Born and raised in Fallbrook, North Carolina though his parent’s only moved to Fallbrook a few short years before his birth. His father was an archaeology professor at the university and his mother pursued being a florist after their move to Fallbrook. 

Darius did not grow up to be the best looking of kids. He was reclusive with his readings, preferring the fantasy world to the world. He never had any outright bullies but he knew people didn’t want to talk to him. It wasn’t to say that he wasn’t without friends, though, managing to have a few friends he trusted. 

Avoiding any team sports, Darius took up martial arts when he was a kid and stuck with it until he got to high school. In high school, he didn’t do much of anything. He was a bit of a teacher’s pet all through his school years and always had his nose stuck in a book. 

Darius always wanted to leave Fallbrook, even if he wasn’t super vocal about that. People close to him knew that he didn’t want to stick around and was often someone that would encourage people to leave if they were also considering it. He thought leaving would change him and prove him to be more accepted by others 

When he left for college, he didn’t look back as he headed to the big city. It was rough for him at first. He was constantly lost, locked out of his apartment or brushed aside like he didn’t matter. Instead of quitting, he kept going. He got into going to the gym after he got locked out of his apartment for the hundredth time without a book. It kind of stuck with him, making him like himself the more he saw progress. It wasn’t easy but it was the first time in his life that he looked in the mirror and liked what he saw - at least after a year of consistently going to the gym 

Books never left his life and he went to college to get a degree in English. He started off as an assistant to a publisher, in which he went on to have an affair with but no one knew about that, not ever. It’s something that he couldn’t reveal to anyone because he was ashamed. 

In college, Darius had his first relationship. Oddly enough, it ended up with a woman from Fallbrook. Isla Ricci came into his life and 

By the time he graduated college, Darius was promoted to junior publisher though he had long left the office that he was working at where he had an affair. 

When he was twenty-five, he returned to Fallbrook a new person almost entirely. Darius was only recognizable by those that knew him since he left. And it was his mother’s urgings that he come back home and get a job. As the only son, he obliged, not wanting to see his mother be upset another day. He lived with them for some time, just in case he didn’t end up sticking around.

After about six months, Darius moved into an apartment downtown and lived there for over a year until he was promoted to Publisher and he took his bonus earnings and purchased his home in Rosewood Hills. He is a reserved type of man, though friendly with those that he interacts with. He initially had a hard time when his neighbors welcomed him to the neighborhood but now he feels grateful for them and their companionship. 

Darius is the type of guy that gives women the impression he will take them home at the end of the night but few make it that far. More often than not, Darius politely excuses himself and heads home alone. 

His home in Rosewood Hills has a private and personal library in his basement and fewer people have ever been allowed in there. It is his nearest and dearest collection of books. 

He also spends countless hours at the gym, conversing with few unless he has grown close with them over the last five years since his return. In his other spare time, he hunts down classic books to collect and often restoring books that are not in the best of conditions. 

Darius also dabbles in archery from time to time as it is an activity he can enjoy on his own. The right people in his life have broken down the barriers, finding it worth putting up with the walls they have to climb when they are first getting to know him.

Ebony was sure she looked a bit of a mess, so she hadn’t thought much of the two of them having drinks together. Maybe he felt like he owed her for doing her job or something, either way she liked making friends. She got herself situated in the chair, looking around awkwardly at everyone who was nicely dressed in comparison to herself before directing her attention back to Darius. “Ah, I do a ‘lil fixin’ here ‘n there. Miss Cordelia asked for my help on somethin’ so I came on by..” 

“That’s nice of you,” Darius told her, though she had a feeling she already knew that. Darius wasn’t typically a handy man, clearly not as capable as the woman before him. “So,” he smiled at her still, taking a sip of his drink that was placed in front of him. “when you are not fixing things, what do you like to do? I feel like I’ve only ever seen you in your work element here.” From fixing his vehicle to now, helping Cordelia out around the bar.

