Davina Isobel Wilkes was born in the early morning of one of the hottest days of the summer to Poppy and Hawthorn Wilkes. Poppy was overjoyed with the birth of a daughter, already having their heir and son, and Poppy immediately set about spoiling and molding her daughter into what she wanted, rather than what Davina wanted. Growing up, Davina loved being spoiled, dressing up, and her ballet lessons. Her mother poured everything into nurturing Davina into being a well-bred and well-brought-up Pureblood daughter, and Davina never resisted, enjoying being spoiled and having her mothers undivided attention, especially when her younger brother was born.

Her childhood was rather unremarkable, passing by with Pureblood parties, spending time with her brothers and the other children of Pureblood couples, and etiquette classes. She was taught to speak French and Latin, and her mother insisted that she take ballet and piano lessons. Davina would say that she had a worry free childhood and that she was a happy child.

That all changed when Davina and her brothers were sat down at the dining room table in late August by their parents and told that their fortune was gone. The tension between her parents had been palpable for months, and Davina didn't think that she would ever forget the look of loathing on her mother's face and the shame in her father's words. Hawthorn Wilkes had always been a prideful man and having to tell his children that the money was gone changed him. Her brother's inheritances were gone, and any money that Davina would have for a marriage was gone too.  He had many excuses for what had happened, blaming a muggleborn for the bad dealings, but Davina secretly thought that he just didn't want to admit what had truly happened.

Going to Hogwarts should have been her happiest moment, but armed with the knowledge that she was broke, but expected to keep up appearances that nothing would change made her time at Hogwarts difficult. She was sorted into Slytherin, as was expected, but Davina never felt completely comfortable among her peers. Constant worry about keeping up with the others, about someone finding out the truth took its toll and sometimes it seemed like Davina was trying too hard. She got very good at charming her clothes so it never looked like she was wearing the same things, and she started to dabble in fashion designing as a way to hide that she didn’t have the money to buy new gowns from Paris or Italy like some of the other girls.

After Hogwarts, Davina settled into the role of a socialite. It was surprisingly easy to lie about vacations and trips that she had taken in an attempt to keep up with the others. Keeping up appearances was even more important as she and Poppy dedicated themselves to finding the perfect match for Davina. Preferably a man with lots of money, a good name, and is handsome to boot, but Davina knows that she can’t be particularly choosy.

There were a lot of things that Beck wish he could take back from his idiotic youth and at the time, traveling throughout countries seemed like a great idea to avoid a marriage waiting for him back in England, but he never considered the feelings behind the very real person. It was clear that those causes had effects and he wondered how long he had before an apology expired. "Great, that's great. I'm glad," he said, wondering how much truth his words weighed. "I'm also doing...great." Beck was usually not a man who was made nervous by a few words, but he found himself with shortcomings. "I'm sorry about...everything. And not...apologizing about it until now."

I'm sorry. About everything. For a moment, Davina felt like she was in some sort of weird dream. Hadn't she wanted Beck to apologize for what he had done? What he had put her through? Would that have made it easier for her to stomach the way that things had ended? She wasn't entirely sure. And she wasn't entirely sure she even wanted an apology from him. "Oh," Davina finally said after what had felt like forever/ "I didn't expect an apology from you. You hurt me, Beck. It was awful. You made me think..." she trailed off, not wanting to finish her sentence. "I appreciate your apology. Even if it's about two years late." She paused. "I guess I could have handled things...differently." She didn't really think that, but it was probably the proper thing to say.

Sethos had a long-standing obsession with brooms, partly from his days as a Quidditch player, but mostly because he found something endlessly fascinating in their craftsmanship and the history woven into each handle and bristle. Whenever he had a spare moment, he wandered into secondhand shops, always on the lookout for hidden gems.

Today was no different. His fingers stretched out toward a vintage broom, just as someone else reached for it, their hands nearly brushing. “It seems we both have excellent taste,” he said with a wry smile, turning to see who had beaten him to it by a second.

Davina didn't frequent any of the Quidditch shops in Diagon Alley very often, but when it came to her brother's birthday, she could make an exception. She wasn't entirely sure what she was going to find for him, but she was running out of time, and she was starting to grow desperate, so Quidditch gear seemed like a good idea.

