sorry to Disc Horse at you but re: that āenjoying bad things with a critical eye postā for one thing it still does matter that itās being produced but the main point I want to get to is that it HEAVILY depends on if youāre bringing in āproblematicā elements bcs you want to explore the subject or if youāre just being voyeuristic about it. Like, I can have there be in*est in a story if itās just kinda there & Iām not being weird abt it but like if it starts getting like its being focused 1/2
2/2 on in a way thatās like āokay youāre kind of focusing on that like,,, a lot???ā in a freaky/almost fetishistic way THATS when it gets freaky, yknow?? Like itās the difference between a csa survivor working with their therapist to address their trauma via fiction (though I wouldnāt recommend they share it on the internet) vs some rando writing rape fic bcs they want to and think itās hot
(3/2 ADDENDUM) Thatās not no say that no oneās allowed to write about [thing] ever, you just gotta be careful of being respectful or at least not weird abt it. I guess thisād be a middle ground of sorts - though sadly weirdos would still latch on bcs thats just how it is sometimes š Thanks for acknowledging this and I hope your night is OK
If youāre on mobile and tumblr doesnāt cut this because as usual itās a fucking bastard and doesnāt do anything right i am so fuxking sorry
((before i go rattling off, thank you for coming to me with your thoughts like this. I hope, regardless of any decisions or feelings what i say may cause you to feel or make, that you also have and have had a great day(24 hour period covering morning, afternoon, or night depending on your timezone and/or sleep schedule and/or plans) as well! Itād be nice if we could understand each other, too, but I understand if that isnāt the case, whether because of different perspectives or incoherency. š Weāre all doing our bests out here, i think.
Anyway anon idk what disc horse means(aside from sounding like discourse) and google was only slightly insightful but i assume you mean you wanna have a conversation or just share your thoughts with me in regards to this subject and thatās cool by me; we can have this in private if youād like(though as of posting this i am going to A Nap), but iām about being open with my shit lately because transparency is good and lying in the past has done me more harm than good so!!!
CSA and incest survivor myself here, but thatās a formality HERE IS MY ACTUAL RESPONSE:
In terms of productionā¦sometimes youāve just gotta have it out there. Like how sometimes writing in a diary doesnāt have the same satisfaction as venting to somebodyāsometimes being heard is important with these things as is being able to share them. Similarly, itās important to be able to find these things because, well. You realize you arenāt alone and perhaps things arenāt quite so strange as they may be made out to be when you realize somebody else does it.
Peopleās fetishes are kinda their business. Fetishising something(especially when itās limited to fictional content) doesnāt necessarily(in my experience, very, very rarely even) have any reflection of oneās beliefs and the like irl. Moreover, itās not something that we can really controlāand unless itās being enacted on another human being or real life existing entity, not something that does anybody any harm either. If somebody wants to write rape fics because they want to and think itās hot thenā¦idk thatās their business? You donāt know the whole proccess behind. You sure arenāt owed an explanation of āi made this because this reason.ā and, censorship arguments aside, i reenforce that sharing these things(with all the proper warnings and labels so they can be avoided) is better than keeping it to yourself because. Well, again, it tends to help to know you arenāt alone in things, you feel me? And some people arenāt content creatorsāinstead they need to engage what is made by a creator, and that will help them through whatever(hopefully personal and non-targeted/damaging thing) they may need
Maybe you donāt recommend publishing things or you find something weird or disturbing or uncomfortable, and you have all the right to that feeling and Iām not saying youāre wrong for it!! But others arenāt wrong for not feeling the same way unless theyāre, y'know, actually deliberately encouraging a harmful thought or behavior irl or god forbid actually doing that thing?
Sometimes you just want toā¦make stuff. Write stuff, draw stuff, think stuff, and unless youāre going and dealing somebody some direct harm or damage or using it to hurt somebody or things like that, and as long as youāre labeling things properlyā¦yeah, maybe itās weird or disturbing or uncomfortable for some people, yes somebody might mishandle it or misinterpret it or misunderstand it or you in the proccess, but. Again, so can damn near anything. Not every piece of content is made for every person or their comfort, y'know? Iām allergic to strawberry, so i just avoid things i know contains it. Itās not harmless for me, but if iām not consuming it, itās not a problem.
