I smell fire when you step behind me.
Official Trailer of Wes Anderson’s “ISLE OF DOGS” new animated feature film.
This looks whimsical and adorable.

His contemplation is cut short, it seems, by a voice breaking the relative silence. A voice that rings out just barely familiar, and that addresses him by name. He stills, and turns, wondering who could be talking to him here. The guards are not within earshot, and most villagers don’t tend to talk to him here, out of fear or respect, Kisame’s never been sure.
He doesn’t recognize the man before him. Blazing red hair already turning grey, despite how young he looks. He’s going to ask who the stranger is, but then he sees the eyes. And suddenly he just knows.
Naruto had once told him that Pein was a puppet, a body being controlled by the mind of another who gave up his life during the attack on Konoha, ending the conflict. They had the same eyes, because they were the same person exerting control over all the six paths at once. Naruto never gave a name… but Kisame realizes that this is the man behind the multi-pierced mask.
“Boss?” The word feels wrong after all this time, and Kisame almost regrets saying it. Pein had died before he’d left, and at the time, Kisame had been reconsidering his loyalties between him and the so-called Madara. Now, it seems, he has a chance to talk to his previous leader once more.
“I, uh, guess I shouldn’t be calling you that anymore, should I? Then again, I didn’t think I’d be calling you anything, you’ve been quite dead.”
Nagato smile widens at being identified so quickly and it deepens the lines in his face. Most of the time this is a conscious effort, as Pain hadn’t needed expressions to conduct his work and the man behind him had forgotten them as well. That isn’t what he wants for the people of Amegakure, there are enough gods carved with permanent smiles, or frowns, or serenity. Unchanging, unmoving, uncaring. Statues that remain the same always regardless of the horrors around them. So Nagato tries his best to appear as a person, a man capable of feeling and changing.
Sometimes he forgets.
Though he is genuinely happy to see Kisame. “My name is Nagato.” His voice is raspy, just audible above the rain. “But you may call me whatever makes you most comfortable.”
“I have been.” He agrees, mildly. “I will be again.” The last response is a statement of fact, offered with no emotion behind it.
“However, I am more interested in how you are doing. We can sit and talk a while... if you like.” An offer, not an order.

Masashi Kishimoto is one of my favorite artists. His design for Amegakure in Naruto is one of my favorite settings in fiction. Here is a tribute drawing to all of these favorite things, +one of my favorite characters of all time, Nagato/Pain. :D
I heard it was Nagato’s birthday have a scrappy rough sketch of the rain ot3 in an AU where nothing hurts and everyones still alive. Ft. enthusiastic pda Yahiko, Konan being stronger than both of the boys combined, and Nagato letting them dote after him all day
It’s my son’s birthday how could I not draw him and his best friends.
Fun fact: this is actually a cheesy stock photo image
Sadly this is very rushed maybe next year I can draw something better.
9/19 happy birthday nagato
tonight you’re a stranger or some silhouette

Jiraiya has always liked this quiet town on the border of the Country of Fire and the country of the Grass. The local cafe cooked delicious dango and served flavored tea. He just wanted to go there when he suddenly felt the familiar chakra. Jiraiya opened his eyes wide, not believing his feelings. It could not be. He looked back and saw someone whom he no longer expected to see.
These eyes, he could not forget, even if he really wanted to. But this time there was no cold steel in them, they were incredulous in surprise. Nagato could be understood, he was quite sure that he had killed him. Just like Jiraiya was sure that Nagato sacrificed himself to return those he killed in Konoha.
The left hand unpleasantly tingled, as it always did in bad weather. The events of that day often return to him nightmares, not allowing to forget. But Jiraiya didn’t want to forget. He made the right choice, unlike his former student.
Jiraiya turned away. No matter how Nagato managed to survive. They had nothing to talk about. Everything was said in that day.
There was so much he wanted to ask his old teacher, and nothing he had the right to say. Despite this fact there were things that needed to be said. Isn’t surprised to see him turn away, finds it more encouraging than an immediate attack at the very least, the barest hint of a sigh passes his lips.
“I’m not here to fight.” he starts, back against a tree to keep himself upright, he’d assumed his usual cane would frighten the man. So he’d flown nearby and waited for Jiraiya to settle before approaching him.
“I am... here to apologize.” It’s the beginning of fall and a soft wind sends gold leaves fluttering down around them. “I do not expect your forgiveness.”
There’s a long pause without reply, a slow blink, a heavy breath. “If you prefer me to go you only have to say it. I won’t intrude on you again.”

Despite everything, Amegakure looked exactly the same as it had over a year ago. Kisame had not returned to the country, or to its hidden village, since he’d left the Akatsuki for good, and he never thought he’d step foot in it again.
So, when Kakashi requested he come with him on a diplomatic visit, he was surprised, to say the least. The Hokage told others that it was for political reasons that he was to come, but in secret, he’d been told that the man knew he would get lost in Ame, and needed a guide that knew the place well. Kisame had laughed, agreed, and they’d headed out the next day.
Now in the city of skyscrapers, Kisame traversed the city, having met with some officials and given the rest of the day to roam… under direct watch of his usual Anbu team. They followed and chatted among themselves, asking him questions and pointing out various neon lights and paper lanterns that managed to stay dry despite the constant rain, (the remnants of Konan’s powers, still strong after all this time). So it’s when Kisame finally stopped in his stroll that the Anbu knew to give him space. He knew this place, he’d only stop for something important– or something he didn’t recognize, in this case.
Kisame stared up at the great mural with a curious gaze. The angelic symbols were clearly Konan’s doing, yet the mural, and the memorials right by it, were new to him. Here, even, was covered by a great stone roof, keeping the Memorial area dry. There were hordes of people here, all silently contemplating the imagery, or saying respects, walking quietly, speaking quietly… This was a final resting place, a place of remembrance. The Anbu stayed to the edge of the crowds, watching from a distance, as Kisame approached the mural, stepping out of the rain as he looked back on the two people that had been his leaders, and how they’d changed this land for the better.
The rain is ever present, and while he had been expecting the Rokudaime Hokage, had been in contact with Konoha after the war, he had not expected Kisame to be with him. It’s a pleasant surprise and sensing his chakra in the rain makes his thin lips crack into a smile despite how they last parted ways.
So the ex-Akatsuki leader keeps track of his old comrade’s trek through the city and tries to think of what to say. Nagato had trusted Kisame a great deal and would trust him again, if given the chance. First should come introductions as the swordsman had never actually seen him before.
Nagato isn’t sure how to feel about Kisame visiting the mural. He should have guessed, it’s one of the grander places in the village and would be new to him besides. Though his red hair can be striking he is otherwise indiscernible from any others visiting the murals, praying or meditating. He comes here often enough that the villagers are accustomed to seeing him, give him enough space to be respectful but not a wide enough berth to seem suspicious. A long moment of silence passes before he tries to speak.
“Ah-” His throat catches, he clears it. Raises a pale hand in greeting. “Hello Kisame.”