Walking through the doors, she spotted a broom that looked older than her brother, but perhaps it would be decently priced, she had thought. Davina hadn't noticed Sethos standing there, and she let out a laugh. "Oh," she greeted. "I know that I do. It's kind of you to notice," she teased.

Davina hated weddings. They were a painful reminder that she was still waiting. Always the wedding guest, never the bride. Her mother reminded her that she was young, but it was just so difficult knowing her family's situation and how marriage could help them. But she had long learned to smile and bear it, to not let anyone know her true feelings. Deep down, she knew that it was no one's fault, and she couldn't fault the bride and groom for their luck. So she congratulated the newlyweds, smiled, and danced the night away in hopes that her luck would change. But sometimes she needed a minute to herself, and that was when she ran into him. Beck. It was like the universe thought that her life was one big joke. "Beck," she greeted, her voice cold. "Walking away, how typical." It probably wasn't fair, it had been years, but the sting of his rejection, of what her life could have been like, was still fresh, especially with the champagne and the sting of the wedding.

That was the last voice he expected to hear and he felt himself slowly turn to face her. Though not impossible, he was still surprised Davina. There were a few regrets that weighed Beck down over the years and it was how he dealt with his arranged engagement to the point he lost it. He didn't even know if it was before or after the death of his mother or the arrest of his dad, but he only remembered one day it no longer needed to be upheld and he never questioned it. Her words cut through him. Deservingly, he thought and pocketed his hands. "That's fair," he sighed out, frowning. "How are you? How long has it been?"

And yet the sting of rejection and of not feeling like she was good enough still felt as fresh as it had when they broke the betrothal. Maybe it wouldn't have felt so painful if she were married now. Or if they had actually had a conversation about what had happened. But they hadn't. And now wasn't the time to do that. "I'm good. Great, really. It was a beautiful wedding, I'm sure the happy couple is going to have a long and happy life together, don't you?" Davina asked. At the question of how long had it been, she shrugged. "I lost count." Davina paused. "And you? How are you doing?"

It was hard times surrounding the event, but he was happy that people could still hold onto moments of hope like tonight. It was a bitter pill to swallow. Ignoring it felt messier, though. Beck found a quiet corner outside, the rim of his glass damp in his hand, the number of refills a hazy blur. "Well when you put it that way, I don't mind the company," Davina replied, gesturing to the open seat. She glanced at Serra from across the table. "I'm sorry I missed your birthday. I was in Paris," Davina lied. She hadn't attended because it was gauche to attend a party without a gift. "I hope that it was everything that you could have wanted. I would love to hear all the gossip, though, so sit and tell me everything."

Davina Wilkes. A woman that she had come across a lot during the parties they had both attended when 'socialite' had been their job description. Cressida knew that what she was about to do, was a risky one but one day she would have to face the people from her previous life. And where Lucius and Narcissa - or her parents - were still a bridge too far, she deemed Davina rather 'innocent' to start with.

So the blonde had made her way over to the other woman at the table. "I wasn't planning on joining you at the table. I'm here to pick up an order," she explained, raising the bag with the contents of her order. "I just saw you sitting here and I wondered how you've been. It's been... a while, you could say." And all because of her doing, but it wasn't time to emphasize that at the moment.

Cressida Malfoy. Or well...McLaggen now, she supposed. What was it like to have everything you could ever want and to just...throw it all away? For love? Please. Davina didn't need love. What she needed was a Gringotts vault overflowing with galleons. It would happen. She was quite sure of it. But she was getting rather impatient.

"Oh, Cressida. It's lovely to see you again," Davina replied. "It's been a very long time, hasn't it? How has married life been?" Was it worth it? Was it easier to walk away from all of it when you had everything that you could ever want? Davina was curious, even if her mother would probably not approve of her talking to Cressida, all things considered. But her mother wasn't here.

Sybill didn't know the woman who was sitting next to her but she didn't need to. In that moment, it was the only comfort she had and Sybill knew too well to push it away. "Oh, I would never cry over cheap vodka. That's usually the best. Tastes worse, does the trick though, and not breaking any pockets," she said through a sniffle and gave a half-mooned smile. "Who am I to give advice on how to order a drink? You should choose your own adventure, though if you do order another, I might join you."

