Adelaide was almost certain she was seeing things when the man pulled out what appeared to be a chequebook and a pen to go with it. She stared at him, wide eyed and close to shocked for a couple of seconds. “Oh no, Sir… That’s way too kind of you — I could never just accept your money like that. It’s really no problem. I have money saved up, and the insurance… It will cover everything, I’m sure.”

Daniel gave her a look, shaking his head. He wrote out a check for $50,000 in the name of the bakery. “Insurance will cover some things, but not all.” He tore the slip out of the book and gave it to her. “Consider it a community rebuilding donation.”

Whoever the man was, he seemed to be right in the same league as her own father. One simple phone call and suddenly everything was falling exactly where he wanted it to be. “Thank you for going through the trouble,” With a small smile Gemma finally took a step forward. “I know you didn’t have to pull strings on my behalf. You definitely didn’t have to offer me a ride, either, but— it’d be appreciated.”

“No trouble at all. Like I said, darling, I’m the owner.” He said with a smile. Daniel lead her to his car and opened the door for her. “It’ll only be a few minutes. I can get you some food vouchers as well.”

“—Daniel. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it was you.” Aria spoke, wiping a tear from her eye. She must be strong, just like her parents had always taught her. “No, that’s quite all right. I don’t want to be in the way, darling, and I think that’s all I’d be. Plus, I — I wouldn’t want my bad luck to rub off on you. First, I lose both my parents by a murder suicide and now my company’s building and my childhood Atlanta vacation home who I now reside is damaged. I think God in all of her almighty wisdom is trying to tell me something. I must be cursed.” She said, quite dramatically, but she was dramatic. She sighed, shaking her head. “—You knew my parents, Daniel. You can’t tell me that if they were here right now, they’d be proud. They’d be disgusted. I’m disgusted.” 

“It’s alright, Aria. Don’t worry about it.” He said with a smile as he walked closer to her. “I’ve been here for twenty-seven years, and I’ve yet to have any bad luck. I doubt you would turn the tide, darling.” Daniel was also an extremely careful man. He sighed softly and put a supportive arm around the woman he’d come to love like a daughter. “They would not be disgusted, Aria. This is completely beyond your control. They couldn’t have stopped it, and neither could you.”

Aviana smiled up to him, seeing that he was being genuine in his actions and not asking for anything other than an acceptance. Nodding her head towards the last bit, she turned and started off on her slow walk back into her apartment to grab what she had. “it’s only a few boxes, nothing crazy.”

Daniel followed the smaller woman into her apartment, grabbing the boxes and bringing them out to his SUV. “That everything?” He asked, leaning against the car coolly as he waited for her.

Aria had been horrified and broken down. She could not believe her own bad luck. She had been in Atlanta for only about a month and and this happened. The storm had claimed much of her family’s mansion, which broke Aria’s heart into pieces. It was where her parents had been happiest, before all of the chaos that swirled around them occurred. Not only had her house been badly hit, her family’s multi billion dollar company had as well – the building having bad flood damage to it. She felt like a failure —only here a month and so much bad has happened. What would her parents think if they were here now? She felt so alone and she was. She felt like everyone within the company was laughing at her. 

“If you ask me again if I am okay, I am going to throw this tea at you.” Aria spoke finally, swallowing hard. Whenever she was stressed, she turned into this: a brash, cold girl, but beneath it all, she was just afraid, just heartbroken. 

“Get my phone for me, darling. I have to make a call and not to mention set up where I will be staying. If anyone thinks I will be staying at one of those motel squallers, they can forget it. I won’t settle for anything but a penthouse suite. Lord knows I deserve it.” 

Daniel had gone to check on Aria. Ever since she returned, he wanted to make sure that she was alright. The poor girl had to deal with a string of bad luck, and the least he could do was be there to help her. “Pentouse?” He asked, looking at her with a soft smile. “Or would you like to stay with us? The house is intact and lord knows we have room. I’m sure the family would love having you around as well.”

Adelaide couldn’t imagine her life without the cafe in it. It was only a little over a year old, but that year had been crucial in her recovery after losing her husband, and she knew she owed it to the cafe, so the answer came clear and firm. “Yes.” She smiled a little and let a sigh part from her lips. “You’re right… I would hate that too. I can’t let that happen to this place.”

Daniel nodded. He reached back into his pocket, taking out a checkbook and a pen. “How much do you think it would take to rebuild? $200,000?” He was ready to write the check out then and there.

Aviana was ready to protest, almost before he pulled out his phone and made the phone call. When he hung up and told her it was already set up, she took a careful step and invaded his space. Arms moving to wrap around him quick enough for a brief hug. “Thank you,” she spoke soft before she pulled back. “I’m not sure what I can do to repay you, really.”

The man chuckled as she oh-so-hesitantly gave him a hug. “Of course, I just want to make sure people have a place to stay.” He said with a smile. “Come on, why don’t you go pack some stuff up and we can head over.”

