         surprise   at   the   greeting   translates   into   a   mild   stammer,   pointing   to   himself   as   he   glances   between   the   other   and   the   sea   –   moments   later   he's   doing   a   strange   combination   of   bowing   and   waving   towards   the   body   of   water,   as   if   he's   stuck   between   the   two   and   struggling   to   decide.    “   i'm   not   sure   she'll   be   best   impressed   with   my   display,   but   i   hope   she   appreciates   the   effort.   ”    gaze   naturally   travels   from   the   waves   to   the   watercolours,   eyes   widening   ever   so   slightly   at   the   sight.    “   you've   really   captured   her   essence.   ”    lame   joke.    “   has   she   been   a   compliant   model?   ”

sunshine  baking  above  and  the  salty  sea  air  marking  the  beginning  of  what  maggie  would  end  up  ranking  the  second  best  part  of  the  trip  to  greece.  bronzing  already  tawny  skin,  a  thick  blanket  laid  out  further  away  from  the  commotion  of  beach  goers  with  a  book  open  in  front  of  her  while  she  let  her  back  absorb  the  rays.  her  eyes  flickered  up  out  of  curiosity  when  a  small  shadow  moved  over  the  words,  the  smile  growing  as  she  noticed  who  it  was.  “  hey  neighbor,  ”  her  newest  acquaintance  found  in  the  form  of  the  person  rooming  next  to  her.  “  did  you  settle  in  last  night  alright?  ”

her  gaze  was  transfixed  on  the  majestic  waves  rolling  against  the  powdery  coast,   almost  completely  mesmerized  .  was  it  rude  of  her  to  only  partially  pay  attention  to  the  man  beside  her  ?  if  so  ,  she  apologized  .  it  was  difficult  not  to  be  —  the  sea  had  a  way  of  demanding  attention  .  "  then  it's  like  saying  hello  to  an  old  friend  ,  "  luiza  hummed  .  "  your  yaya  seems  like  a  wise  woman  .  i  hope  you  listen  to  her  ,  "  back  to  focusing  on  her  painting  .  "  oh  —  erm  —  yes  ,  you  can  say  that  ,  "  small  smile  on  lips  .  "  keyword  :  trying  .  it's  not  exactly  an  exciting  welcome  party  activity  ,  but  it's  too  beautiful  not  to  paint  .  "