There’s always more to do!” Natalia chuckled. “And it’s not like parenting, it’s a different special kind of chaos.” At least that was always how she’d seen working in education. Especially as someone who had never raised children of her own. “Any of these upcoming titles worth a look in your opinion?” The principal asked, figuring Darius knew her well enough to judge writing in relation to her literary taste. In response to his question, Nat just shrugged “Maybe reading some of these releases at the beach?” She suggested, dancing around giving an actual answer. “What about you?”

“No, I can’t imagine it’s anything like parenting, mostly because you get to give them back at the end of the day,” he teased Natalia with a gentle chuckle. “that’s probably sometimes the best part, huh?” In part, the man was teasing but in the other part, he was thirty and unsure if he even wanted kids himself in this day and age. “Maggie’s new book is coming out soon, so be on the lookout for that. I’ve got a couple good summer releases too, perfect for the beach.” He suggested to her based on her words. “I wouldn’t be who I am if I didn’t give the readers what they wanted. Darius shook his head, “Work, maybe get out of town for a long weekend or two, we will see.”

He nodded and was glad to hear that Leanne’s kid was doing well. “I’m sure it’s going to be a best seller.” He said, though he hadn’t read any of her other books. He just wanted to support the woman. “Don’t I know it. And he’s reminded me of that fact too.” Nick laughed a little. “I’m sure it’ll go down great this time. Otherwise I may need to knock some sense into him.”

“I don’t have any doubt about that,” Darius knew her books inside and out, having had worked with her the last several years. He knew that the author was feeling skeptical due to how she was handling things while writing it at times, but Darius was proud of what she had produced. “I’d pay to see that one,” Darius said, letting out a laugh. “I think you’d be first in line to do so, the rest of Fallbrook would be lining up to do the same.”

She was glad to be meeting new people, seeing as she was a very social person and was starting to feel more and more comfortable with the town. “I am, I like it here a lot. Reminds me of my hometown, and the little community feel is great.” 

“That’s a good thing to tell him,” Darius had never felt that way as a kid, even now. He tended not to think himself capable of doing anything he wanted to do. Sure, did his life turn around when he got in shape? Grew out his facial hair? Took into account how stylish he could be? Absolutely, but it didn’t account for any of his skills. However much he didn’t believe it himself, he did tell the same thing to his writers. “The pleasure is all mine,” Darius smiled in return to the woman, “The community here does make it feel like home all the time.” He noted with a nod of his head, “Where are you from, if you don’t mind my asking?”

She sighed and was a little relieved, but also worried. She thanked him for the water and took a drink before looking up at him while he talked. “I know all the great writers or whatever drank, but I barely remember the ending.” Maggie sighed and nodded. “Okay. I just don’t want the last one of the series to be a disappointment to the fans. I don’t wanna be a disappointment.”

“You’re more than welcome to take a second look at it.” The book hadn’t been published. And more than anything, Darius wanted his writers, his authors to be happy. “Even if you don’t change anything, you should at least read it again. It was a good ending, I don’t think you are going to be a disappointment. How many times do I have to tell you that?”

“Okay I have to say it’s not my favorite book you’ve ever given me. But like you know me, I’m more about like, old westerns and space and action and shit. I don’t need all the like, philosophical stuff you’re into but like, it wasn’t–that bad–I guess.” She enjoyed the book far more than she was letting on but she couldn’t entirely let Darius in on that otherwise he would keep giving her the more philosophical kind and she liked when he picked other kinds. Plus, those sort of books got in her head too much. She preferred to read for escape, not to learn.

Darius nodded his head to the other’s words. “You know, that’s fair. I won’t lie, I took a shot in the dark with this book.” He told Chelsea with a smile. “I figured it was worth a shot, it doesn’t really appear as a philosophical book at first,” Darius continued on, “I thought I might be able to bamboozle you just long enough.” The man chuckled softly, “But, I’m glad you didn’t think it was that bad,” it was better than terrible, if he was being honest. “Should I treat you to a milkshake for your troubles of having to read that book?”

