Turning slowly in front of the full-length mirror, you scrutinized your reflection. If you were going stag to prom, you really had to knock this one out of the park, and this wasn’t giving you the effect you wanted.
“This isn’t the one, is it?” your mom asked from the small stool behind you. You met her eyes in the reflection, stunned. She grinned in amusement at your response. “I can tell by that look on your face,” she said before you could even ask how she knew. Allowing your shoulders to slump, you heaved a sigh. This was your senior prom - the fourth time you had gone shopping for fancy dresses like this - and it still stressed you out every single time.
“Maybe this was a bad idea,” you grumbled. “This is stupid, and so is prom. I went last year, and it sucked. I’m just gonna stay home this time.”
“Well, first of all,” your mom started, “it sucked because your date was an asshole.” You pressed your palms up into your eyes.
“Mother, please.”
“Second of all,” she continued, ignoring you, “if that’s really what you want, we can do a movie night at home. But we’re not leaving until we find a dress you love. If we find that and you still don’t want to go, then we’ll go home, okay?” Her eyes lit up mischievously, and she bobbed her head at one final dress hanging on the hook. “Try that one.” The second you laid eyes on it, you were in love. You hadn’t even seen her sneak that one in. It was a wine ballgown-style dress and absolutely gorgeous. And also totally out of your price range. You shook your head.

A large hand kneading the muscles in your lower back was what woke you. Sighing happily, you reached out and found Dean, his skin still warm from sleep. Your mind flashed back to last night’s events, and a light smile snuck onto your lips as you remembered his body pressed up against yours. The Winchester brushed a kiss against your cheek, sensing that you were awake.
“Hey, sweetheart,” he whispered into your ear before pulling you into his arms. You angled your face up to kiss him, a gesture he gladly reciprocated.
“Hey,” you replied sleepily. Sunlight streamed through the curtains of your bedroom window, casting soft, angular shadows across the wooden floors. As you nestled yourself into Dean’s bare chest, you realized something: no nightmares. For the first time in weeks, you had slept straight through the night. The last time you had slept this well was… well, the night you had slept in Dean’s arms back at the motel. He let out a content hum as he gave you a small squeeze, peppering kisses on the top of your head. You hadn’t realized how much you had missed this. When he wasn’t tackling you to the floor, Dean was incredibly sweet when he was waking up. Well, granted that he was waking up with you, you supposed. When it was anyone else, the man was worse than a sleeping bear.
“I love you,” he breathed. Again, you smiled. You were never going to get tired of hearing him say those words.

A/N: I just want to say that this chapter right here is the moment that inspired this entire series. I put my heart and soul into this one, and it would really mean everything to me to hear back from you guys :) also, this whole series is based off of Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is, so I recommend listening to that while reading this specific chapter

Despite the warmth radiating from Sam and Dean, a chill ran down your spine in a prickly wave. According to the time stamp attached to the photo, this moment dated back to 1864, the founding of your hometown. You shook your head, numb. How was this even possible? When Sam had told you that witches were capable of prolonging their lives, you didn’t want to believe it. But now that you had seen it for yourself, you had no choice but to accept it. As the woman’s dark eyes stared back at you from behind Sam’s laptop screen, fear rooted itself deep in the pit of your stomach as you came to several realizations. She had had over a century to practice her craft, and you were positive that she knew this town better than you ever could. In all likelihood… you really didn’t stand a chance.
Dean’s hand came down gently on your shoulder, chasing away some of the cold that had crept back up. You tore your eyes from the screen. Both the Winchesters and your mother were looking at you with their eyebrows raised, awaiting a response to a question you hadn’t heard.
“Sorry,” you said softly. “What?” Sam bobbed his head at the worn picture he had pulled up from the museum’s website.
“Is that her?” he asked with practiced patience. You had seen him do this once before a long time ago, but you never thought that you would be on the receiving end of these questions. You swallowed past the lump in your throat. Now was not the time to lose your cool.

