Mark Hamill: There’s that romantic tension between Rey and my naughty nephew Kylo. I call him Ben, I still think of him as Ben.
Mark Hamill: Because, you know, the most sexuality in a Star Wars film is when Rey and Kylo touch fingertips. I was jealous! I thought, ‘Luke never got touch anybody’s finger ‘
Daisy Ridley: Through that [force bond] they built this kind of incredible intimacy, She starts to see that there is something underneath this terrifying person, this terrifying mask. Luke should be the one nurturing Rey and it’s actually Kylo what is.
Daisy Ridley: I remember feeling very affected by some of the scenes we did and being like, “Oh”. I think it’s really sad, because ultimately, what Rey and Kylo are both going through is intense loneliness.
Daisy Ridley: She really sees the, like, glimmer in Kylo. That there’s some good there, and she goes with it. And I thinks that’s pretty wonderful… I think he is redeemable.
Daisy Ridley: He does the right thing for a moment. Even though the right thing is a terrible thing in the grand scene of things — to kill another person. He does the right thing just then, in order to help [Rey] and also he thinks, I’m not saying that he’s right, but he does think what he’s doing is the right thing.
Kelly Marie Tran: ‘Reylo,’ Yeah. I really, really like what Rian has done with these characters in terms of their relationship. And the idea that they’re two sort of lone figures on obviously opposite sides, but they are kind of going through this parallel experience. It seems like a very lonely thing to have this sort of power that you might not understand that no one else really has, at least in the same like, age space. So I love what he’s done with them. An Kylo shirtless was, aw…yeah”
Rian Johnson: It’s the closest thing we’ll get to a sex scene in a ‘Star Wars’ movie.
Rian Johnson: To write these characters, I always have to get inside their heads. I tend to step inside and have the most generous reading of any character’s motivation possible. I’ll say this – the moment when Kylo makes his appeal for her to join him, and Adam captured it so well in his little please, it was important to me that it wasn’t a chess game, it wasn’t just a manipulation. It’s unhealthy, and there’s much that is awful about the way that he’s trying to and it is manipulative but from his point of view, it’s a very naked, open, emotional appeal. It’s his version of, ‘I’m just a girl standing in front of a guy asking [him to love her] ’… It’s Kylo’s sick evil version of that, but from his perspective - the same way as when he tells his version of the story with Luke, - I don’t think he’s lying, that’s his experience of that moment. I think he’s telling it honestly.
Adam Driver: My idea [of Rey and Kylo’s relationship] is always going to be more sentimental and obvious.