It was truly tragic that Davina preferred expensive alcohol, but had to settle for the cheap stuff more often than not. It wasn't fair, but she had long gotten used to it. "I suppose if you are in the mood to get drunk, it's best to do it with the cheap stuff. I try to avoid it, it just makes me feel sick. It's truly a shame that they don't have higher standards here and start keeping some of the more expensive stuff," she sighed. Davina glanced at the other woman and then at the expectant bartender. "I'll have a martini."

Pandora glanced up at Davina as she settled into the seat across from her, brushing a stray curl behind her ear. “Hope I’m not intruding,” she said softly, her voice warm but unsure. She watched her friend for a beat, sensing that something was off, even if she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was. “You looked a little lost in thought,” she said gently. “Everything alright?” There was no pressure in her tone, just an open door. She leaned back slightly, her hands wrapping around her cup. “We don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to. Just figured… maybe you’d like the company.”

Davina's face instantly softened when she realized that it was Pandora that had approached her. She shifted in her chair and shook her head. "You? Intrude? You could never," Davina replied. She gestured to the open seat and was glad when she sat down. "Oh, just thinking is all," Davina paused. If there was ever anyone that she could talk openly with, it was Pandora. But in public? Davina didn't trust that the wrong person was listening. "I would love the company. It's nothing major, just my mother getting on my nerves," Davina rolled her eyes. "What else is new, right?"

“If I must.” Frank repeated gravely, but his lips were twitching. He knew where Davina’s loyalties lay but he had a hard time convincing himself to hate her like the others. Maybe it was because they knew each other as kids. Maybe potential fatherhood was making him grow soft. But she wasn’t a horrible person. Frank believed this. “I promise I won’t be overstay my welcome.”

Frank Longbottom. There had been a time when she would have considered him a friend, but that time had long passed. What would her mother say if she saw them together? Davina pursed her lips for a moment, before she gestured vaguely to the other chair. "Fine, so long as you don't overstay," Davina agreed. "I guess you could say that I am feeling benevolent today." She hadn't seen him in some time, and perhaps she was a little curious about how his life had shaped up since they had last spoken. But she wasn't going to be the one to start that conversation.

"Surely I'm not that horrible for company." Clyde said as he sat down at the table. He didn't keep up well with society news, that had been his mother's hobby, but he knew Davina Wilkes ran in the right circles. She was older than Beck (not terribly hard) but younger than Clyde (definitely not hard) and she could keep up with conversation. That was the extent of what immediately came to mind. "Have you ordered already, or shall I flag myself a waiter?"

"Oh! Clyde, please, sit," Davina gestured to the open seat, momentarily cursing herself for not looking up before she opened her mouth. She would need to be more aware of her surroundings. "My apologies, I thought you were someone else. I have this blasted admirer who seems to show up when I'm least expecting it. He's harmless, of course, but a bit of a bore," she rolled her eyes. At his question, she shook her head. "I have not. I've been waiting for ages, I didn't realize how busy they would be today."

Lunch dates were hardly Bellatrix's style. But with the war raging ever more ferociously, she deserved a short hiatus from all the doom and gloom. The problem was, it followed her - and she was more than willing to embrace it, with all the control of a witch whose conscience was riotously askew. Spotting Davina's familiar figure across the room, she approached and was ready to apologise for being late. The accursed Ministry had her completing all kinds of forms, these days. As if it wasn't enough that Aurors might try to kill her, she'd probably have to do the paperwork for the privilege, too. The sacrifices she made for the cause. It would all be worth it in the end.

Halting beside Davina, she bent down to press an air kiss to the blonde's cheek, her own ebony hair falling across her shoulders like a weighted shroud. "Hello, my dear." Remaining as she was, poised over the table, she turned slowly to face their unwelcome guest and leant upon a palm placed against the surface. Her stare could melt steel, such was her impatient hostility. "You can leave, now."

Silence, their eyes flickering and her chest heaving. Then the wizard did indeed depart. She sat, chuckling wryly and reaching forward to pick at a few olives on the table between them.

"Sorry I'm late, Davina. Couldn't get out of that hell hole." Looking up, her lips cruelly curved and she turned, gesturing for someone to take their order. "No matter, though. It'll be ours soon."

Davina might not have the funds to support the lavish lifestyle that she always dreamed of, but in some ways, she had something much more important- connections to several important Pureblood families. It wasn't enough, of course, but it was something, and she hoped that eventually those connections would pay off. Her mother encouraged her to be as charming and sociable as possible- after all you never knew when the right person would walk in and sweep her off her feet.