“I don’t know why you can’t just take your stupid brother out to breakfast instead of me. I should be staying with my mom,” you grumbled, watching your house grow smaller in the passenger-side mirror. “Can we please go back?” Sam kept his gaze on the road as he drove.
“Nope. Dean told me he thought it would be a good idea to get you out of the house for a few hours, and I agree with him. You literally haven’t left since we’ve gotten there.”
“What? That’s ridiculous, yes I have!” Sam shot you a side glance, his expression clearly saying he knew you were full of shit. “I have!” you insisted.
“When?”
“I… took the trash out to the end of the driveway the other night.” Sam snorted and gave a shake of his head, a breeze from the open window rustling his hair.
“That doesn’t count, and you know it.”
“Yes, it does!” you argued.
In reality, it didn’t. It had been a few days since you arrived at your mother’s house, but you still hadn’t made any progress. As much as you hated to admit it, Dean was right. You had been starting to go a little stir crazy, and a trip to get some breakfast was exactly what you needed. Still, even as fantastic as the warm breeze felt on your skin, you were anxious to get back to the house already. How could you not be? You knew your mother would be perfectly safe with Dean while you and Sam were gone. In fact, Dean could probably do a better job of protecting your mom than you could. You trusted him to take care of her, but you knew that you wouldn’t be able to relax again until you saw with your own eyes that she was completely unharmed.

You were totally drenched in a cold sweat as you jolted awake in your bed. Sitting up, you sighed heavily, willing your racing heart to slow down. All these horrific dreams were exhausting, and you really couldn’t remember your last nightmare-free night. It was a small price to pay for having the Winchesters back in your life, you supposed. Looking over at the clock, you swore. 8:00. You could go back to sleep, but given the fact that your mother was an early riser, you would feel much better just knowing that you were near her in case something were to happen. Despite the terrors that plagued you in the night, you did feel a little more well-rested than usual, although you credited that to the fact that you were at home in your old room.
Nothing had really changed since you had moved out, although it definitely was cleaner than when you used to live here. The walls were still a pale blue, and the queen bed still had all of its decorative pillows. When you had first moved into your own apartment, you had attempted to model the bedroom there to be as similar to this one, but you could never quite get it right. Nothing compared to home, really. You groaned as you slid unwillingly out of bed to get dressed. There was already coffee going downstairs as your mother read the morning paper; you had no doubt about that. Plus, she would probably welcome the company. Much to your surprise though, about halfway down the staircase, you heard laughter coming from the kitchen, unmistakably hers. As you got closer, your ears picked up on a conversation.

A month. Exactly one month today since Dean Winchester had shown up on your doorstep again. Three weeks since Geoff had died. Seventeen days since Linda’s death. That was the last time you had seen the witch, too. Fifteen days since you had gotten fired. This was what your life had become now. A timeline of the bad things that had happened to you throughout the past month. Your paranoia had been kicking into gear again. You would only be kidding yourself to think that the witch had gotten over her grudge and moved on. But still, you hadn’t seen any trace of her for over two weeks. You didn’t know how, but you knew that she knew where you were. That she was waiting, watching, and calculating her next move. And that scared you more than anything.
You took up a fighting stance again as a pleasant fall breeze pushed damp strands of hair away from your face. It had been in the early hours of the afternoon when you and Dean had started today. Now, the sun was threatening to begin its descent, and you knew it was only a matter of time before Dean would force you to call it quits. He’d had to do so the past few days, claiming you weren’t going to get anywhere if you let yourself get too burnt out.

You stumbled into the break room tiredly, sitting down at the plastic table in the corner and allowing your head to fall down onto it with a thump.
“You all right there?” Linda asked, looking amused from over the top of her phone screen. Groaning loudly, you propped yourself up with your elbows. Your hair was in a halo of frizz all around your head, and you were well aware you looked like a hot mess.
“I just finished my rounds,” you answered. Linda’s eyes widened slightly.
“Just now? Jesus, what took you so long?” she joked. You held up a finger at her.
“Don’t test me,” you warned. Linda let out a snort of laughter. The sound of the door swinging open had both of you turning around.
“Good morning, ladies!” Geoff called out cheerfully. You groaned again.
“What’s so good about it?” Geoff chuckled as he approached the table.
“The answer to that question, my dear Y/N, is that I come bearing coffee and donuts.” He plopped down a drink carrier with three large coffees and a paper bag, and your mood instantly brightened. If there was anything that could get you out of a bad mood, it was food.

