The Trial of Legba; Final Day

The sun once more rose on the seventh day of Jazmon’s Trial, the true test was upon him.

Running for a total of seven days straight had taken a toll upon his energy, however, he was much stronger, and much more faithful. With seven days of only his thoughts and the Loa whispering into his ears, he embraced the solitude and the gifts that they had given him. Privledges to simply hear their voice. But, the reality surrounding him was in his thoughts as well.

The Wraith awoke upon a sandy dune, lifting his head. The smells of salt and brine immediately hit his nose, seeing that he chose the night before to sleep where he felt most comfortable. It reminded him of home. Perhaps, this is what he was attempting to do, to savor the past. But, of course, he knew this was not the way to become a Shadow Hunter. In some shape or form.. He must break away from it to remain in the present.

After gathering himself enough energy to stand, the Darkspear’s toes were gently touched by the waves creeping up onto the small beach. He sighed as he looked down, the sensation of touch returning. However, it seemed to alarm him as it was not the gentle caress of water, but the rough sting of a piece of wood scraping across his flesh. As he glanced down at it, the familiar shape of a Rush'kah masked appeared, split down the middle as marks of old age cut into its surface. The paint faded, the familiar ghost of Jaz’s past stared back at him with cold and hollow eyes.

The Rush'kah was his Father’s.

Jazmon’s eyes widened as he stepped backwards onto the sand, his footing sliding as he glared into the piece of his past. Haunting him, tempting him. The mask was smiling back at the Wraith as he closed his eyes. He was facing his final temptation.

The mask rose from the ground, being snatched up by a figure. Recognizable as a Troll, it donned thinning and balding red hair and a long and flowing robe, covered in patches of jungle wood armor. The color of the robe was black as the night itself, gold accents inlaid around its borders, and was stringed together by numerous fetishes and cords, and also strung many pouches of dangerous and unknown substances. As a final addition, a dagger hung secured at his hip, and a golden cap hung from the stub of a broken tusk, fractured years ago.

Ra'zu, Jazmon’s father.

“Joo not follow Ra'zu, no?” The Darkspear spoke. “Too weak fo’ a Hexxer’s pat’. Too weak, certainly, fo’ a Shadow Huntah’s one.” The Hexxer hissed as he stepped towards the Wraith, who opened his eyes to peer at his father after all of these years.

At the time his father began to speak, would hear the all too familiar cry of a Murloc. Turning to face towards it, he would recognize the coloring to be similar to that of the beast that originally killed Ra'zu, rushing headlong towards him. It tackled the trainee to the ground as his father continued to speak, as Jazmon struggling to get a knife to the amphibian’s throat.

“Ah nevah wanted to be like joo. Joo may guide me t’ de afterlife, but de Hexxer’s path is a selfish one.” The trainee adamantly spoke, grasping a knife from his belt, which he gripped tightly.

“Joor tongue is as sharp as mine, young one. Joo carved a path of lies about me through de trick'ry Ra'zu taught joo. Joo are a Hexxer’s shadow, too weak, too nimble to hurt your precious fam'ly pride. Bare'ly a Shadow Huntah. Joo do this for joor own self-indulgence, to fix joor broken past…” he hissed once more as he spat in the Wraith’s face. “Weak. What a Darkspear should no’ be.”

Jazmon knew it would not be as easy. Fear, after all, was the greatest tactic. All of his doubts before manifested itself before him, the greatest fears he faced before his Yakua, before he devoted his mind, body, and soul. The murloc began to press its weighr against the Wraith, attempting to bring a sharp, yet poorly-made spear to Jazmon’s neck. The trainee widened his eyes to stare at the image of his father, taking in all of his might, all of his stength and passion, to finally deny him the gratitude after all of these years.

With energy and the will to survive circulating in his body, Jaz thrusted the knife into the neck of the Murloc, spraying blood onto his mask and hood.

“Ah am Shadowtusk. No longer joor shadow, no longer joor Tribe. I find my peace in selflessness and servitude, shame is the only thing ah carry wit’ me. Shame, before I can serve my Loa, to kneel at their feet.“

“Ah deny pride.”

With speaking those words, the Troll shoved the dying body of the Murloc off of himself and stood to turn away from the illusion, away from Ra'zu, and began to walk away. As he did so, the spry feeling of adrenaline filled his veins as a rumbling sound, fierce and powerful, began to echo through his mask. A bestial roar, that rang into his ears and filled him with energy. He touched his fingers to his mask, never looking back.

