As Cal explained what they had to do, Marina watched as the Dauntless borns jumped off the train on to the top of the building. They only had one chance to do jump off the moving train and if they didn’t make it… Then they couldn’t even participate in the actual initiation because they wouldn’t have reached the headquarters. She glanced sideways to where Desmond was and saw that he was looking at her too; she knew he still had feelings for her—one of the things she learnt when he was under the truth serum. Yet, he seemed fine on his own to make it out of the train. Turning her head away from her ex-boyfriend, she faced the door of the train, and watched as Cal leapt out, landing on the rooftop without a flaw. Of course, he did; Dauntless born.
Desmond and the other Erudite transfer followed suit along with the other initiates. There weren’t many people left in the train which meant she and Belle had to jump now or….well, she didn’t have time to linger on the thought. “Together?” She asked, turning to Belle and offering a hand for the other girl to hold. With a simple nod, she reachd for Rina’s hand and the two moved to the back of the train to get a headstart. “Ready?” She asked one last time before the two transfers ran forwards and leapt off the train, just as it went past the edge of the building.
She was either going to make it or not make it; there was no in between. She could feel her heart beating slightly faster as they were in the air but before she knew it, they landed on the ground, at a rather awkward angle, but it wasn’t anything too bad.
As soon as they had landed, Rina and Belle stood up, and ran towards the crowd of initiates, who were standing on the other edge of the building. Amongst the crowd, was an older male who was probably the faction leader. The two transfers made it just in time to the back of the crowd to hear what he was about to say. “If you’ve made it here, well good for you. That’s just the beginning. Dauntless headquarters are down there, and if you haven’t figured it out already, you need to jump down. Now, we need someone to go first. Who’s it gonna be?” He said in a loud, clear voice.
Everyone stood in silence, the transfers not wanting to be the first one, and the Dauntless borns wondering if any of the transfers had the guts to jump first. It was clear that no one was going to do it, but she could. If Marina did jump first and made it down there safely, she would be the first jumper.
Looking around her once more, to see if anyone was going to volunteer, Marina saw that no one was going to. “Me,” she spoke out, “it’s going to be me.”