Having lunch with Bellatrix Lestrange was more than just a chance to be sociable, though. Davina had idolized Bellatrix for as long as she could remember. She was strong and powerful, fierce and unrelenting. Of course, Davina had been raised to be nothing of the sort; she was supposed to be prim and proper, but a part of her thought that she could be a bit more like Bellatrix when the time came.

It was almost a relief, though, when Bellatrix arrived just in time to scare off the loser wizard. "Hello, darling, I'm glad that you showed up when you did." Davina shook her head. "No need to apologize, I can't imagine what you're dealing with. I don't know how you do it."

"Oh sh--" Florence trailed off, the curse in her head rather than out loud as she blew a loose strand of hair back off her face. She plopped her shopping bags down on the low wall in front of her, her hands on her hips as she stared at them accusingly. She was sure she had only been to three shops - four at most, but somehow she seemed to have more overflowing shopping bags than she could carry. The plant didn't help but it looked like it needed love and she couldn't quite resist.

She scanned the bags and boxes, wondering how on earth she was going to carry them back home when she took a step backwards to better survey her options, right onto someone's foot. She whipped around, an apologetic smile instantly on her lips. "Oh, I'm sorry! These heels could break your toe, are you alright?" she asked, hands to her chest.

Davina didn't know why she did it to herself sometimes. Going to the shops was often a painful reminder of what she couldn't have. What she couldn't afford. It was truly infuriating, the way that her father had ruined it all, putting his trust into the wrong person. She wasn't sure she could ever truly forgive him. Her mother certainly hadn't. She should be able to buy whatever she wanted without worrying about the state of her Gringotts vault, but alas, that wasn't the case. Davina was certain that her fortune would change soon, though. It had to.

She didn't notice Florence at first, behind all of the bags and boxes, and was that a plant? Davina barely managed to step out of her way, just barely missing her stomping on her toe. "Oh, I think you just stepped on a rock," Davina replied. "I see that you've done a bit of damage to your vault, hm? I always have our house elves come get my bags. I hate carrying them around with me, it's so tiresome, don't you think?" Davina paused. "I suppose I can help if you need it?"

Sybill was sitting in her usual spot that she liked, nursing a cocktail that she didn't have the guts to say how horrible it was because it was half of her own fault when she chose tequila. That was never a good option for anyone. But at least it would be strong enough for her to forget what some students said during her first year of teaching. Sybill saw some student assessments already. The results made her hide in the girls' bathroom and cry in a stall, only to be ridiculed by Moaning Myrtle herself. This was a new low. Them being out of something to make her favorite cocktail and instead she chose something different. This was not going well. She just moved for this job, she couldn't go back to living with a roommate. And now, with a new cat depending on her, everything felt even more precarious. Suddenly, someone slid into the chair beside her, reaching for a menu. "I wouldn't do that if I were you. They're out of vodka, so you might end up with something…awful—" her words were broken as her eyes started to well with tears.

It wasn't often that Davina found herself in Hogsmeade, and especially not in the Three Broomsticks. The pub was popular, sure, but it was so...Hogwarts coded that Davina didn't go there of her own volition. She remembered too many dates that never went anywhere, drama amongst her friend group, and sneaking terrible drinks. But someone on her charity committee had insisted that she just had to have the Cornish pasty, so Davina had eventually agreed. She arrived earlier than necessary, though, because if she was going to have to deal with this place, she needed to have a drink first. Pushing open the door to the pub, she stopped for a moment in the doorway. It was incredible, the way that some things literally never changed. Some might say it was charming, she supposed, but Davina wasn't one of those people. She was about to take her seat when the woman next to her started to speak to her and then started...crying? "There, there, darling. There's no use in crying over cheap vodka," Davina said, trying to be helpful. "I'll just order something without it, no big deal."

"Hm?" Davina glanced up from the magazine she was perusing. It never got easier, looking at fashion magazines with the knowledge that she couldn't buy things the way that the other socialites could. But she certainly had gotten good at mimicking their designs so it appeared that she was just like them. After all, appearances were more important in her mind than actually affording them. At least that was what she told herself when she felt particularly low. And lately, that feeling seemed to follow her everywhere she went. But her mother kept telling her it wouldn't last forever, and she was trying to believe her.. "Oh, are all the other tables full? I suppose you can join me then. If you must."
