Just finished my semi-annual reread of The Host and I think Iām gonna need to write an aftg crossover fic. Thereās so much potential there:
- Neil is a wanderer in his own right, both he and Wanda have lived aimlessly and without a strong sense of person up until the events of their books
- Ian and Kyle arenāt technically twins but they look similar (except for a more frequently broken nose) and sound the same enough to be mistaken when they take on a different tone. So boom, Andrew and Aaron
- they literally live in a den! Call Jebās caves The Foxhole, my god this writes itself
- āHope was a dangerous, disquieting thing, but he thought perhaps he liked it.ā from Neil and āHope was a silly thing in my situation, but it seeped into me anyway, coloring my perceptions more brightly than before.ā from Wanda
*note: there are super weird age gap and consent things from The Host that I would rework for aftg because obviously that wouldnāt fly with our boys
What would be the mechanism for transformation for Twilight But Mermaids? Because the story absolutely can't work if Ella (Bella) becoming a mermaid too isn't somehow on the table.
So it can't just be like oh you're born a mermaid or not. And to get the Twilight ~feel Adrian (Edward) has to angst about being a mermaid. Which on the surface is kind of like, lol, but then you remember Edward angsted about sparkling so it's totally in character.
Are they just like, underwater vampires? With virtually the same mechanics? They drink blood but the Corals (Cullens) opt for marine animal blood vs other mermaids who lure people to sea and pull them under to feed on them? Caspian (Carlisle) saving drowning people rather than eating them by turning them into mermaids . . . how? Is the transformation also via bite? Or is it something else? A underwater 'kiss' given to the drowning? Mabye lungs have to be filled with water for it to work, hence the risk and the "no Ella I cannot risk it going wrong, it's harder than you think" blah blah blha.
And oh, oh, oh!! It's reverse Twilight in that they can't go out on RAINY days because the rain would reveal their merfolk nature! Maybe not full-on tails-in-the-rain because the secret would be out by now but instead of sparkling like scales appear on their skin when it gets wet? So they for sure don't live in Forks, but it does need to be somewhere coastal. Just less rainy.
Finn (Emmett) got turned because he lost a fight with a shark, obviously.
this is your reminder that jack abbot is DISABLED. he is missing the lower half of his right leg which would mess with his balance significantly.
he wouldnāt balance or sit on his knees.
at home, he would probably be on crutches ESPECIALLY if heās just woken up.
most amputees, from my understanding, wear their prosthetics as little as possible unless theyāre out of the house.
also with that said, heās probably not fucking you or robby or dennis or wherever with it on either. itād be uncomfortable and inconvenient for him.
he has a shower chair! (thank you for this one @mixedfandomfics )
jack is disabled, donāt erase that part of him. if youāre uncomfortable with that, ask yourself why.
if itās because you donāt know enough about it, ask questions and do your research. any other reason? maybe do some inner work.
Abbot (as we already know) is a HUGE flirt. Dude flirts with everyone. Literally anyone, anywhere, it does not matter, he will flirt with them.
Which of course makes Whitaker's secret little crush on him even more humiliating, watching him flirt with literally everyone⦠well, everyone except Dennis.
No, he barely even bothers acknowledging Dennis, at most says his name in passing to direct him to a case. He can barely even look Dennis in the eyes, and when Dennis does catch Jack looking at him, itās to find the attending glaring at him from across the hub.
And Dennis is half convinced Jack hates him with how he clams up whenever they end up in the same orbit as each other. The man barely manages to string together more than two words to make jilted small talk.
So yeah, Dennis wonders if itās a one sided rivalry over Robby warming up to Dennis so fast. If Jack feels like Dennis is somehow getting in the way of their friendship.
And he hates it, because he just⦠doesnāt understand what he did to make Jack dislike him so much. Jack gets along so easily with everyone else, fuck he flirts with anyone with a pulse.
Of course what Whitaker doesnāt know is that Abbot has a MASSIVE fucking crush on him, and he literally cannot make his brain work around the boy. Like Jackās brain just goes on an endless loop babbling about how pretty and talented Dennis is whenever he gets within five feet of the suntanned farm boy.
He canāt help trying to avoid Dennis at all costs, he canāt take the chance that he might accidentally kill someone because his brain got stuck staring at how one of Dennisās curls caught the light and suddenly made him look like a literal angel.