The mask itself, the one that Jazmon held so tightly onto throughout his life, was washed over by the salted water, still remaining on the beach. The waves continued to lap at it until a large mass of water swallowed it, and pulled it into the ocean.

The Trial of Legba; Day 6

The ocean-like smells and salty air clung to the trainee’s nose as he began to awake. It was sunrise once again, and with it, the start of a new day, and a day of using himself to show his devotion towards the Loa, and towards Legba, who keenly watched over and whispered to him to continue to do his bidding.. As he would wish. The Darkspear rolled on his back, gazing up at the hazy morning sky through his mask. When, the Wraith would suddenly feel a soft sensation attempting to grasp his hand, and he would lift his head, only to stare back at an elderly Darkspear troll, whose white hair was stained in a light blue tinge, that had obviously lost its color as age passed on. She smiled as she would reach towards his face, stroking Jazmon’s cheek and touching his mask gently. 

“Muddah..” The Wraith muttered, “Muddah... What are you doing ‘ere..?” He questioned, his vermilion eyes blinking a couple of times and softening as the elderly woman would gently touch the Darkspear, just as she did when he was a tuskling. 

“Jazmon.. My Jazmon..” She smiled. “Please, come back home to de Isles wit’ me. Leauta is old, de Loa spirits tell meself dat ah will be goin’ to Bwonsamdi soon. I need joo, my son.”

The trainee blinked more as he sat up further, gulping a small bit. He would free himself of Leauta’s grasp, the Wraith finding himself to be trying to shake himself of sleep. “Muddah, ah can’t.. I must finish me Trials. I do this to make joo proud, to become a Servant o’ de Loa, as joo have.” He pleaded, “Ah can’t go back to de Isles wit’ joo.” 

Leauta cried out, breaking into tears. The elderly woman grasped Jazmon’s mask, his connection to the Dark Six. “Joo are joor father’s son! De only part of him ah have left.. It is dangerous, de path joo walk!”

Jazmon stood, breaking free of Leauta’s grasping hands once more. “Ah would gladly die fo’ de Six, fo’ my Loa! De servant’s path is de one ah walk. Ah will not abandon it for a life of pleasure an’ comfort.” 

“Joo will end up like your father, wit’ de path joo follow!”

With this, Jaz, only closing his eyes as he turned away, sprung forward with adrenaline in his step, farther and farther from his Mother’s heaving cries. With this, she faded away. An illusion, created by the Loa once more to determine his worth.

The Trial of Legba; Day 5

The Loa themselves were testing Jazmon. 

Nearing towards his week-long journey, the trainee found himself lither and stronger in terms of tenacity. He could trail on for hours on with very little stops, the only ones being that of stops for a drink of water to soothe his dehydrated body.  

He was rather close to Val’sharah’s borders; the Wraith finding himself throughout the trial to take long routes and paths, winding and steep or short and shallow, to please Legba. But as he would find, there was only so many paths the Darkspear could take. Each felt different in only the manner that a road could feel, and each breath felt as if a small bit of his past strayed away from his closest memories.. Finding it more easy to focus on the present, focus on his trail. 

Much faster than he was before on the first day, Jaz finished his time in Val’sharah with a quicker pace than he had been accustomed to before. But, as always, he would let himself rest once it became dark, to only carry on very early the next morning. 

At this time, he would rest at the border between Aszuna and the forests of Val’sharah. The trainee would halt at a spot near a tree’s trunk, resting his back against it. As he would tilt his head upwards, the soft chimes of the Loa he gained favors of circled through his mind, fading into the soft white noise that came with a sheet of rain above. Though Jaz was slightly annoyed, he almost found himself comforted after a while. Shango’s storms lulled him to sleep that night.

The Trial of Legba; Day 4

Drums pounded in the Darkspear’s skull. 

Ogoun’s song echoed through the realms of his sleep. Within his nightmares, Jazmon fought endlessly against hordes of demons, creatures, and beasts emerging from all corners of his vision, attempting to attack the city. Corpses strewn about were those who had passed in his life. His Father, Ra’zu.. Yuute, Tezeki, his friends.. Tezuli, Rhazare.. He was defending his home, his people, his friends, his Chieftain...

His Loa. 

