Ultra Vortek - Console Fighting Games of 1995
Ultra Vortek (1995) is a dark, cyberpunk‑themed 2D fighter developed by Beyond Games for the Atari Jaguar, blending digitized actors, stop‑motion creatures, and early CGI into one of the system’s most ambitious attempts at a Mortal Kombat–style experience. Set in a post‑collapse future ruled by gangs and warlords, the story follows seven warriors summoned by a mysterious being known as the Guardian. Unless one of them can meet his challenge and reopen the Ultra Vortek, the Earth will be destroyed.
Gameplay follows the familiar one‑on‑one format, with a mix of punches, kicks, and a surprisingly large set of special moves for each fighter. The roster’s visual variety — from digitized humans to animated monsters — gives the game a distinct identity among mid‑90s fighters. True to its inspirations, Ultra Vortek includes multiple finishing moves per character, adding to its mature tone and giving players stylish ways to end a match. As one of the Jaguar’s few original fighting games, it stands out as a gritty, experimental entry in the era’s wave of violent, effects‑heavy fighters.