Sunny was glad that his family was excited about his engagement and his wedding which was coming up faster than he had anticipated. A thought that made him both nervous and excited. “No judgement, man. I won’t tell if you don’t.” Sunny nodded. “Sure, sounds great. I’m in no hurry to get home. Ash is working late tonight.” he explained. “I’d suggest going there to eat, but she’s actually helping with the renovations. The diner has new owners and everything. You heard about that?” he looked up as he finished changing. It seemed to be the talk of the town, since everyone loved Maggie’s Diner. He followed him out of the locker room towards the parking lot.

“That’s why you are my favorite cousin,” he teased Sunny with a growing grin on his lips. “alright, we can see where the night takes us.” It was still crazy to Darius that his cousin was getting married. Since known Ashlyn, he had taken her in as part of the family. He had a soft spot for the woman since he first met her. “Ah, she is? Damn, next time then.” He told Darius, nodding his head, “I totally forgot about the renovations happening.” Daris wandered towards his car, “Flying Pig?” He suggested as an alternative.

She shook her head. “No, please. You and Rori can do whatever on your own time, but I don’t want to be distracted by flirting so lets go to yours.” She begged a little before nodding. “Yeah. I have no idea what’s on Netflix anymore.” SHe said honestly. “But that sounds good. Speaking of, when Maggie Rhodes’s show coming out? I actually watched the first and loved it and have been dying for the second.” She asked curiously, knowing the two worked together. “I did.” She grinned at him. “Only the best for my second favorite guy.”

“You know I’m only kidding with you,” Darius was there to hang out with Teodora, not flirt with Rori. Not to say the man wasn’t perfectly content going to his own place in Rosewood Hills. “It’s coming out -” he paused, taking note of what she said with a shake of his head, “wait, second favorite guy?” He raised a brow, “I am not liking the sound of that and I feel like I need to withhold the release of Maggie’s show now,” he teased Teodora with a grin.

Luca let out a small chuckle. “I suppose that is fair. There are so many options that it is hard to pick out just one thing.” He added because he only had so much stomach room, but there were so many good options. “I am thinking about getting a burrito myself.” He added as that is what he seemed to be in the mood food. “And then saving some room to get something sweet to eat afterwards.”  

“A burrito,” he mulled over the thought of the food item with a smile on his face. “That doesn’t sound like a bad idea,” he told Luca with a chuckle, “and a sweet treat,” Darius like the way the other was thinking. “I think I can be on board with this. The burrito is just filling enough to hold you over until you can get dessert, right? At least by the time you walk to the next truck.”

Alicia smiled nodding her head at the handsome man “I like the sounds of that” she said laughing. Alicia was from Chicago where fairs and festivals like this don’t happen as often as it does here. “I like that plan” she said smiling at him as they walked further through the festival. “We don’t want to go starving” she said laughing. 

“Good,” he chuckled softly as she agreed to liking his plan. “The last thing we want is to end up starving, with hundreds of other people around.” He teased lightly, smiling over at the woman. It was nice when the man felt like he could connect with people right away. “I’m Darius, by the way. I don’t feel like you’re from around here.” Not that he seemed that way either, considering he couldn’t find the food trucks.

He nodded as the man talked about the oldest Rhodes kids. “That’s great. I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard things from her parents over the years.” He paused for a moment. “How’s she doing? I haven’t been able to see her yet.” The man asked and wondered if Darius had even seen Maggie since the accident. “Never is. I am, but I’m hoping Johnny’s got his head on this time. He should’ve married her years ago.”

“She’s doing good,” he nodded his head, “working on getting the final touches to the book before it gets published,” Darius had been hard at work, not having really seen Maggie as of late but he figured she was doing well, at least based on their conversation at his office a bit ago. “He should have,” Darius nodded his head, “everyone and their grandmother thinks that though.” He shrugged his shoulders, “I hope he does right by her this time. It would be a shame if he didn’t.”

