As the offspring of vampires and witches, bright borns are witches with vampiric characteristics. Bright borns and witches only breed more witches but bright borns and vampires breed more vampires. Vampires born bred from a bright born parent are unconsciously more likely to produce more bright borns; i.e. seek out a witch as a mate. Two bright borns mating is rare and offspring from this coupling produces a siphon witch.

Celestine is a witch from a powerful bloodline, the LaRue family. Her parents tragically perished in a fire when she was 7 years old. She always suspected that her family was targeted for their abilities, ever since the harrowing began when she was 4. She never understood the treatment her family suffered. As she got older and gathered more knowledge of her people, she changed her last name to Norwood to fly under the radar.

Edmund was a vampire born to a bright born father and a vampire mother.

Elaine was from a bloodline of hedge witches that lived on the fringes of society. Many of them didn't approve of her desire to insert herself in the matters of humans and their politics.
