I think one of the funniest abortion stances I've heard was from my parents neighbor. He's a like, hard-core libertarian viking larper guy who is very tall and very fat and very bald.
He believes a fetus is human with a soul, but also its "basically attacking the woman's body" so if she wants to get rid of it, that's "basically self-defense". He compared it to shooting a home invader. So he supports abortion not as healthcare, but as killing a baby in self-defense
Y'know I'm so glad someone reminded me of this. Because this was also discussed.
My stepmother did NOT like the way her Libertarian Viking Neighbor framed pregnancy as the fetus "attacking the woman". She incredulously told him this was extremely disrespectful to expectant mothers to portray pregnancy as so violent and negative.
Libertarian Viking Neighbor's response was that people consensually hurt each other all the time, and "there's like a whole community about that, with the acronym the one that starts with a B" And his reasoning was that if the mother was consenting to bring attacked by the baby, it in fact wasn't violent and negative because there was consent.
He brought up people consensually hurting each other, didn't go for one of the obvious answers like boxing or body mods or something, no he went STRAIGHT TO BDSM and he DIDN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE ACRONYM
The curse of being a slow artist is that I would get an idea, and then it would only take me three years to bring it to life..

i hate it when i cant even write a poem about something because its too obvious. like in the airbnb i was at i guess it used to be a kids room cause you could see the imprint of one little glow in the dark star that had been missed and painted over in landlord white. like that's a poem already what's the point
you get it. you get the themes. i dont have time to do it justice. just look at it its on the ceiling
"If you accept any food from the fae, they shall never let you go" is a human belief. The fair folk stand by the principle that if you feed 'em, you gotta keep 'em. If wildlife learns to rely on you for food, you have already fucked up, and you can't just stop feeding them cold turkey. That human is your responsibility now. Because you left your peach cobbler unsupervised.
If you start feeding the humans in your yard then you need to make sure you keep feeding them or else theyâll choose not to migrate and starve in the winter. I recommend rolling something in peanut butter and seeds and hanging it out on the porch
âCaitlyn Siehl, Start Here
Grace: Do you think you can add spice to the MeBurgers? Iâm a hot sauce kinda guy.
Rocky: What is spice question?
Grace: Itâs when humans eat something that burns our mouths because it evolves to be painful to stop animals from eating it, but we like the flavor of pain.
Rocky: âŚâŚâŚ.there is something wrong with your entire species statement.
something i think isn't explored enough in the hail mary fandom is that while yes, humans are biologically a weird mess consisting of good enoughts that's just not efficient at all, the reason we're like is because of mutations that all happened because of a bunch of random environmental factors and our biology trying really hard to keep us alive in those situations.
and since that's kinda the natural way for biological things to form it wouldn't be weird if eridians also evolved like that. which means they're most likely also weirdly inefficient in a lot of things.
so i imagine after getting to erid, after hearing about how "stupid leaky space blobs badly designed" grace finds out eridians are in fact also, stupid pointy badly designed space rocks.

Youâre out of touch, Iâm out of time.