She’d only been in town for about month she had no clue about anything in town and when she found out they were having a festival she was surprised there too. “It beats me” she said laughing. “But we can be lost and find them together?” She said arching an eyebrow up at the guy in front of her. 

Darius let out a small laugh as she did, “Alright, lost together then,” he nodded his head in agreement. It was better than being lost alone. Fallbrook wasn’t inherently large but when it came to their festivals, Darius was often the first person to get a bit lost and confused on the location of things. “I vote the first food truck we find is the one we stop at, just in case we get too lost and it’s days before we find anything.” Darius exaggerated in a teasing manner.

Chance always was a dedicated boy, and Sylvia was perfectly fine with letting him try something until he got tired of it. Even with all of their issues, Sylvia and Trace didn’t raise their kids to give up. “Yeah, he’s real stubborn,” she said, shaking her head. “So I’ll just sit here and watch as long as he wants to keep playin’.” Sylvia then offered the man her hand to shake. “I’m Sylvia, by the way. “Not a bad thing to be,” he figured there were worse character traits in the world for children to have. Stubborn was something that Darius had never really been, at least not as a kid. He was far more submissive, reclusive, one to hide away and escape to different realities by reading books. “Pleasure, Sylvia,” he shook the woman’s hand as she introduced herself. It seemed that she was right, he didn’t think he had met her before. “Darius,” he introduced himself to her as he pulled back his hand. “welcome to Fallbrook. I hope you are enjoying it so far.”

Maya had decided to take the day off, instead of having a booth set up for the festival she wanted to enjoy herself. Which rarely happened since all her free time had been taken up by the business. She met up with her parents by the farmers market and after an hour she slipped away, the pair of them able to have fun without her. Maya sidestepped a few people in search of the open bar when she accidentally bumped into someone’s shoulder. “Sorry!” the automatic response flew out before she registered it was Darius. “Uh–hey! How’s it going?” she asked nervously not having seen her recent ex since their breakup.

Darius did his best not to work on the weekends. This came the easiest when all of Fallbrook was busying themselves with festivities. As he looked for his next activity, Darius felt someone bump into him. Looking down, he met the gaze of Maya. As recently broken up exes, he found himself swallowing hard in her presence. “Maya, hey,” he greeted her with a small smile, followed by a shrug of his shoulders. “It’s, uh, it’s going,” he chuckled softly. “they say break-ups aren’t awkward at all, huh?”

Luca was happy to be here at the festival and actually being able to enjoy himself. It was the weekend which meant that he didn’t even have to worry about hurrying back to work any time soon, which was always an added bonus. He let out a small chuckle at Darius’ comment. “I suppose that is a fair trade. There are so many good options.” He responded before he gestured for the man to follow him. “I find that the food tends to be my favorite part of a lot of these festivals.” Luca added, as there were always a ton of amazing venders set up selling things to eat. 

“Food is definitely some of the best parts about these festivals,” he chuckled, nodding his head in agreement. “You in the mood for anything particular? I honestly can’t decide what I want,” Darius mentioned in admittance. “The games, easy to find one to play, the drinks, easy, get just a beer, but the food?” He shook his head as he thought about it, “There isn’t just one place I can think to get food from ever.”

Katie adored the farmer’s market and usually she could be found there most weekends, in recent months she hadn’t been there so she was very happy to be back there now. It was part of that excitement that meant she smiled brightly when Darius spoke with her. “Oh come now, you haven’t been my student any time soon I think you can call me Katie don’t you?”

Darius chuckled with the woman’s words, “If you insist,” he nodded his head. The last thing Darius wanted to be was disrespectful to the woman that had taught him all those years ago. “How have you been, Katie?” He asked in the name of small talk as he looked over the vegetables before him.
