The Unbirthday Special
A guide to that one order on the special’s menu at Hatter’s Tea Shoppe
The Backstory:
When Hatter first switched the family business from selling hats to a tea shoppe he was more than desperate to make money to keep his family afloat. It was kind of hard to get people to come in and come back when all he was selling was coffee and tea. Why go there when they could just do what they always did and make their own at home? So, he went looking for something unique. And he found it!
In Elfhame. He made a deal, and with it came a yearly delivery of a special bled of tea leaves from that realm.
The Plot:
Tea leaves are from Elfhame and when consumed perform a little differently than tea from this world. Hatter, in his efforts to get the business off the ground, started selling this blend. And it worked! It got people in the door, interested in what he was making! Now it remains on the menu for anyone who comes in and wants to order it! Think of it like the house special, the “Unbirthday Special Blend.” This tea is can be ordered at any time, except on your actual birthday.
What does it do?
This blend has an addictive quality to it, but think of it being just like caffeine. It is a stimulant to the body and if your character consumes it on the regular then they’ll have a VERY mild physical dependence. But it absolutely won’t threaten your character’s physical health the way harder drugs would.
It also acts as an emotional stimulant, giving those who consume it a happier demeanor after drinking it. It would make your character’s mood lifted after they drink it. Not to the point where their depression is cured or their whole personality changes drastically by any means, like they aren’t going to drink it and suddenly feel like bursting into song, it just makes them feel a bit happier. As a treat.
Taste: Being from Elfhame, this blend tastes like nothing your character has ever tasted before! (Unless they’ve been to Elfhame, of course.) But it’s very good, in that out of this world sort of way. Different to each character, you can decide for them since, as their mun, you know what they like best.
Smell: Since smell is the majority of people’s taste, the same as above goes here. It doesn’t smell of this world, but very alluring. Again, unique to each character.
Sight: It looks like regular black tea, from the leaves to when it is bathed in boiling water. It takes on that familiar brownish-amber color. Maybe it’s a bit darker than most teas, but not so much that anyone should notice a difference. It just makes it seem richer to the eye.
How do I involve my characters in this plot?: It’s optional and you can go as hard as you want on it! Want your character to have drank this tea every single day since they’ve lived here? Go for it! Only want them to order this tea on the special occasion? Go for it! Want your character to have never touched the stuff? Go for it! You have all the say as to how much or how little your character has consumed or will consume in the future.