Sometimes I think about the fact that Rocky was out there alone for 46 years and then Grace shows up and just⌠fuckin solves the problem that's been plaguing two entire species in, what? A matter of weeks??
And like yeah, obviously there's more to it than that. They're a team, a Grace alone would have probably died trying to get the samples from Adrian. Or, tbh, might have never got out of his original Mental Breakdown phase and just gone fully crazy.
But from Rocky's perspective, this has to feel insane. Like we talk a lot about Grace feeling inferior to Rocky, but there's no way that Rocky wouldn't have a similar (or worse) complex about Grace.
And this isn't getting into the fact that (from Rocky's perspective) the moment he leaves Grace, everything goes to hell again. Goes to hell again because, as he later finds out, Grace bred the taumoeba in xenonite breeder tanks that Rocky designed.
Do we think he wondered, on the way back to Erid, whether things would have been fixed 46 years ago if it had been one of the Blip-A scientists who survived, and he'd just succumbed to the radiation?
Do we think Grace had to reassure him, over and over, that it was if anything Grace's fault for not foreseeing that the taumoeba would adapt to the xenonite, and that there was no way that Rocky could have designed the tanks better?
Do we think he felt like an imposter when they got back to Erid and were both hailed as saviours, because it was Grace who had done the science, Grace who had made the sacrifices, while all Rocky did was wait for him to get there?
At some point on the journey back to Erid, Rocky gets around to asking Grace exactly why he was so mesmerised by seeing the astrophage in the Petrova line.
Grace describes it as best he can, but all he can really manage to get across to Rocky is that he was surrounded by small floating lights.
Later on, Grace is talking about the stars and how important they've been to human cultures for millennia. âWhat do the stars look like, question?â Rocky wants to know.
Oh, y'know, they're a bunch of small floating lights.
There's a disco ball on the Hail Mary. Grace says it's there because it âmakes me happyâ. âHow does it make Grace happy, question?â Rocky wants to know.
Oh, it creates the illusion that he's surrounded by small floating lights.
Rocky begins to do some research.
Glitter: a substance invented by humans to make things look like they're covered in small lights.
Human jewellery: mostly involves gemstones or polished metals, designed to reflect small lights.
Christmas lights. Candles. Lanterns. Fireworks. Glowsticks. Glow in the dark paint. Rocky is beginning to notice a pattern here, statement.
It takes Grace a fucking while after getting to Erid to notice that a lot of the gifts he's receiving from grateful Eridians are either a) sparkly, b) incredibly shiny, or c) fitted with lights.
While the last one is obviously a concession for his human light sense, he's confused about the former two. Are Eridian materials usually this shiny? Is there some quality about sparkly or highly polished surfaces that makes them sound better? Or is there something about Eridian geology/metallurgy that makes their materials like this?
He asks Rocky about it.
âSimple. I tell people humans like lots of small lights. Humans are easy to make happy.â
Grace kind of wants to protest that humans are much more complicated than that.
But honestly⌠it fucking works. Like yeah the polished gemstones, shiny metals and glittery rocks are beautiful. Yes those Christmas lights you put up around the house did markedly improve my mental health, Rocky. Thank you, I hate it.
Grace spends a lot of time trying not to think about whether his species' urge to explore the cosmos (that saved their planet and nearly killed him several times) is tied to the same instinct that made his students like glitter gel pens.
Grace playing âSisyphusâ with the pebbles during recess in his dome where he rolls them in their balls up the hill and then lets go so they roll all the way back down to the bottom before he rolls the next pebble back up the hill.
The pebbles love it, itâs like going sledding given how cold the dome is, but Rocky wants to know why Grace calls it Sisyphus and not sledding.
So Grace explains the myth and the punishment. Sisyphus still thinks heâll be able to get the boulder to the top and that heâll still outwit the Gods one final time. Itâs only his hubris that is grander than his cleverness and frustration in believing he is capable of completing an impossible task. Trapped forever believing he will be successful in pushing his boulder up the hill.
Rocky watches as Grace, years after arriving on Erid, finally having regained some muscle mass, gently pushes another xenonite ball up the gentle sandy slope of their beach. Rocky can hear the laughing tones of the pebble urging teacher-Grace to push them higher because they want to roll further than student-Ruby. Rocky can hear Graces smile and thinks, one must imagine Sisyphus happy.
Ragebaiting Rocky by introducing him to Kelvin
I just think that eventualy ryland stops using words like "the" and "and" because the only *english* he's heard spoken in so long is translated eridian and the translations get a little clunky and don't nesscarily use those words (kinda like Russian speakers who speak English as a second language (think "get in car" vs. "get in THE car")) and so because of that eventualy ryland starts to form his own dialect of English that's no-longer-techicaly-gramaticaly-proper English (with maybe even a few basic eridian words thrown in there) because the human brain is so damn adaptable to pretty much any situation but because of this he starts to confuse all the eridians who are noticing a significant shift in his dialect padderns and tones and words (and i'm sure he's observed by a ton of scientists so over the years THEY'D NOTICE) and maybe they start to panic because eridian's language isn't fluid like that so they start to hypothesis that the new confusing speech paddern is a cognitive decline in grace, and if you want to get EXTRA juicy with it you can have a very upset rocky storm into the biodome one day and go "WHY GRACE NOT TELL ROCKY HE'S DYING QUESTION" and have to have grace explain to the very upset eridian that yes, he is dying very slowly, but no, the new accent/dialect has nothing to do with that, rocky calm down i'm fine I promise-
I love the thought that after containing the taumeoba spread on his ship and realizing that Rocky has the same problem only worse, Grace calculates his possible trajectory to rocky, washes up, sits down and thinks. He can go home or he can die. He can save earth and doom his best friend and his best friend's planet, or he can maybe save earth (he can't be sure that the beetles work) and definitely save rocky and his planet.
And you know what? I want him to not realize it, but he makes that decision in less than three hours.
#the thought that after starting their long trek to erid rocky gets bored#and curious how grace contained the taumeoba#so he takes a look at the camera recordings back then#i want him to watch grace get up realize the problem then deal with the problem and then realize that rocky is in a worse situation#just the thought of rocky watching grace come to a decision and immediately getting to work#kills me#someone loves you so much that they can accept their own death in a few hours to save your life
