Body Prop and Environment video 3
Materials: phone camera, wooden chair, flower fan
Statement of intent:
Body Prop and Environment is an exploratory project that aims to investigate the relationship between the human body, the environment, and the objects we interact with. Using a chair as a prop, the project involves performative art that showcases the chair's versatility and its ability to shape the human body's movements and interactions. Through the different scenarios, I was able to hold and move the chair around in various environments, exploring the potential meanings and symbolism behind the chair's position and movement. The project will challenge traditional notions of how we use and interact with objects, highlighting the importance of physicality and our relationship with the world around us.

Special Collections: Shrines, Alters, and Pedestals Final Proposal
NAME: Darlen Gutierrez
TITLE: Growth
MATERIALS: plywood, butterfly kit, glass dome, small acrylic cases
STATEMENT OF INTENT:
Special Collections Objects: The special collections objects featured in this project are the butterfly in its various life stages, including the egg, caterpillar, cocoon, and adult butterfly. These objects will be displayed on a wooden pedestal with an arch in the back, and a glass dome covering the adult butterfly.
Materials and Fabrication Process: The wooden pedestal will be made from real wood and will have an arch in the back. The pedestal will be approximately 3 feet tall. The fabrication process will involve cutting and shaping the wood to the desired dimensions, sanding it to a smooth finish, and then staining it to achieve a natural, rustic look. The glass dome will be approximately 8 inches in diameter and will sit atop the pedestal, covering the adult butterfly. The egg, caterpillar, and cocoon will be displayed in front of the glass dome on a small stand made of real wood.
Conceptual Intent: The aim of the project is to showcase the growth and different life stages of the butterfly, from the egg to the adult butterfly. By displaying these stages, the project intends to highlight the transformative power of nature and the beauty of this process. Additionally, the project aims to promote awareness and appreciation for the importance of preserving natural habitats and biodiversity, particularly in relation to the butterfly and its role in the ecosystem. The display of the different life stages of the butterfly also serves to educate viewers on the complex and fascinating processes that occur in nature. Through this project, viewers can learn about the importance of conservation efforts to ensure the survival of butterfly populations and their habitats. Overall, the conceptual intent of the project is to inspire awe and wonder in the natural world, while promoting a sense of responsibility towards its preservation. In relation to the Special Collections: Shrines, Alters, and Pedestals assignment, this project creates an altar for the butterfly, emphasizing its beauty and importance in nature. By using real materials and a rustic aesthetic, the project also draws attention to the natural world and the need to protect and appreciate it.
Liminal Spaces and the Body (Performance with the camera)
Materials: phone camera
The use of liminal spaces in this exercise adds an additional layer of meaning and complexity to the exploration of the body and its relationship with the environment. Liminal spaces are those in-between places, where boundaries are blurred and transitions occur. These spaces can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and they often evoke a sense of uncertainty and disorientation. The camera allows for a close-up view of the body's movements and reactions, revealing the nuances of these liminal experiences. Furthermore, the act of recording one's own point of view can also be seen as a form of self-expression and self-discovery. By presenting their perspective to an audience, the performer is sharing a part of themselves and inviting the audience to connect with their unique perspective. This exercise has the potential to create a deeper understanding and empathy between performers and audiences, as well as to challenge societal norms and preconceptions about the body and its relationship to the world.

Title: Immaterial Processes and Elements (Final)
Materials: Ultrabeam laser, small backdrop, clear crystal and mirrored candlesticks
Statement of intent
The intention of my installation art piece was to create an immersive and interactive experience using a small-scale sculpture and ultra-beam green lasers. The sculpture was positioned at the corner of the space, and the lasers were pointed towards it, creating a dazzling and dynamic display of green light reflecting on the mirrored candle sticks. This piece will activate the space using immaterial elements such as light, and performance, the lasers will interact with the sculpture, casting shadows and creating a sense of movement. The performance aspect will come into play as visitors navigate around the sculpture, creating their own unique experience as they move through the laser beams, it also came into play when I needed to alter the movement of lasers. The piece transformed the immediate surroundings, altering the perception of the space as the lasers and sculpture create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The lasers took up the whole space, which also made it an experience without the sculpture.
For pedestals I had an idea of square structures that can be painted white, black or even mirrored. I also had an idea of using a white sheet on a structure to make it clean and organized depending on the work. I also like the idea of using a square or round piece of wood to make small pedestals.
For my idea boards I came up with 3 different ideas of collections.
1. Title: Abandoned. This would be a series that focuses on objects found on the floor. I am really excited about this particular one because it feels exciting not knowing what I will find. Which is another reason why I don’t have any images. I do have ideas of places to go to find objects. Possible places to go could be the beach, parks and shopping malls. I would also like to record my finds by taking an image as is on the floor as well as starting a journal that details my finds( location, date, time)
2. My second idea is untitled at the moment. And I wanted to come up with a creative idea that uses vinyls. I wanted to attempt a hanging installation. To find these vinyls I will have to visit many thrift stores
3. Title: Monsterra. This is a perfect way to interact with the library since the image shown is of an actual book that I have created for my printmaking class. Everyone felt wallpaper vibes when they say by book. So they also gave me great ideas on how this could actually become an installation. It could be displayed on the library wall with Monsterras around it.
