Adelaide was almost certain she was seeing things when the man pulled out what appeared to be a chequebook and a pen to go with it. She stared at him, wide eyed and close to shocked for a couple of seconds. “Oh no, Sir… That’s way too kind of you — I could never just accept your money like that. It’s really no problem. I have money saved up, and the insurance… It will cover everything, I’m sure.”
Daniel gave her a look, shaking his head. He wrote out a check for $50,000 in the name of the bakery. “Insurance will cover some things, but not all.” He tore the slip out of the book and gave it to her. “Consider it a community rebuilding donation.”