Weāre responsible for our own content intake. And i donāt really encourage letting othersā discomforts manage your actions (again, obviously not including actual shit that actually directly hurts somebody or is meant to be damaging for somebody.) Yes, intentions and actual effects are different, the actual effect should be taken into account for certain, but writing a story and having it somewhere published for you to share with others for any (nonharmful) reason is not what i can call a damaging action. Again, weird or not, fetishised or not, unless itās like. Like a comment i saw once on an animation that was, to say the absolute least about what it said, āman i wish you could do this irl but there would be consiquencesā like something that very clearly says 'i think x is or should be considered acceptable irl,ā with some exceptions because some things are not as bad as our taboos make them out to be(consensual incest between two adults, for example,) unless itās like that? Then itās fiction, itās a production, perhaps it should be prefaced or interlaced with 'remember this is badā but i feel like thatās severely infantilizing the content consumer to assume this warning is needed when the 'this contains xyzā warning has already been provided, but ultimately i feel it should be allowed to be produced/to exist/sharedāagain, with the appropriate warnings, tags, etc so it can be avoided.
Idk. āItās weird/grossā is different to me from āitās promotional or says itās okay.ā Venting or having it out or sharing it with others with similar interests/in need of similar outlets/stimulation, I think, is ultimately better than just keeping it in or, of course, actually going out and doing something horrible to an actual person.
But I do agree that things can be done tastefully/respectfully, and itād be nice if they were done that way butā¦i also understand that sometimes the language or presentation is to be, well, disturbing for effect or emphasis and so on. And in the case of fixation, fetishization, etcā¦it can be a bit hard to portray things with the level desired and be tasteful(assuming tastefulness is desired) and I just tend to give the benefit of the doubt that we all understand that xyz isnāt okay? Maybe thatās overly kind of me lol but. As someone who, for example, writes Ghetsis and occasionally writes narration with an amount of his perspective in mind, sometimes the intention just isnāt a respectful/tasteful perspective. Sometimes itās from some savage who thinks their actions or thoughts are okay, if that makes sense, whatever the desired effect/intention may be(and, again, this should not be an actual promotional one but, for example, if I write Ghetsis explaining why itās totally fine for him to murder children who know his plansā¦itās best to have the effect of 'this is convincing.ā not because i esnt somebody to think murder is justified, but because i want them to understand 'he thinks this is okayā and perhaps to get a feeling of 'this is gross/disturbing that he feels this is okayā and especially in the case of ghetsis āi donāt know how well i can argue against this/i understand what heās saying/his logic is sound and knowing/feeling that makes me feel uncomfortable/concerned/gross/etcāāa feeling of 'this is a human doing these things, call him a monster as you will but every human is just as capable, including youā you know? Like when people see photos of horrible people in history just doing wtf ever and theyāre like "what the hell they were a regular human who breathed air and ate food like me!?ā Lmao. Idk if that made sense but. Hopefully it did
And, yes, you could just find private groups for fixation/fetishistic purposes, but you canāt really find a private space without any publication of the space, you feel me? I canāt look for something people wonāt talk about/publicize. If itās not on the map and there are no signs indicating it, you probably wonāt find a place unless you go opening every door in search of something like it(which is rude, donāt go opening random doors.) God forbid there not be a visible door.
So a certain degree of openness is kinda necessaryāitās no oneās responsibility but your own to control your content intake, unless itās literally thrust upon you, so even if itās weird or uncomfortable you justā¦donāt partake, y'know? Even at 12 reading nsfw fanfiction I understood that. Itās my choice to see the R-18, the 'do not read unless youāre x ageā 'are you at least x age?ā and hit 'yesā anyway.
Unrelated: I donāt get why this isnāt usually something that comes up with regular violence (outside of like. A handful of countries. I know Australia is one, and sometimes Germany too.) Like for sure is sexual violence psychologically damaging trust me i know but iām always so confused when itās like. Well understood that a violent video game is just a game, just for fun, but sexual things are a totally different entity. Itās a weird sort of prudence i guess, but also a different subject entirely so. Not related. Just a thought i have whenever these kinds of things come up.
