working together, he needed to get them to tone it down so no one got stabbed.
“Dad?” He looked up to see Marinette hovering anxiously in the doorway with Damian scowling at him beside her. “Do you have time to talk?” It took him a moment to process the question. Mostly because all the others just barged in and demanded his attention.
“Of course. What about?”
“You need to tell those imbeciles to leave me alone.” Damian’s voice was full of annoyance and disdain. Marinette cleared her throat pointedly and nudged him toward the chairs. He let out an aggravated huff before taking one and Marinette sat next to him.
“Damian’s feeling a bit smothered by the current security precautions that are being taken. While he understands that we’re all just concerned about him we were hoping to discuss other options.” He couldn’t hide a small smile at the diplomacy. Once she regained her confidence he had a feeling she’d be a formidable negotiator.
“Did you have something in mind?” She hesitated and glanced at Damian who just gave a curt nod. He wasn’t certain if he should be worried that they’d come up with something together or grateful that Marinette had most likely talked him out of maiming the others.
“I know you’re not fond of magic, but the Kwami are all rather fond of Damian.” So they were in on it as well, this should be interesting. “Instead of having everyone else disrupt their schedules and make it painfully obvious that we think Damian is a target, Wayzz and Kaalki have agreed to stay with him to protect and pull him out of danger if necessary. He’ll be safe and the person or people after him won’t know we’re on to them.” While he must have agreed to this Damian still looked less than thrilled about the plan. Anything that seemed like cowardice went completely against his training and nature.
“And how will that work exactly?” They couldn’t afford to have the Kwami panic and reveal themselves over something little like a problem at school.
“Wayzz knows Damian’s capabilities and will be feeling for enemies at the same skill level or higher. If they sense someone they’ll warn Damian so he can contact backup. On the off chance we can’t get to him in time Wayzz will shield him while Kaalki opens a portal to get him somewhere safe. We could also set up a trap so that when this person approaches Damian Kaalki can transport them to us so we can subdue and question them.” Damian was most likely hoping for the second scenario, but both were viable options.
“So you plan on giving Damian two Miraculous?” Marinette looked confused for a moment but it was Damian that ended up answering.
“I am apparently not trustworthy enough.” That was not expected. Marinette let out a frustrated sigh.
“That is not true. Wielding multiple Miraculous takes a toll on the user and we have no idea how long this will be necessary. Not to mention Wayzz will be better able to protect you if they don’t have to answer to you.” There was something else. He could hear it in her tone but didn’t want to bring it up with Damian still in the room.
“You’re certain they can sense who or whatever it is that’s after him?” She just nodded. If she had doubts she likely would have given more details. “I’ll talk to the others and get them to back off. Then I’ll have Alfred do it so they actually listen.” Damian scoffed and Marinette actually laughed.
“I’m going to go speak to Cass about possible methods of containment.” Damian left but Marinette stayed and started fidgeting.
“There’s something else?” He kept his tone gentle but she still flinched and wouldn’t look at him.
“I… Luka and Kagami are both supposed to be leaving.” He waited but she didn’t say anything else.
“I take it you want them to stay?” Her eyes came up to his for a moment before looking down again. He really wished he understood the way her mind worked.
“Yes but I thought you might as well. Because of me they know more than enough to be dangerous to you and you don’t know them well enough to trust them. I don’t want you to have one more thing to worry about.” Great, she could read him better than he could read her.
“It had been on my mind. What do you suggest?” She opened her mouth a few times before answering.
“They both want to stay. Luka isn’t a problem since he’s eighteen but Kagami needs her mother’s permission. We think it would go over better if the request came directly from you. She says that you’ve met her before.” He had, a few times. He wasn’t sure he knew how to convince her this was a good idea though.
“Why don’t I talk to Kagami and try to find the best way to approach her mother?” The relieved smile he got made him wonder how she thought he’d react.

~---~
Jason's hesitance in the doorway was noticeable as Tim led the silent lady into the living room of their safehouse in the Coventry. This particular location chosen for its proximity not only to their base of operations, but the rooftop he'd originally pinned their guest to. Their guest truly was silent too, not only from lack of speaking, but the movement of her clothing, her steps, her shifting weight all completely muted into nothingness. Had he not felt her solid wrist within his grip, Tim could easily pass her off as a ghost. Even still, the life form trailing him felt haunting. A sense of foreboding laying like a thick blanket over the room.
Coming to a stop in front of an armchair, he pressed down on her shoulder, watching as she complied, body lowering into the chair while maintaining perfect eye contact. The whisper of what wanted to be a smile stayed on her lips as she settled, as though they were old friends meeting over afternoon tea. It put him on edge.
She shouldn't feel so comfortable with both of them closed in on her, anonymity on the verge of collapse as they scrutinized her every move.
Tim waved Jason off as the other reached for a set of ropes.
"Don't bother, she can escape them."
He seemed to mull the words over before narrowing them down to their based meaning, "You're saying she chose to be captured."
