I will be talking about illustrating the book showing some research and rough sketches and doing a bit of live drawing at St Bride foundation in London on the 28th June, if you around come by and say hello ! The Women’s Freedom League was formed in 1907, Their motto was “Dare to be Free” , they travelled around the country in a horse drawn caravan giving speeches and selling newspapers. They very quickly gained thousands of enthusiastic members. #suffragettethebattleforequality
Giving speeches on Women’s Suffrage was a perilous thing to do! All sorts of missiles where hurled at the suffragettes and suffragists. Anything from rotten fish and bad eggs to stones and dead rats ! But nothing stopped them from spreading the word that women deserved justice and the right to vote ! #suffragettethebattleforequality
I love a badge , it’s such a simple and accessible way of showing you support something. The suffragists and suffragettes knew that and many of the individual suffrage societies made badges in their own coulors and designs. This was the very first picture I painted for the book, it took a whole week, mainly because I can’t spell ! #suffragettethebattleforequality #badges
So excited that Suffragette the Battle for Equality is out today ! I spent a year working on it, but it originated from a school project I did age 14 an alarming 34 years ago! I am so grateful to every one who contributed to making this book, particularly @laurenlaverne for her brilliant introduction and all the lovely folks at @twohootsbooks for saying yes ! This book is dedicated to the memory of all the women and men, suffragists and suffragettes who one hundred years ago and more did right and persisted in the Battle for Equality.
Both the Suffragists and the Suffragettes loved a parade. They would dress up as great women from history, Emily Bronte , Joan of Arc , Queen Boadicea and Elizabeth 1st, representing Wisdom, Strength and Power! Off to the land of Fire and Ice
Today a statue by the artist Gillian Wearing of Millicent Garrett Fawcett was unveiled in parliament square...and about time too! Millicent becomes the first woman to be commemorated in this way and stands surrounded by 11 statues of Men. Millicent was the leader of the National Union of women’s suffrage society’s and campaigned peacefully lobbying and petitioning the government for 61 years to win Votes for women.