He canāt function if heās reduced to a puddle of hormones and yearning. So he does his best to avoid the problem.
It all comes to a head when Dennis starts his night shift rotation, and Jackās avoidance only getās worse and more pronounced. Because somehow, more exposure to the kid only ratchets up his desire. Jack literally has to run from him at one point to save himself the embarrassment of getting hard mid trauma.
So Dennis corners Jack in the stairwell one day. Demanding Jack explain what the fuck his problem is, because Dennis is a good fucking doctor and he doesnāt deserve to have his attending treating him like heās a pariah.
And Jack, like a deer in headlights, just stares at how pretty Dennis is when heās angry. Bright blue eyes shining with frustration, forearm muscles flexed and looking deliciously thick as he rudely pokes Jack in the shoulder for his lack of a response.
Itās only when Dennis huffs and turns to storm off, assuming this is all a lost cause, that Jack reaches out to snag his wrist and pull him back.
The element of surprise on his side, pulling a stumbling Dennis right into his chest, where he slots their mouths together like heās been wanting to do since he first laid eyes on the kid.
A sweet little noise of shock startled out of Dennis before he melts into the kiss.
Suddenly a lot of things make more sense in Dennisās mind. Because maybe, when real feelings are involved, Jack isnāt actually so great at being the suave flirt everyone thinks he is.
jack didnāt get what was so special about the kid.
robby nearly waxed poetic about him. dennis did a perfect closed reduction today! dennis deescalated a fist fight! dennis just said something so funny!
whitaker was a regular intern. he wasnāt even that fucking brilliant.
santos had more guts. samira had better patient satisfaction scores. nazely had some of the sharpest eyes jack had ever had the privilege to work with. what the fuck did dennis have? an occasionally comforting demeanor? robbyās favor?
dennis was on nights for the next three weeks. jack was fine with it. jack was fine, he swore. he justā¦wasnāt sure why robby was so crazy about this average midwesterner.
until his second week on nights.
there was a stabbing, the knife was still in the wound. dennis was the one tasked with pulling it out. jack supervised. he would teach no matter his personal feelings. dennis yanked it out at a careful angle. the pressure of the blade mustāve been keeping a severed artery at bay.
dennis got absolutely sprayed with blood. it misted his face and hair. his blond turned red, his safety glasses were spattered.
jack had seen this happen to many-a-resident. it usually caught them off guard, made them back away, unattractively spit the coppery taste onto the ground. not dennis, though. dennis hardly reacted. the blood almost forged him into something stronger, more focused. he shoved his hand into the hole without missing a beat.
āsomeone fucking clamp this and call vascular,ā dennis ordered in a strong voice.
jack watched the scarlet roll down dennisās neck when it mixed with his sweat.
yeah, jack understood robby now. the kid had a certain allure.
I feel like Dennis wanting to work in rural medicine is glossed over in favour of staying with PTMC (which I get is also probably bc itās a late season 5 scene so itās fresh) but I wanna see Robby and or Jack adapting to rural medicine āwhy would you do that with a tractor?ā āWhy did you wait so long before you came in!ā
Jack being worried itāll be too boring and tame but finds himself on calls to barn injuries using battle field medicine again.
Robby being able to regulate his nervous system and still enjoy intense moments. Being able to step out side and enjoy nature rather than a rooftop.
Give me rural towns slowly accepting the weird tri faith gay throuple doctors as they each receive medical care from them and start to actually respect them.
Give me the towns first pride event (equally funny to me from the uk where rainbows also celebrate health care workers I can see a rural town combining the events)
Give me teens going to their clinic to ask for advice on their own sexuality and it being a safe space for all no matter what
And by give me I mean Iām going to write it in Buckle
Dennis: My attendings just got in a fight in the ER and theyāre trying to decide who gets custody of me? What dat mean?
Trinity: *coming behind him with a monster and Dennisās backpack* Iāve decided to make their divorce even messier, Iāll give you this monster if you come home with me instead āŗļø
Shawn said "Dennis and Robby building a crib while Jack does yoga" and I said, 3 men and a baby, sign me up. (thinking of the movie). So we've got Dennis, Jack, and Robby with Aunt Trinity.
