I interviewed the Bodyguard.ai team about tech solutions for quickly moderating online toxicity. I was taken by their positivity and genuine desire to help the community with a combination of machine and human analysis. https://www.pcgamesinsider.biz/interviews-and-opinion/73578/we-want-to-become-a-positive-part-of-community-management-bodyguardai-on-tackling-online-toxicity/
I helped plan, market and host Pocket Gamer Connects London 2023. This was the sixth PGC London I’ve attended in person, and it was clearly Steel Media’s biggest ever, with over 2,600 people joining us at The Brewery. https://www.pocketgamer.biz/news/80699/find-out-what-you-missed-at-the-biggest-show-in-pocket-gamer-connects-history/
It was truly international, with half our attendees coming from the UK and representation from six continents. I personally hosted two stages, a panel, and a fireside chat. With over 260 speakers and so many people behind the scenes, there are too many people to thank individually. But please join me in a virtual salute to our participants, panellists, sponsors, stage hosts, staff, volunteers, and everybody involved.
In 2023, we plan to go on the road to Seattle, Toronto, Helsinki and Jordan. Onwards!
I always enjoy writing for magazines and this recent Total Film feature was a chance for me to express my love of crime drama too. I didn’t write the whole feature - it was a huge list for issue 333 - but I contributed copy about my favourite screen detectives.
Can games help the cause of equality and inclusivity? And can that message catch on in the burgeoning MENA region? Sometimes, two hot topics come together at once. The capacity for games to do goo...
An interview with UN Women’s Laith Abu Taleb by Dave Bradley, about gamification, apps and equality in the MENA region.
I’m very proud when I look back at what the Steel Media team has achieved over the last 21 months when we switched from live conferences to virtual events...
We hosted 11 conferences over Zoom since the lockdown began, nine Pocket Gamer Connects events and two Beyond Games events, all from our home desks. It was a huge achievement by the whole team. We took the machinery of an entire trade event and converted it into something people could benefit from remotely. In the conferences we ran entirely online, we’ve welcomed over 12,000 professional delegates in total, who have logged in from over 70 countries. Each event has had over 200 expert speakers. Typically we’ve seen around 700 companies join each week. We’ve had speakers from the biggest firms in the business including at least one Oscar winner. In particular, our conferences have provided a resource for publishers and developers: 70% of digital attendees have been game makers. I’ve hosted dozens of panels and fireside chats and compèred something approaching 100 hours of Zoom tracks.

I shared my insights into my career and my tips on how to prepare yourself for a life as a games journalist, with student writer Ryan Duff.
Our sci-fi and fantasy podcast continues to roll out fortnightly, with a terrific calibre of guest. In September 2021 we welcomed bestselling fantasy author Joe Abercrombie onto the podcast to discuss his new book and also rewatch the 1981 film Excalibur with us. This is a clip of that episode.
We launched a new editorial website to cover the exciting areas of convergence, transmedia, technology and the metaverse! It’s where games meet sport, fashion, music, film, culture and more. Welcome to Beyond Games!
After a year of lockdown, I helped stage a return to live events for PocketGamer.biz in the form of the official Mobile Games Awards 2021. The award ceremony took place live in the Ham Yard Hotel in the centre of London and was attended by about 100 people. There are links to photos, a video recording of the ceremony, and a full list of winners, at the PocketGamer.biz site.
Using Wix, I designed and launched an official website for our podcast, Robby The Robot’s Waiting.
Every year I act as a mentor at Bath Spa University. I spend time each month with a student helping them understand what careers are available to them, looking at the CVs, staging mock job interviews if they need it, introducing them to useful people in the industry if I can. I was lucky at the start of my career to receive insight and support from people and I think it’s important to try and do the same.
This was a fun podcast to record and share. I am one of only five people who have edited SFX magazine in its 25-year history. We all assembled to celebrate the history of the magazine at its quarter century, and the resulting panel conversation became a two-part special of the podcast Robby The Robot’s Waiting.

The best pieces of content are an argument; they build a narrative that leads you down a particular path – it may just be to make you laugh or cry
That Media Thing interviewed me about marketing, events and writing.
In September, I took part as a host and moderator at the latest Pocket Gamer Connects digital event. This one was themed for Helsinki, but took place 100% online. I ran a number of panels - this one was about the convergence of games, film, TV and music. I had spent many weeks helping prepare and promote the week-long event. Future events are planned in the same series:Â https://www.pgconnects.com/next-event
I contributed an article looking back at 1980s role-playing game Maelstrom for SFX print edition 331. https://www.gamesradar.com/sfx/Â
In July 2020 I launched a sci-fi podcast with Richard Edwards and Tanavi Patel from SFX. The first episode of the twice-monthly podcast covered Avengers (with special guest Tara Bennett), Buffy, The Old Guard, Gotham and loads more. https://anchor.fm/robbyscifi
