After being killed by Michael, Gabriel is pulled from the Empty into another universe. He meets Roger, who has just finished closing the portal with Emerson. After some convincing, Roger agrees to help Gabriel get back to his own universe.
But Roger has his own problem - the curse hasn’t been lifted. Gabriel offers to help him out, and circumstances lead them on a road trip to Roger’s home.
On the way, Roger and Gabriel grow closer as they learn more about each other - their pasts, their traumas, who they really are - and Gabriel finds it harder to leave, and Roger finds it harder to let him go.
Roger was in the process of digging through his suitcase when there was a knock at his hotel room door. He really just wanted to be alone right now. He was sore, tired, and needed a shower. There was still blood up his nose, his head hurt from being knocked out, and he was feeling…“off.”
“One second,” he finally said. He closed his suitcase and walked into the small living room of his suite. Ugh, hopefully whoever it was had the wrong room and it would be a quick conversation. He unlatched the keychain lock and opened the door. “Can I help—”
His mouth fell open. What. The. Fuck?
Had he been hit on the head harder than he thought?
The doppelgänger—that’s the only word he could think of to describe what he was seeing—tilted its head curiously then smiled. “OK, I know this looks weird, but I’m in a hurry, and I feel like shit, so I’m just gonna lay it all out here: I’m the Archangel Gabriel. In order to walk around Earth with you humans, I have to ask one of you guys if I can possess you. Well, guess what? You—”
At the word “possess” Roger whirled around, dashing for his leather bag that he had set on the table next to the door and flipping it open. He kept one eye on this “Gabriel” while he located something silver to use. It had his hair! His eyes! If Roger shaved, no one would be able to tell them apart! Was it a new kind of demon? His fingers grasped something cold—Emerson’s spoon! He’d neglected to return it!—and whipped it out, turning back towards the door.
“Stay back!” he shouted, brandishing the utensil. “I don’t know how you’re still here, but I’ll use this!”
His mirror-image stared back at him. “Are you on drugs?” It took a step inside the room, ignoring Roger’s hand. It raised a hand to its chin, as if in thought. “Hmm, this might not be—”
Roger lunged forward and pressed the spoon to the back of its hand. The being looked down before grabbing it. “What are you doing?”
“Wh-What are you?” Roger gasped, releasing the spoon.
“I told you, I’m…” The doppelgänger swayed on its feet. “My name is…” It began to fall towards Roger, who caught it in his arms. “Gabriel…”
