Centre Periphery — WS at Bozen Design festival

From 16th to 20th September 2014 I've been in Bozen to take part to the Centre Periphery workshop. It was organized by the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bozen, and held by Roosje Klap, Thomas Vailly and the Zurich-based practice Gruppe. The aim of the project was to investigate on the concepts of centre and periphery, and to reconsider the city of Bozen as an island, not only geographically, but socially and culturally too. Firstly all the participants split in three teams, one for each teacher and moved around the city. I worked in the "graphic design" team with Roosje Klap. We chose to work on the idea that everything is an island or more islands depending on how you look at it. After an exchange meeting we decided to combine several statements like "The sea is an island" and relative questions like "Are we looking for an answer?". The materials were printed in silkscreen on posters, t-shirts, shopping bags and flags. Everyday, during the workshop, one of the teachers held a talk. The last one was held by Zack Keys. While the "graphic design" team was working on the identity of the project the other two teams had worked on timber structures in order to make the concept of the island concrete. XY lab — WS in Castrignano de' Greci, Italy

I spent the last two weeks in Castrignano de' Greci participating to the XY lab workshop, organized by FF3300, Pazlab, Inuit and Dinamo Film.

X and Y are two workshops imprinted on new technologies and self-productions, the topics are: "new publishing" and "videomhacking", respectively.

"New publishing" is a research area that push through the processing design, the crisis with the consequent scarcity of resources, self-publishing and digital and analog craft and the awareness of the central role of networks in our existence. The decision to use the English word "publishing" instead of the Italian "editor" is dictated by the fact that the Anglophone word retains a sense inherent the act of publication, the process through which publishing is made. "Videomhacking", a neologism which describe the interaction between hacking, technological innovation and digital storytelling aimed to transform the way we tell stories through the video.

With Graziana Dammacco, I worked on the concept of "new" in the perspective of publishing and post-digital practices. We realized The Crossing Machine, a website that allows you to "cross" together 5 different parameters (instructions, contents, medias, technologies and time) to build a post-digital publishing project. It's like a game, so the process is more important than the result itself. The main aim of the project is to stimulate lateral thinking and to get awareness of limits and possibilities of publishing.

8th Berlin Biennale

On 29th may 2014 I was in Berlin for the opening of the 8th Berlin Biennale, curated by Juan A. Gaitán. The biennial spans four distinct venues in Berlin. Artistic direction by Zak Group.

The 8th Berlin Biennale brings together a range of international artistic positions that explore the intersection between larger historical narratives and individuals’ lives.

Too much water, too little water — WS in Jericho, Palestine

Last December (2013) I took part to an international workshop held in Jericho, Palestine organized by ILAUD (Paolo Ceccarelli and Etra Occhialini). The project involved Palestinian, Japanese and Italian people, and was focused on urban planning. Jericho has a small river (wadi Qelt) but it's dry for years, maybe more. The aim of the workshop was to reconfigure the areas along the river in a perspective of social and cultural appreciation of the city. Our work is going to be considered for the realization of the master plan of Jericho.
