on the history of New-York City.  He contributed a lot to the city,

but also some found his powerful agenda as a problematic.

Cooper square committee is a rare example of residents who

didn’t surrender to the higher powers of the government, the

market and to Robert Moses. With a great belief, Cooper square

committee is the voice of the empowers, the voice of the people.

My project scrutunizes the relations between private and public

ownership and document the history of the East Village through

this topic.

Beyond the walls

“You can call it Upper Yorkville, you can call it Upper Manhattan but it will always be El-Barrio.”

Our project explores the story behind the murals in East Harlem. Also known as “El Barrio,” the neighborhood is famous for its rich Puerto Rican culture and street art scene. The murals decorating its walls represent the diversity present in the neighborhood, political activism, and empowerment for the community. Through both adversity and celebration, art brings people together and creates distinct sense of place. This documentary seeks to bring a voice to the art and to depict the neighborhood through its murals, through the power of art.

A Question of Power. In the east village the tenants have rights. From 1960 the Cooper square committee works for their rights, to preserve the past, live in the present and prepare for the future. The Village view housing presents the ideas of 1960 and the affordable housing. It built on two blocks and demonstrates the plan of sharing community. St. Marks church host today events of The Cooper committee organization. The church built on 1799 and become an important landmark in the lower east side of Manhattan. The church that originally designed as a family chapel in 1652 planned with triangular facade to the corner of the streets - E10 street and 2nd Avenue. The Tompkins square library operated since 1904 and become a key role in the lower east side community from 1960. The Village view housing, St.Marks church and the Tompkins library built in different decades and have different function but they are all have an important impact on the society of the east village in the past, today and because of the Cooper square committee, also in the future.

- The three structures refer in three different ways to the block and to the street. Therefore, I decided to make two sections that cut the urban space between the Village view housing - one to the east side - ST.Marks church and the second to the west side to the Tompkins library.

Cooper square - two street section. Two faces to one building. Open and close. Project by Robert Moses, in the 60′s. The Idea of the Cooper Committee housing starts. After mapping and finding the years when each building in the area was built, I decided to focus in this building.... and give my own interpretation... and to offer some new relationship in the street.

Cooper Square Committee is a unique organization in the city of New-York. Where most of the land-use in Manhattan divided between the government and private owners, this area dedicated to the people who don’t have the possibility to live in such a prime location. So who has the power ? in this specific community the tenants took the responsibility for the present ( from 1959 ) and especially for the future.  Reference : 1). fragment 2). Where is the door ?

Sometimes we have hints for hidden space. We almost can touch it, to feel it, to breath it but we can’t reach it. New-York is city of secrets, layers and the space between them.