As he was still a trainee, the favor of the Loa was not his privilege, yet. A Wraith, he would find himself fighting tirelessly against the swarm of oncoming monsters running towards him, those that founded the basis of his nightmares and fears. Pouring themselves into a large and gall mass, Jaz would find himself enveloped and unable to fight back as he was consumed.. Closing his eyes to the darkness.. He woke up where he had fallen asleep the night before.

He reminded himself to one of Legba’s lessons: to not dwell upon the past. The very Loa that he was attempting to meet the demands of currently. The same spirit that whispered into his ears in tongues and whispers of languages other than of which the servants below spoke.  Neither Zandali, nor Orcish. But his commands were always heeded. He lived to serve.

Jazmon rose to his feet. The Wraith would find himself about to return to the task drawn to him, taking a few steps forward onto the path that was besides him, when he would hear voices muttering to him words of doubt, ones of which he was afraid of long ago. These words and phrases would manifest behind him, the Wraith turning to face two of his former clanmates of the Shadowtusk. Two of the previous Shadow Hunters of the Clan.

Ones he thought to be dead; Tezuli, his former Chieftan.. And Rhazare, a Shadow Hunter slain within his first weeks of Shadow Hunter training. Ones that he looked up to and aspired to, but ones he always felt casted a downward gaze upon the Darkspear, and saw him only as a hopeful weakling. 

“Joo are weak.” Spat Tezuli, the former Chieftan moving to snake around Jazmon, and looking at him through her Rush’kah, barren and anger-filled eyes that casted down on him. “Joo will never serve de Loa.” 

“Joo will never be what your father wished.”  “Joo are a FAILURE!” 

“Joo will never sacrifice yourself for de Loa as we once have. You. Are. WEAK.” 

The two would assault his mind and ears, casting down his doubts and fears.. What he truly believed they thought of him. Yet, once again, the lessons of Legba, his lessons he took upon himself to learn and develop from spoke to him. 

Turn away, do not dwell upon it. Live in the present, and not the past. 

And he understood. The trainee simply turned away from Rhazare and Tezuli, closing his eyes. He began to move forwards in light footsteps, which quickly turned to jogging. With this, the visions of the past faded with the forest, and his task was focused on once more.

The Trial of Legba; Day 3

The sun again rose early in the morning, the trialing Trainee stirring as he awoke. This time, he found himself resting in a mass of brush, covered in leaves and strands of pine. However, it didn’t seem to bother him as much as he stood up and stretched, the calls of the Loa once again whispering into his ears. Until he would do their bidding, he would find them to get gradually louder and louder. 

Aching a small bit from the swing he took the day prior, he would have himself stretch, as well as to eat the remainder of his salted meat throughout the day. A small drink of water was found in a stream nearby, and off he trod. 

The Broken Isles were large. Larger than he had ever expected. Yesterday, he rested at a slope that spanned down into a forest; large, and dark. Val’sharah was right within his grasp.  The Wraith found himself passing into the territory swiftly, the calls of spirits higher than him guiding him through. The cobbled and rough stone quickly turned to sodden dirt paths as he would move throughout the day, eventually finding his way into Druid territory, passing over a large highroad.

Most surprisingly of all, the day was uneventful. Most beasts that he passed by him simply lost interest as he was too quick. 

Legba’s call was much stronger to him, it drew him to a state of trance, following the path with his footsteps.. Following through to his wishes. 

That night, he rested by the stream.. Unaware of the creeping nightmare.

The Trial of Legba; Day 2

The sun rose gently in the skies above Highmountain, as did the trainee’s eyelids. The shouting of his Loa returned, booming in his ears as he would awake. The same calls as before, magnified by his exhaustion. With his nose scrunching, he stretched his arms and legs before climbing down the trunk of the tree. Yet, he felt a familiar urge rising in his gut. The roots of hunger had anchored into his stomach, and he needed to eat something before leaving again on his journey.

An unsuspecting rabbit nearby would do the trick.

As the small beast caught his eye, he withdrew Qet the Keen from his back, two arrows following in suit. The bow was quickly drawn and released, sticking the rabbit in its abdomen and impaling it through. The animal pinned to the ground by the bow’s strike, and struggling to get free with faltering strength, had its life quickly ended by the trainee, who slit its throat to grant mercy to the creature.

Beginning a fire with dry sticks and wood from the surrounding area, he skinned and stripped the meat off of the rabbit’s corpse, holding it over the fire with yet another stick, and crisply cooking it until he had an adequate meal.