You fumbled with the key to your apartment, feeling lightheaded from all the whiskey you and Dean had shared at the bar. He stood behind you, rubbing light circles into your shoulder as he pressed kisses to your neck and behind your ear. You shuddered into his touch.
“You know, you’re not making it any easier to open the door.” Dean chuckled, taking the key from your hand.
“Allow me.” He purposely pressed his pelvis into your ass as he turned the key in the lock. As the two of you stumbled your way into the apartment, Dean locked the door behind you. Your eyes raked over his lean figure. His favorite pair of jeans clung to his long bowlegs perfectly. He had the sleeves of his signature red flannel cuffed up to his elbows, showing off his muscular arms. And that face. You swallowed hard. That face could break hearts without even trying. When you reached his eyes, you blushed. He had the intensity in your gaze perfectly mirrored, watching you with heavy-lidded eyes. “Y/N,” he said lowly, his voice a touch huskier than usual. Your stomach did a flip. You loved it when he said your name like that. “If you keep looking at me like that, we’re not gonna make it to a bed.” You bit your bottom lip, grinning wickedly.
“Who said anything about a bed?” Dean licked his lips as his Adam’s apple bobbed, his green eyes turning a shade darker.

It was still dark outside when you jolted upright, covered in a cold sweat. Your breaths came in short pants, and though you couldn’t remember what the dream had been about, you were shaken to the core. There was no way in hell sleep would be coming back to you any time soon. The clock’s green numbers on the bedside table said it was almost three in the morning. You looked over at Dean, who was still snoozing peacefully on the couch. He had draped a sheet over the musty piece of furniture the night before, claiming he “didn’t trust the smell.” You couldn’t help but still feel a little guilty. Sleeping on something that suspicious-looking, when you had an entire queen-sized bed to yourself, didn’t exactly seem all that fair. But still, Dean had insisted on taking the couch and hadn’t left much room for argument. He was lying on his stomach with his shoulders slightly hunched over and his arms disappearing underneath the pillow. Regardless of all the time that had passed, you still knew his rituals by heart. Under the pillow, his hands would be tightly clutching his gun, ready to fire at any hint of a threat. You pulled your knees towards your body and swiveled out from under the blankets, trying to create as little noise as possible. The air was suffocating, and the walls were closing in. You had to get out. It was an unbelievably stupid idea to go wandering around on your own, and not to mention, you had no idea where you would go. But at that moment, pretty much anywhere sounded better than the motel room. The brothers were only trying to help, but their protection left you feeling overwhelmed. As you tied the laces on your shoes, your eyes rested on the Impala’s keys.

Six Years Ago…
You threw down the damp dishtowel on the back counter, heaving a sigh. Never before had you been so anxious to get out of there. You had promised Dean your shift would be finished by 10:30, and here you were, still stuck in the damn place at 11:00. Roxy had decided the busboy deserved the rest of the night off, and forced dish duty on you.
“Damn!” you swore softly. As if on cue, Roxy came barreling into the kitchen from the front.
“Casey just called in sick. I need you to pick up her four to ten tomorrow.” You bit back a string of not-so-nice words. Tomorrow was your first night off in a week and a half. Or, at least, it was supposed to be. At this point, you were far too eager to leave to even attempt an argument with her. You knew it was futile. Plus, you really did need the money.
“That’s fine,” you agreed reluctantly. Roxy looked your tray of clean dishes up and down.
“You missed a spot,” she said, pointing at a perfectly clean plate. “But after that, you can go.” Then, without so much as a ‘thank you’ or a 'have a good night,’ she was gone just as quickly as she came. You angrily picked up the clean plate, rubbing it with the cloth again. When you were sure Roxy was out of earshot, you raised your middle finger at the door she had just gone through.

