Ok this is insane I’m going insane what do you mean an event triggers jockington to grow the beard.

my theory is that the beard used as the first signifier that the two routes (normal and weird) lead to different prophecy outcomes. So in the normal route where the prophecy is followed, Jockington grows the beard and in the weird route maybe he doesn’t?

Additionally, maybe he only becomes a goner in the weird route because his speech seems much more coherent now than in chapter 4. That’s a little more far fetched though.
