Unbidden, a trickle of fear rolled down her spine, chilling her to her core and causing her limbs to lock in place. She couldn’t describe it- couldn’t fathom the reason behind her extremely uncharacteristic stillness in the face of what she knew to be danger, but honestly she could really do nothing but accept it right now. This wasn’t a dream- how could she have been so ridiculous as to think it was, even for a second???- it was reality, and in reality she was evidently facing something far beyond her own strength and power.
Something far older than her too, with knowledge it should not have possession of.
Its words stirred an ember in the center of being, hot and angry. It knew of her- knew of things she did not want anyone knowing, and that thought alone brought enough fire to her metaphorical belly to shake off the fear-induced stasis that had paralysed her entire body just moments before.
“How-” Her voice cracked, but she didn’t linger on that. She simply licked her lips and started again, stronger this time. “How do you know about that?”
Dark inhaled slowly, deeply, the fear they could feel from the gem in front of them both delicious and saddening. Certainly that hadn’t been their goal, to scare the little Ruby, no- but all mortal always reacted like this. Very rarely Dark met someone who regarded them with awe and respect. Still, and understanding had been reached- the little gem was now very aware of her place where the timeless deity was concerned.
And yet she didn’t stay stunned for long and Dark could feel her fire returning as their inspection continued- shaking off her fear and turning it into anger; another emotion that was their domain, but nevertheless Darkness was very impressed.
‘We see all,’ they explained, voice almost gentle, soothing ‘Fear, rage, pain... they speak to us the most and nothing can be hidden from us thanks to them. We are Darkness- we made half of every mortal’s existence- even yours.’
‘But your spirit screams to us- it is so consumed by us that it shines like beacon among the stars in cosmos; a strange occurence, when your species prides themself being created of Light.’
They leaned closer, gaze intense- but it was familial concern that shone in those eyes, the beast radiating affection for their creation- however long ago it was since they helped sow Life in the cosmos.
‘You are at imbalance. Eventually, it will destroy you. We don’t want that to happen.’
