What is art? Big question. But it shouldn't be, it's just another DADA troll taken too far.
Is art this subjective matter of taste? No, it honestly can't be. There need to be objective measures. And those objective measures are set by a hierarchy of artists. And those artists have skills that are unmatched by those below. Oh wait, that doesn't exist anymore.
It simply doesn't. The most expensive art is really just art by the most entrepreneurially savvy artist. But money doesn't determine quality, although in the canals of history it will as always. People may find it absurd the amount of money Jeff Koons, Warhol and Hirst were receiving.
So what determines good art? If art can be anything made with minimum effort and maximum pretense? Sticky subject. Every artist is responsible for himself I think, for how his life turns out,for putting food on his plate and really that's what the life of an artist has been reduced to.
No academy looks after the talented, however it makes it the artists responsibility to court his private interests. Sorry if your reading this and your a collector of mine and I've spoiled some kind of illusion I created about my life. Being an artist is OK pretty amazing, I do love making things, and I love the feeling I get when I really feel like I've made something good.
That's what it's about for me, that feeling, it's a feeling I chase. Because it's not easy. When Van Gogh did anything amazing I'm almost certain he felt the same, this exstatic BINGO sensation. That for me is what art is, the creation of those things by people like me.
Artists have an instinct for what is good and it's based on what they think is good in the real world, its based on the work of artists (dead or alive) that they admire.