The offer was tempting… something about the idea of expensive sheets and fluffy robes with room service to boot was appealing. By no means was it a permanent solution, but it would at least get her off the streets. Once she’d put an hours long bubble bath behind her (and several glasses of champagne) maybe she’d be able to figure the rest out. “You know… I think I just might be. At least for one night.”

Daniel chuckled when the woman finally agreed to stay with him. “I’ll see what I can do. Hopefully I can get you a good suite before they’re all booked up.” He put in a call and got her one of the suites. “Alright dear, you’re in.” He smiled. “Need a ride?”

With a tight nod of her head Gemma gestured off toward one of the residential buildings missing chunks of its street facing wall. “In that apartment building right there. Or at least I did. Clearly nobody is living there for awhile. What about you?” He hardly looked like the type to inhabit Midtown, but you never knew. Her family had more than enough to keep her up in the likes of Inman Park and she still chose to live elsewhere.

“I did for a while. About two years after college that was the best my wife and I could do, but after that we could move around a little more.” He looked from the building over to her. “Do you need somewhere to stay. I own a couple hotels downtown that have some open rooms if you’re interested.”

Aviana had recognized him from the Union Station he had also been one of the people who volunteered to help some of the others get extra supplies. A small smile forming on her lips, she started to falter it a bit before she’d speak. “You’d do that? Without even knowing me?”

“This is a time where people need help, not money. If you need somewhere to stay, I have a room.” He pulled out his phone and called one of his hotels, booking one of the apartment-style suites for her. “It’ll be ready in twenty minutes.”

Adelaide quickly pushed a smile onto her lips and nodded. This was her own mess and she wouldn’t like to drag people down with her — Or to ruin someone’s day with what had turned out to be quite the sob story. “I’m alright yeah, I just… You know.” She tried to say something more, but she couldn’t really find the right words and ended up just standing there, gesturing vaguely with her hand. 

“I guess it’s all just a little overwhelming still? I can’t really believe it to be honest.” And she couldn’t. She couldn’t understand how three days could cause so much damage, tear apart people’s homes and businesses. It was a sad, sad realisation that it could.

Daniel nodded. He understood what it was like to have your life ripped away from you in one fell swoop. “Are you going to rebuild?” He asked. “Because I would hate to see a nice shop like this fall into another pile of failed businesses just because of a storm.”

“Look, look, look,” Aviana said quickly, stopping the comments of whomever was in front of her. “I’m going to be fine, my ankle is gonna stop being swollen soon and I’ll find a place to stay in the meantime. Or I’ll move somewhere else, just…” she huffed out a breath before shaking her head. “I am not going to the hospital and I can start moving my stuff into my car or something.”

“You can’t stay in your car.” Daniel protested to her. He sighed and crossed his arms, looking around. “Listen, I own a couple hotels downtown. I’ll pay for you to live there until you can find a place to live.”

Adelaide truly did feel blessed that she and her daughter Maia had made it safely through the storm, along with their beloved pets and their home in Virginia Highlands. But her small café in Midtown hadn’t been so lucky… 

The brunette was standing in the ruins, picking up things she hoped she could salvage, while doing her best not to cry. It would take months to restore it, and even then, all the keepsakes and knick-knacks given to her by customers would be forever lost. 

When she heard the crunching of debris under soles that were not her own, she looked up and quickly dried her eyes. “Sorry, we’re… Closed.” It was such a stupid thing to say, because of course they were. Adelaide just didn’t know what to do.

Daniel didn’t find himself in Midtown often. But, hearing of the destruction that had turn through the neighborhood broke his heart, and he wanted to go down to see if he could help. His charitable mind wanted to heal the neighborhood, but he also knew a lot of his business went down in this area, and he wanted to make sure nothing got messed up.

When the man turned the corner, he saw a woman in a torn cafe. His heart went out to her, and he slowly stepped out onto the broken glass. “I suppose so.” Daniel looked down at her. “Are you alright?”

      “Knowing this weather, it’ll get cold soon enough.” Hades stated, taking the blanket from the man. “Thanks for this.” He grinned ever so slightly before setting his blanket down and looking around the crowd. Seeing what the man was doing woke up the soldier and detective sides of him. “Have you handed food out already? If not, i’d love to help you out.”

“You’re probably right. Thankfully there are more blankets in the closet.” Daniel looked up at the man and shook his head. “No, people have been grabbing things from the kiosks. How about you help me take these out and then we can do that?”

“Yeah,” she shrugged. “Probably just me looking to bring a bit of excitement around here…” It was sarcasm, of course - nothing about this screamed for the need of more excitement, but maybe Alice’s years in the field had just led her to being something of an adrenaline junkie. 

Daniel snorted. “Go outside for a couple minutes. That’ll be enough excitement for a few months.”
