365 Days Later & I’m Still Mourning Ben Solo

The dumpster fire that was 2020 got its start with the flaming twisted car wreck known as TROS.  The film did have its high points–see the above gif and of course the Reylo Kiss–but its conclusion was a mess and a drag.  Concluding the Skywalker Saga by concluding the Skywalkers themselves just wasn’t my idea of a happy ending.  (Rey abruptly taking on the name at the very end doesn’t count.)

Now I just kind of laugh at the film’s silliness but Ben’s unceremonious death still leaves a wound.  What’s made it better somewhat is the fandom’s enthusiastic embrace of a character DLF dumped like a mafia hit on the side of the road.  He’s ours now and for the foreseeable future we’re taking care of him and giving him the love and attention he deserved.  I’ve read and written fix it fan fiction.  Fans have created artwork, pins, needlework, clothes, animations, you name it (I’m wearing my Save Ben Solo sweats set from Friday Apparel right as I write this).  We hope and pray our boy will return and reunite with the other half of the Force dyad.  After all, if Boba Fett can return from the dead after 37 years and get his own t.v. show, I don’t see why Ben can’t.  (I just hope it won’t take 37 years…I’ll be 88.)

The Mandalorian, Ben Solo & Selflessness

I’d wanted to say something about The Mandalorian’s S2 season finale which dropped Dec. 18 but I was busy with the pre-holidays and visits so now I have a breather to get around to it.

Seeing Luke drop by and save the day was fun; it would be weird if Grogu had put out the Jedi bat signal and Luke, the most powerful Jedi alive at the time, hadn’t felt it or responded to it.  But as soon as he snatched up little Grogu I was thinking, “Luke, you big jerk!”  

How could you, Skywalker?

Even though it broke Din Djarin’s heart and ours, Din lets Grogu go with Luke because he believes/knows that is what is best for the little guy.  He truly loves Grogu as a son and that love enables him to put Grogu’s welfare first even if it is painful for him to do so.  (And how many times has he lost those he loved?)  Din Djarin is not a Jedi but he demonstrates the Star Wars ideal of selflessness and self-sacrifice.  Dave Filoni has talked about this more than once and we know  he got that from George Lucas because the last time we saw this happen, it was Shmi Skywalker sending Anakin on his merry way to Jedi-dom.  This shows how Grogu not only burrowed himself into Djarin’s heart, he made Djarin a better man.  

Which brings me to Ben Solo.  Ben’s love for Rey is not the love of a parent for a child.  It’s the love for his literal other half, something deeper, broader, and more cosmic.  Ben gives his life force to Rey out of his selfless and boundless love for her even though it costs him his life.  

Now the difference is I give it about a 100% chance Grogu and Din Djarin will be reunited in S3.  Their relationship is the heart of The Mandalorian.  It’s The Courtship of Eddie Father with space ships and fight scenes.

Let me tell you about my best friend.

I think Din Djarin’s sacrifice will be rewarded, while Ben Solo’s wasn’t.  Unless of course, he returns somehow…

London 1921: a young woman is found on the street, beaten and robbed. She can only remember her name but nothing else. Dr. Snoke, a hypnotist, takes in Rey DeNiima. They announce to the world she has not only recovered her memory but is none other than Anastasia Nikolaevna, last princess of Imperial Russia who had miraculously escaped the Bolsheviks. Not everyone believes her but she soon meets Duke Benjamin Solovich, a man who had been betrothed to Anastasia. She doesn’t remember him and he’d only seen one picture of the princess. But they are instantly attracted to one another. Meanwhile two reporters are determined to prove Rey is a fake. And what is Dr. Snoke’s agenda?

Before he’d found this place after a particularly ugly day out in the desert, it was always difficult. The whores would try to jockey for position, a position forever closed. So, he’s always come back to this detestable hovel. No tedious explanations or women who want to seduce Lord Ren. They’re too beaten down to try.

“Look at me,” he growls. She shudders and for one yawning chasm of a moment, he thinks she’ll refuse him. He should want to reprimand her, but instead his whole being pleads for her to look at him. Please just look at him.

Then her head swivels, and there they are, those fathomless eyes, steely and full of repugnance. But under that, he sees … Oh how he sees the girl she could have been, pleading and vulnerable. The tumultuous turn of green and gold and brown, they do something to him, something new. Something terrifying.
