By the way, you can improve your executive function. You can literally build it like a muscle.
Yes, even if you're neurodivergent. I don't have ADHD, but it is allegedly a thing with ADHD as well. And I am autistic, and after a bunch of nerve damage (severe enough that I was basically housebound for 6 months), I had to completely rebuild my ability to get my brain to Do Things from what felt like nearly scratch.
This is specifically from ADDitude magazine, so written specifically for ADHD (and while focused in large part on kids, also definitely includes adults and adult activities):
Executive functioning skills range from working memory to cognitive flexibility to inhibitory control, and beyond. They power our daily func
Here's a link on this for autism (though as an editor wow did that title need an editor lol):
Practical Strategies for Enhancing Executive Functioning Difficulties in Adults With Autism - Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as
Resources on this aren't great because they're mainly aimed at neurotypical therapists or parents of neurdivergent children. There's worksheets you can do that help a lot too or thought work you can do to sort of build the neuro-infrastructure for tasks.
But a lot of the stuff is just like. fun. Pulling from both the first article and my own experience:
Play games or video games where you have to make a lot of decisions. Literally go make a ton of picrews or do online dress-up dolls if you like. It helped me.
Art, especially forms of art that require patience, planning ahead, or in contrast improvisation
Listening to longform storytelling without visuals, e.g. just listening regularly to audiobooks or narrative podcasts, etc.
Meditation
Martial arts
Sports in general
Board games like chess or Catan (I actually found a big list of what board games are good for building what executive functioning skills here)
Woodworking
Cooking
If you're bad at time management play games or video games with a bunch of timers
Things can be easier. You might always have a disability around this (I certainly always will), but it can be easier. You do not have to be this stuck forever.
Hopefully helpful⦠but honestly love the art & board game suggestions. š„°
Being realistic shouldn't mean becoming cynical and thinking everything is bad. Like the "that's just life, deal with it" mentality is so...unhelpful to me. People claim being realistic when they're really just cynics.
Give me realism that sees both sides. Truly being realistic means realizing that, yes, a lot of bad happens in the world, but also a heck-ton of good, too. Every day, someone laughs, someone smiles, someone jumps for joy, people kiss, people hug, people hangout with each other!! There's puppies and kittens and rainbows and rain and good books and trees and I could go on forever!!
Yeah, there's war. Yeah, there's corrupt politicians. Terrible things happen every day. But never let that stop you from seeing and appreciating the good!! The bad things that happen in the world should only motivate you to seek good and cause good in the world even more, and to be a light in the darkness!
And if you struggle with cynicism, I did too, once. I saw a quote one time that mentioned how hope is so much harder than pessimism, cause it requires you to still fight, to still try. Pessimism and cynicism feel like a warm blanket. To quote a song lyric from the band Icon for Hire, "My depression's like a big fur coat--its made of dead things, but it keeps me warm". I promise things can get better and that hope is really worth holding onto despite everything ššš
Totally agree!!! š„°š«¶
My darling, you are allowed to fail without being a failure. You are allowed to make mistakes without being one. More opportunities will present themselves. You will find hope again.

I think one challenge in living among so much uncertainty and tragedy is the way capitalism has taught us that our quiet, domestic moments donāt count for anything. The times we take to step away and have a moment to ourselves donāt count for anything. Our daily acts of care for friends and family donāt count for anything. The free things we do to bolster our connections and communities donāt count for anything. But these messages are coming from an ideology that wants us to be endless sources of profit. Itās an upside-down mindset that attempts to cast foundational human strengths and endeavors as frivolous. So, we may end up feeling that the necessities of life, the things our instincts are screaming for, are wasteful indulgences, especially in the face of so many big, worthy challenges. Just remember, as creatures of this Earth, we were not shaped by eons to be engines of profit. The small stuff is the big stuff. Doubly so in challenging times. Donāt make light of the gentle, vital, foundations of your life. Yes, huge heroic actions exist, but their impact pales in comparison to the thoughtful, caring acts of our everyday lives. Respect the small actions that make the good within your reach possible.
Which is why I believe in love, hope, kindness, empathy, compassion for ourselves & each other. š„°

You're not grown until you know how to communicate, apologize, be truthful and accept accountability without blaming someone else.

āNever obsess about chasing love. Chase goals. Chase dreams. Chase the behaviors that are going to make you better. You donāt chase love; you allow that to find you by accident, and when it finds you on accident, youāll know that it was supposed to find you purposely.ā

āYou do not write your life with wordsā¦You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do.ā
ā Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls
Actions are very important! They can either back up your words or put the lie to your words. Always pay attention to both with the people in your life. š„°
So itās been about 3 1/2 months since my ex & I broke up. I donāt miss the immaturity & arguments, but I do miss the touch/physical side. Is that normal?
Iāve decided to try online dating with the Bumble & Hinge apps. They arenāt bad, especially Hinge, but you canāt do squat on Bumble for free. The app keeps trying to get me to pay for premium, & whatever $ I have is sooo not for that.
Anyway, going to see what I can get out. Enjoy the poem! š
Be The Light (by AEA; 06/28/25)
Stumbling around, with my head down, hoping for an answer to my prayers. Wishing and hoping, maybe something good is coming, but disappointment keeps rearing its head. All the light in the world seems to be fading in this dark shell of a country. We did it to ourselves, for some reason believing darkness and greed are going to shine hope. When will we come together in this time of need? When will reason and sanity speak its truth? I still have a flickering flame burning within, for light, hope, and warmth. But so many seem in need, and not enough of us are sharing that light. My eyes keep seeing āBe The Light!ā and my mind keeps playing it in my head. I donāt want this country to die, itās the first of its kind, despite the current powers that be. But you know what true power is? LOVE, Hope, Kindness, Courage, Compassion, Civility, Courtesy; all of these spring from LOVE. The love of oneself, the love of family, the love of friends, the love of humanity, including animals. We are all connected and intertwined. Each action causes ripples and reactions. So showing LOVE to yourself and one another spreads positive emotions and actions. Be The Light In The Darkness! Be The Hope that things can get better, by coming together as human beings, without ethnicity mattering. We all bleed red blood. We all have feelings. We all have family somewhere. Remember to BE THE LIGHT! ššāļø

Feelings are important as they are being felt.
I am currently dealing with my Diabetes 2, being overweight, being older, having PCOS, & currently having tooth/jaw pain. I have to have the last 6 of my top teeth taken out & get dentures. I donāt have a job & am looking into online gigs/hustles/jobs. I absolutely hate not having my own money.
I am grateful for my family, because without them, I might be homeless. I know 2 people that have been homeless, & I donāt think Iām up for it. I keep feeling like Iām failing, & I canāt get out of this sh*t show. Comments from my parents & even a supposed friend are hurtful.
I just feel so tired, sore, worn out, & down in the dumps. I know thereās hope, but itās very hard to see/feel/believe in at the moment.
I wake up tired, whether I get 6 or up to 10 hours of sleep. Sometimes I want to stay in my dreams & never wake at all.
I thought my life would be so different than it is currently, & Iām not sure what to do, how to get through this.
This is a part of my writing/journaling. Hopefully one day, Iāll look back & know that this was my low point. Thank you for stopping by & reading.
May you have a fantastic day & never lose hope. AEA