As he was only looking for sustenance, Jazmon took the rabbit meat off of his temporary cooker, and began eating it with large bites.

It seems he was not the only one in his presence, however. The sounds of heavy hoof steps invaded his ears, the wraith easily catching it, and turning his attention towards it. A moose, much larger than him, stood feet in front of him, stroking the ground heartily with his hoof and directing its large antlers at Jazmon. He was in danger.

As he had already finished his meal, the Darkspear moved his hand subtle enough to reach behind his back, grasping the large spear that he carried. A knife that hung from his belt was grabbed as well as he would use his stamina over force, readying himself to his feet. He would not assume combat position, cautiously holding up his hands in submission.

It seemed the bull was simply not in the mood that day. Taking a mad dash, the moose charged towards the trainee with antlers pointed towards his chest. Acting and thinking quickly, Jazmon jumped upwards, the bull just barely missing his feet.

Catching the moose by the scruff, he would thrust the spear under him to pierce through its shoulder blade. Doing this in a swift jabbing motion, the spear was quickly drawn back out, the trainee finding time to land on the ground below, skidding to a halt as his feet would reach the grass yards away. Sanguine liquid began to drip out of the moose’s shoulder as it would stumble, turning around to face the trainee again.

Round two it is. Rearing upwards, the beast charged again, this time, swinging its head in Jaz’s direction. With a swift motion, the Darkspear was swept, finding himself to land on his behind. The bull, enraged, charged one last time. Yet, it would be found it to be its own mistake. Praying for the Six’s aid, the trainee slid under the moose’s charging body, sticking the spear through its throat, and sliding the dagger in his opposite hand down the belly, he would slide out from underneath the tail end. Yet, as the hoofed hulk would attempt to turn towards Jazmon again, it gargled, collapsing to the ground beneath it. For now, the trainee was the victor.

Adrenaline still finding its way into the wraith’s veins, the Darkspear plucked the bloodied spear out of the just-slain moose’s throat, and returned to the fireside to lightly salt and pack away the meats as he stamped the fire out with his foot. A quick trip to the riverside was all that was left, drinking a hefty amount of water, as well as filling a water skin was needed as he would continue to ride on his journey. As for the rest of the day, Legba’s voice called into Jazmon as he would do as he wished.

The Trial of Legba; Day 1

Hours before, the Wraith heard the call of another of the Six. 

As the Shadowtusk Clan landed upon the shores of the Broken Isles and nestled itself into the enclave high above the sea, Jazmon began to hear voices of a higher and greater power than he, gently whispering into his ears. As time would pass, the voice would simply get louder.. and louder. 

“Move..” 

“Westward, you must run.” 

“Move, Wraith, RUN! Do as I command you!”

As he would find himself unable to bear the adrenaline and outside forces pushing him towards his fate, he would call upon the council of his Master, Zu’Daba, a fully-fledged Shadow Hunter of his own right. After gaining his initial approval, the Darkspear began to trek on foot, no regard for the Clan he would leave behind as he would trek his holy journey. 

He had prepared the most for this one trial, which, was a trial of endurance and strength. From the day he was suited in chains, he would attempt to run around the path of the city he lived in, building his leg strength, to prepare for the day Legba would ultimately call for him. 

And, it had started today. For hours, up to the setting of the sun and beyond, the Darkspear kept his pace, yet fleeted past the tough ground and snow, stepping and trudging through stones, and seeing himself through the vast wilderness of Highmountain. But, as he would soon find, he cannot simply last on strength alone. 

Yet, he knew the beasts of Highmountain were strong and hardy, as they had to be in this tough land. After hours of running, he would stop in his path to catch his breath, tiredly. It was well past midnight, as the two moons that illuminate Azeroth’s skies at night dotted the sky above him, hovering like large white discs. As of now, the adrenaline in his veins had stopped pumping, and he simply needed to rest. 

With his heart pumping, he would climb the trunk of a nearby and large tree, nestling on a particularly large branch. Finding it easy to close his eyelids, the trainee drifted off to sleep.

The First Trial

Today is de day o’ my first trial ta’ become a Shadow Huntah. 

Wit’ my Yakua a week behind me, I now go into de jaws o’ de Dark Six’s domain; to be tested, and to see if ah can withstand de great burden that I will have ta’ hold if ah complete my training and defeat my teacher. 

I do not know which of the Six will be trying me today. But I pray that ah will appease dem. 

I will write soon, if I make et through.