"Yes."
Their guest's eyes flashed in mild amusement before settling back into the blank void of almost smiling. It was creepy, like a porcelain doll come to life for a flicker of a second only to make you second guess if it ever happened at all the next.
"Why isn't she talking? She seemed to have plenty to say before," Jason squinted at her, keeping a reasonable distance, one hand hovering over his left holster.
Tim shook his head, "She responded to one question, then ignored the rest."
"Huh. So like a puzzle then."
"What." Tim deadpanned.
"No no, hear me out," Jason waved his hands about, seemingly catching the lady's attention as she followed the motion, "she answered one question, right?"
"Yes?" He folded his arms, waiting to see where Jay was going with this.
"So it's not that she won't respond to anything. Only to things she decides are worth answering. Whether that means things she sees as important or just too noteworthy to pass up, I'm not sure, but she seemed pretty quick to jump on Bat-wannabe and demon spawn's case, so I'm hedging towards the latter here."
A startled giggle makes both men snap their head towards the cause.
"Demon Spawn," she mumbles, earning a grin from Jason and an eye roll from Tim. Jason was just grateful he'd forgone the helmet tonight so she could see the positive reaction.
"Definitely the latter then," Tim sighed, reaching to rub his eyes, only to drop his hand back down at the reminder of the mask pressed to his fingers.
"Easy peasy then," Jason sat on a crate normally used as a makeshift table in the barren apartment, unbothered by the way it made his knees knock into the lady's.
"Sure. Easy."
"Yeah, all we gotta do is intrigue her enough to want to talk to us. And that can't be too difficult, otherwise she wouldn'ta bothered talking to begin with, isn't that right, sweetheart?" He leaned towards her with a friendly smile. One that wasn't returned.
"Yeah, seems to be working wonders," Tim mocked.
"Just give me a sec, I haven't even tried," he waved Tim off, focusing on the figure before him, "so, you seem pretty calm considering the circumstances. That got more to do with your confidence in your abilities to escape or more an interest in being captured?"
Silence.
"Were you hoping we'd use the ropes? I could bring them back if you're into that kind of thing."
More silence.
"What's got you tongue tied anyhow? See something you like?"
Dead silence only this one came with a delicately raised eyebrow and a glance in Tim's direction, as if to say, 'He always this cocksure?'
Jason lept on the action even still.
"Oh, he got your interest back there? I guess that makes sense since you talked to him first. That reminds me, how'd you react so fast when that lowlife got that lucky swipe in, anyhow? Unless you were already there?"
Her eyes slowly drifted back over to him at the lack of speech from the other, not reacting even to the callout.
"Feel free to dazzle us at any time," Tim called over.
Her lips twitched up.
"Oh, I see. Only willing to interact with little red then?"
A head tilt.
"What about demon spawn? Anything to say about him? Or what about big brother pretender?"
Her eyes snapped up to his, narrowed and... calculating?
"Think I struck a chord?" He turned towards Tim who only shrugged only to be wrenched back to focus as a tiny hand gripped his arm tightly, the previously complacent figure now tilted forward and staring him down with a hard look, flickering over his face as though the mask wasn't even there. Before he could even twist her arm away, she murmured out, "You're the second Robin, aren't you?"
Oh. Maybe calling Dick their big brother even jokingly was a mistake. Oh well, too late now, and what did it really matter if she knew? Not as though it connected back to his civilian form.
"Yeah. You figured that out pretty quickly."
"Faked your death? To get away?" She asked, voice gruff and heavily accented.
"Died and brought back. Weird magic shit. Almost lost a bit of me on the way back."
"Should you be telling her that?" Tim bit out.
"What's it matter if I do? What's she going to do with that? She's not even from this country. Besides, you want her to trust us enough to talk, might as well instill a little trust in return, ya know? Not like we're interrogating her, otherwise you woulda taken over by now," Jason eased Tim again, his own words sparking his own thoughts back into motion, "Which reminds me, you travel here the normal way? Cause it'll be pretty easy to look up young women who've traveled here from France."
"Weird magic shit," was the deadened response.
"Touché."
"Why's your voice so hoarse?" Tim asked, finally moving forward to rejoin the conversation fully, only to watch her rub her throat.
"Not much of a talker?" Tim continued, meeting her eyes, "how long since you held a full conversation with someone then? Days? Weeks? Months?" Her eyes flickered, "Months then? Why? Why not talk? Why talk to us now?"
Her entire figure seemed to droop, caving into itself and finally she responded to him directly, "I'm alone."
While Jason seemed confused, it's like she struck something deep within Tim. Something that understood. That wanted to reach out and contradict her just so they could both be wrong.
And right as he reached out to do just that, the seat beneath her opened up in a pool of black ink that dragged her under only to close back up, leaving his hand outstretched towards an empty chair.
"Fuck, now I'm even more confused," Jason groused, standing up and kicking away the crate as he went.
"Yeah…"
