Beautiful extravagant nightgowns, pincurled hair, sultry eyes with long lashes. These are just a few things that come to mind when thinking about the Golden Age of Hollywood. Ladies getting their makeup done in their robes and putting their silk stockings on. What creates the Starlet? The Femme Fatale? Let's take some movie examples:
Gilda: The 1946 film noir Gilda starring Rita Hayworth took the nation by storm. Men were infatuated with Gilda and often mistook Hayworth personally as her. But what made Gilda so irresistible?
• She is unapologetic. Gilda is not afraid to go after what she wants and when she wants it or the things that she had done in the past and for what reason.
• She has style. She's always dressed in glamorous dresses and nightgowns. Her hair is styled to perfection and her makeup is flawless.
• She smiles a lot. The way Rita Hayworth portrays her has Gilda smiling whenever she talks, as if there's nothing negative in her words and means.
• She is naturally intoxicating and seductive. Her voice is deep yet whisper-like.
Rita Hayworth: Rita Hayworth was given the name "love goddess". Her role in Gilda made her a household name. She was adored by men everywhere. She was always styled in beautiful gowns and had a signature. Her red hair and long nails. She was seen as Gilda personified eventhough her personality wasn't anywhere close to that.
Marilyn Monroe: Marilyn was an intelligent woman despite the roles she played. Like the other Hollywood stars of the time she had a signature: her short curls and bodycon dresses. Her voice was higher in pitch and she had an almost child-like, youthful quality to her.
Audrey Hepburn: Ms. Hepburn brings a different kind of beauty to the table. Her frail, gamine look and short crop gave her an almost ethereal, innocent look. She often wore rather feminine silhouettes in her movies. Think long skirts, blouses and dresses. She's generally viewed as a sweetheart, and her charity work reflects that.
