It occurs to me that there's an additional symbolic meaning to having Gyokuyou's son - with his red hair and green eyes, far western traits - be the next Emperor.

People are very racist again him taking the throne for not look Linese (ie, Chinese); but the venerated ancestor the royal line descends from, the Mother Royal, was herself a Westerner.

By reintroducing such blatant traits into the main bloodline, it forces a reminder of where they came from to those very supremacists.

I can't help but feel that more than a bit of the resentment of the Northern Clinic palace women would be directed at Anshi.

Yes, Anshi was a victim of the former Emperor, too, and she made sure they all had a safe place to call home within the Rear Palace - but Anshi has far more mobile freedom than they do, being not constrained to the Rear Palace.

And, lets face it, a lot of them would probably see the Clinic as a cage within a cage after all this time since, by dint of how the Rear Palace is meant to function, the social pressure of it would discourage the aging fruit from being seen among to budding flowers too often.

Given the hullabaloo around the risk of a breech baby with Gyokuyou's son only for it not to be a problem in the end, I'm fully expecting the inevitable JinMao baby to be a breech baby.

Only for that to turn out to be borderline a non-issue because Tianyu. He can have that baby out as easily as modern hospitals. And Maomao's one of the few people he actually shows a level of care too, so he'd actually show initiative with it.

As of the current point in the web novel, Maomao has been sitting pretty in her hospital procedural side story away from the main Imperial drama/epic for four and a half volumes.

Volume 17 needs to end with her being dragged back towards (or even finally fully into) the larger plot. So either she and Jinshi need to finally have the sex so that the outside imperial forces feel compelled to bring her into their fold for her protection; or an assassination attempt against her specifically for her connection to the imperial family or some royal prophecy junk needs to reach her, prompting the outside imperial forces to bring her into their fold for her protection.
