A group of active dolphins hangin’ out in Gasparilla Sound on a busy Sunday afternoon. 

This month’s field research trip was quite a busy one, as a large group of dolphins gathered in the bay and remained there for the entire length of the trip! 

We recognized many previously identified individuals as well as several new dolphins!

In the first photo we see P8 “Tsudzukeru” lifting an eye out the water, followed by a pic of P3 “Deak” fluking. Several dolphins grouped together and began engaging in active behaviors. The fifth photo features a new individual, P54, breaching, and the following three photo sequence depicts another new individual, P52, surfing in the wake of a passing boat. Second to last photo shows a playful young P102 (calf of P54) spyhopping, and the last picture (one of my personal favorites) features P3 Deak eyeing my kayak while surfacing!

The spiral should always be built to move in the direction of water drainage in whatever hemisphere it’s located in — for example, in the Northern hemisphere, water runs off in a clockwise direction and the opposite is true for the Southern hemisphere.