It had been nearly four days since the woman had killed Geoff. Four days since you had seen her in the hospital. But no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t wipe the picture of her malicious smile from your head. The wickedness in her expression was etched into your memory whenever you closed your eyes. Paranoia was beginning to overtake you, and you could tell Linda wasn’t doing much better. Despite your best attempts to put her at ease, she was still traumatized. And who could blame her? After all, she had been the one to discover Geoff’s corpse burnt to a crisp. But as scared as you both were, there was nothing to do but keep your head down and work. Linda stood in the middle of the hallway, scribbling something down on her clipboard. As you approached her, you suddenly realized how frail and exhausted she looked. Apparently, you weren’t the only one having difficulty sleeping lately.
“Hey,” you greeted breathlessly. “How are we doing?” Linda sighed tiredly and shook her head.
“Not so great,” she admitted. “Mrs. Croft is refusing treatment, Mr. Hastings’s blood pressure is through the roof again, and Mrs. Meyers called me a moronic bitch when I asked if she wanted painkillers for her hernia.” You rolled your eyes.
“Jeez. We’re having a pretty rough time, huh?” She looked up from her clipboard in curiosity.

You wandered over to one of the cots in the hospital’s break room. The smart thing to do would be to try and get some rest, but how could you? You couldn’t wipe the boy’s hollow, expressionless face from your mind. You had watched the light leave his eyes. He was only 19, and he was gone. Leaning forward on your knees, you buried your face in your hands, tears rushing to your eyes. You had never lost anyone on your table before now. This boy had his entire life ahead of him, and you were the reason he wouldn’t get to live it. The door swung open with a familiar squeak, and the cot sunk down a little lower as someone sat next to you, wrapping an arm around your shoulders. Face still hidden by your hands, you glanced over to see Linda, one of your coworkers, at your side.
“This isn’t your fault,” she said, rubbing your back soothingly.
“You did everything you could, Y/N.” Your other coworker, Geoff, was leaning against the doorframe, his lips set in a grim line.

It was a relatively normal night. You had a glass of wine in one hand, and the remote to your tv in the other. Your mission to find reruns of the Golden Girls had begun an hour ago, but, as usual, you had just ended up channel surfing instead. You already knew how your evening would end. After another half hour of this, you would finally remember what you wanted to watch in the first place, and then proceed to fall asleep on the couch as soon as it came on. You sighed heavily. Yep. Living the dream. But hey, you couldn’t complain. You knew there were a lot of people in the world who had it worse. Thunder caused your entire apartment to rattle, and you jumped, then proceeding to roll your eyes at yourself. You’d been living alone for years now, and a little thunder still made you jumpy. With another press on the remote, your tv finally landed on the Golden Girls reruns. The four older women had just gathered around the kitchen table for a midnight cheesecake snack. You placed the remote on the coffee table, right next to your pager, which was always within arm’s reach. Although you knew it wouldn’t be going off tonight, as it was your first night off in ages, you still kept it close by. As one of three heads of trauma surgery at the local hospital, there was no telling when you may need to go in, even when you weren’t supposed to be working.

“Ugh.” You glared at your phone screen as if that would somehow make the message go away. Out of all the people that could be reaching out to you, why on earth did it have to be him? It wasn’t like the two of you had parted on good terms, so quite frankly, you had no idea why he thought this was appropriate. You were sincerely contemplating chucking your phone across the room, but what good would that do? No matter how hard you threw the damn thing, it wouldn’t change the fact that he messaged you.
“You okay?” You looked up from the device in surprise to see Dean leaning against your doorway.
“Spying on me, short stuff?” His nose crinkled in distaste, and for a second, you thought he might leave because of your snide comment.
“Who’re you callin’ short stuff?” To be fair, he wasn’t wrong. Dean practically towered over you when you stood next to him, but you also knew that his younger brother towered over him, and you thoroughly enjoyed pushing Dean’s buttons every chance you could get. You shrugged.
“I mean, in comparison to your brother…” His face twisted into a scowl when you let the sentence trail off. Dean never talked about it, but you knew it bugged him that his younger brother was taller. Not to the point that it was actually a sensitive subject, but you could definitely get a rise out of him with it every once in a while. Before you could give him any more shit, your phone buzzed in your hand again. You already knew who it was, but seeing his name pop up on the screen didn’t make you like it any more.
