NUMBER OF BLANKETS YOU SLEEP WITH: Literally all of them. I live in a city on the 15th floor, so I can choose between “fantastically hot” and “fucking freezing.” I choose to keep it cold. Which is great from mid October to early April, because I just turn off the air and open the windows for 7 months.

DREAM TRIP: Um...Dublin? Travel is honestly not on my mind right now.

RANDOM FACT: Oh boy. Don’t ask me this. My entire brain is a fountain of True Facts About American History. So, um, here take this one: Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia, started seeing each other while Grant was a student at West Point. They’d been together for a comparatively short time when Julia’s bird died, and she was crushed. Grant somehow convinced her to give him the dead bird. He spent the whole night making a tiny, bird sized coffin and American flag. He then got 8 of his buddies to help him bury the bird at West Point with full military honors for “A lifetime of loyal service to Miss Julia Dent.” So I guess I’m supposed to tag people now, but I’ve taken so long to get around to this that I don’t expect it matters much! So...surprising exactly nobody who knows me, baby DarthVictoriana’s first crush was the Marquis de Lafayette. That crush has been going for at least 14 years and is still alive and healthy. Reylo has really made me reconsider what I consider "empowering" relationships and how those are presented in media. A lot of mainstream romances (unfortunately mainstream tends to mean straight romance) where the woman is "empowered" objectify her and use even her fighting skills or competence as an opportunity to make her attractive to the male MC. Reylo, in canon, is actually incredibly empowering of Rey and doesn't objectify her, but it doesn't compromise sensuality in the dynamic to do it.

That’s an excellent point. Rey’s strength and fighting skills are never on display for Kylo OR for the male gaze. She doesn’t have any of those Black Widow sexy moves that /strong female characters/ usually have in action/adventure movies. She doesn’t fight prettily. Not once Kylo is shown ogling the way she moves during the praetorian guard fight or marveling at how she’s such a good fighter despite her gender. And when she beats him in the starkiller duel, he’s in awe at how quickly she came into her powers, not because “slay me, goddess” (no matter how much we joke about it in fandom). 

It’s really interesting because their fighting scenes (both starkiller and the throne room) are brimming with sensuality and yet the writers managed to stay away from the usual “sexy fight” tropes and convey that sensuality in a way that doesn’t objectify Rey, exactly like you said. Even what’s arguably the sexiest moment, the thigh grab, isn’t choreographed to emphasize Rey’s attractiveness. In another movie and with another director, that scene would have been an opportunity to let Kylo *inappropriately* touch Rey and mimic sexual intercourse, while the way it is, it’s a depiction of raw combined power, and the sexual implications are more symbolical than visually conveyed (and if there’s anyone who’s touching inappropriately the other, it’s Rey, lol).
