Some production photos from our new science film, “What Is Reality?” Watch the full film here: https://youtu.be/w0ztlIAYTCU
The film was produced by Mad Machine Films for Quantum Gravity Research, a theoretical physics organization based in Los Angeles founded and directed by Klee Irwin. The scientists at QGR are hard at work on a fascinating new quantum gravity theory, or “theory of everything,” based on quasicrystalline mathematics and projective geometry. The film explains the theory, called emergence theory, in layperson’s terms.
“What Is Reality?” stars Marion Kerr. It was directed and edited by David Jakubovic. Tony Ditata was the director of photography. Cartoons were created by Sarah Winters. Daniel Jakubovic wrote the score. Einstein and Heisenberg’s cartoon character voices were performed by Devin Harjes. Rerecording mixer was Patrick Giraudi.

Searching For Pathos at the Holocaust Memorial In Berlin
I search for pathos at the massive, city-square sized art installation that is the holocaust memorial in Berlin. Its nameless, uneven, graveyard-inspired design frustrates the observer seeking a climactic, art-driven resolution to the madness it memorializes: rocks, pathways, silence, monuments without opinions. It is a memorial that cannot memorialize, and that’s perhaps its point. I stare at the deliberately placed rocks and feel nothing. The only word that creeps up in my head is an inane, “cool,” and I feel like a non-being, capable of nothing but empty thoughts. An appreciation of graphic design does not seem to me to be what I should experience here.
I try to feel something meaningful here at Shoahplatz, to connect with some history, ancestors, death, something. To feel sad, angry - something. But the very words “sad” and “angry” unite with some philosophical anti-matter the moment they are conceived and vanish into nothing. I can’t even feel frustrated. I can’t even feel frustrated about not being able to feel frustrated. I don’t even feel numb. I feel nothing. This is a successful memorial. It forces you into feeling nothing, like the ninth bite of a cake. I think about lunch, but not about death.
I believe I have a cultural suppression mechanism built into me when it comes to dealing with the holocaust. To grow up in Israel is to grow up drowning in its memory. One must sometimes cope by draining the pool.
The rocks stand silent and disinterested as kids play hide-and-seek among them, screaming and laughing, unhindered by their parents, too dementedly politically correct to demand that they stop (forgive my intense judgment.) And why should they tell them to stop? Stop and respect the history? These rocks memorialize no history. They just exist. Someone somewhere somewhen decided they now memorialize history. “Hey Berlin - there were once Nazis here, so here are some rocks, they now memorialize death.” These rocks have nothing to say to me about anything at all.
No matter how hard I look, I can find no pathos, no breathlessness, no awe. There is a man in a red coat standing there for a long time, reading something out loud, and it appears meaningful to him. Maybe he is feeling something. Maybe he believes he is feeling something. He too will eat lunch later.
The only moment of meaning for me occurred when a little girl jumped around on the stones (like most other kids and many adults) and a guard came over and yelled at her angrily, trying to teach her a lesson, it appeared to me. In America he would have been fired for chastising her with such intensity. I had a tremendous amount of respect for this man who absolutely cared about this place and about his work as its custodian. The child was not pleased. But a few minutes later, I saw her wandering alone, suddenly introspective, among the rocks, and I hoped that even though I felt so little in this place, maybe she experienced an important moment of growth. That would give the rocks meaning.
It is oddly refreshing to me to see adults chastising kids after living for a few years in a shoddily built New York apartment building under two marathon-running demon twins whose parents never seemed to say a word to them except about how cute they were (often these doting exclamations of love were louder than the marathon running) but I must say - screams in German never sounded so pleasant.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC 9.1 - Problems
Current problems I am experiencing with Adobe Premiere CC. Version: 9.1 (Current)
If you want to add things to this list email me at [email protected] and I will add them. I will post this on Post Chat whenever it is updated. I hope Adobe looks at this and finds it useful.
1. It crashes too often. I have never lost work as often as I do in Premiere. This is a little less insane in the current version than it used to be but it still is over the top.
2. Can’t open multiple projects. Big problem. In Avid, bins are saved as separate files, which means there is no one file that gets huge. In FCP 7 (and below) and in Premiere, the entire project is one file. In FCP, I would avoid projects getting too large by having multiple projects. In a long form projects this is very useful - a project for dailies, a project for the cuts etc. This is not possible with Premiere, and we are therefore stuck with huge files which take too long to save, crash often and possibly have a high risk of corruption.
3. Extend function is awkward and often doesn’t work unless you click a couple of times on the cut. It should not have that directional thing it has - you should be able to click the cut, move the cursor to where you want to extend it, and extend. And you shouldn’t have to command-click it, you should be able to just click it. There should not be several different modes for extending.
4. Cannot program lock-track into the keyboard.
5. Cannot program specific filters/effects into the keyboard. This is a huge annoyance to me personally, especially when there is a filter I use often.
6. The poster frame function does not work well, the poster frames keep changing after they’re set and it goes against the whole point of poster frames.
7. Speed effect - a “fit to fill” option would be very helpful.
8. A sequence should have a codec, and when you put footage of that codec on the sequence it should not have to be rendered. It’s frustrating that nothing is ever rendered, ever, until you render it.
9. Often, rendered audio clips with little dissolves between them (which I put there to make the pop go away) play without hearing those dissolves, so the pop is there. Then I stop and play it again and it isn’t there. Happens very often.
10. Copy-paste doesn’t work well. When I copy footage from a sequence, if I do a bunch of things before pasting it, it does not retain the copy and I can’t paste it.
11. Another copy-paste issue - why does it not paste stuff onto the track it was copied from? That is extremely cumbersome. It makes much more sense to paste onto the track it was copied from. If I have a certain type of sound effect that is recurring and it is on track 5, I want to copy it and paste it back to track 5, I don’t want it overrunning my dialogue that’s on track 1.
12. When matching back to the shot in the bin, it opens the shot in list form in the main project window as well as highlights it in the bin if the bin is open. Very distracting. It should only point to it in the open bin, and if the bin is not open it should open the bin and highlight the shot.
13. The process of “generating peak files” is… not ideal (aka maddening)
14. When you set a view in a bin to sort by name or by user specific, then close the bin and do other things, and open the bin again, it reverts back to a different sorting method and you have to go back to the one you already set it to.
15. When saving a bin metadata display and trying to load it in another bin it loads the metadata but not in the order that I had it in the bin I copied the settings from.
16. Label system isn’t good. We should be able to give folders and clips colors and not have a label show up near the clip or folder. If we give a clip a color - it should show up fully and reliably in that color in any timeline it is in - whether or not the clip has been put in the timeline prior to giving the clip in the bin its color.
17. From “Post Chat” Facebook group Craig Bergonzoni: being able to Sort sequences by Date Modified and Date created would be very useful.
