book!jack never intentionally hurt his son, and was actually haunted by the fact that he broke his arm

book!jack torrance was terrified of becoming the abusive man his own father was

jack torrance in the novel was a good guy and was trying his best, and the tragedy of the shining is that he unfortunately succumbed to his demons (literal and symbolically) at the hotel and became what he dreaded.

jack in the doctor sleep novel is still regarded as a good man, but dan is still so haunted by the traumatic events at the overlook that he has a hard time seeing that

unless referring to jack torrance portrayed in the 1980 film, know that jack torrance was a good man, a good father, and loved his wife and son
