The door chimed as Dawn nudged it open with her shoulder, a paper bag tucked under one arm and two iced teas wobbling in her hands. “Emergency lunch delivery,” she announced as she entered the bookshop. “Or, I guess it’s not an emergency, but it’s a lunch delivery regardless.” 

She peeked her head around the corner of the nearest bookshelf, scanning the space until her eyes landed on Spencer. “I got sandwiches and iced tea.” She offered him with a bright smile, holding up the drinks as proof of actual purchase. The store had been unusually quiet today, probably because everyone was off escaping the heat or going away for the summer instead of browsing for beach reads. 

“Also,” she set the drinks and food down on the counter, brushing a stray hair away from her face. “What do  you think about setting up a beach-like window display for the summer? For fourth, obviously we need flags, but like, I think we could do something fun with the window. People loved the pride display!”

five minutes just because they're close by anyway. that's finley's excuse for dragging her friends into the bookstore every opportunity she gets. it's never actually five minutes — but after a few times, it's not really her fault if you believe her, now is it? "okay, ground rule." as if she's not the one dragging them in. "if it's got one of those canva corporate art style covers or a sticker that says anything about tiktok on it, i don't even want to look at it." yeah, yeah, never judge a book by it's cover, or whatever first grade teachers say. she stopped abiding by that rule the second time she got blindsided by someone's thinly veiled m rated fanfiction. fin's no prude, but you have to draw a line somewhere. "adaptation covers are fine as long as they're cool." scans the nearest table for a good example, bypassing a handful of celebrity faced covers before grabbing a copy of the lightning thief with a disney show cover. good enough. "example of cool. if i didn't still have the copy i read five times in the fifth grade." of course she read the percy jackson books multiple times as a kid. that tracks.

Dawn had been restocking the fantasy section when she caught snippets of the conversation drifting over from the front tables. Something about covers and TikTok stickers. Honestly, she got it. Working here had definitely made her more judgmental about book aesthetics than she'd ever admit to anyone. She spent an ungodly amount of time worrying about book cover aesthetics, especially now that she was doing social media posts for the book store.

“Sorry… If you’re looking for pretty covers,” Dawn found herself saying, drifting closer with an armful of books she had accidentally tipped over for the second time that day when adjusting their display, “you should check out some of the editions we have over there.” She gestured towards a section near the windows where the afternoon light hit the spines just right. “There are some really stunning hardcovers with foil detailing that photograph like a dream, and some paperbacks with cover art that’s basically fine art.” She paused, realising she might be intruding, but her enthusiasm for the store's inventory was already bubbling over. "Sorry, I just…  I couldn’t help but overhear… I work here, I’m not just- you know what, that’s not important.” She smiled sheepishly. “I- uh, they’re over there.” She waved her hand towards where the books were once more.

Background

Grew up in an upper-middle class family in Seoul. She is the middle child of three siblings and the only daughter.

She was the daughter who did everything right on the surface; smart, well behaved, and got into an American college. Her parents were excited for her, until they realised she planned on staying in New York after graduation. That's when things started going downhill.

She graduated near top of her class in Fashion and Marketing, and worked for small start up companies until one of her campaigns took off and went viral. That's when the big magazines took notice of her and invited her to join the team.

She worked closely with her boss on campaigns. They started an affair, but had to hide it since he was already married. She hated how cliché it was, but there was a part of her that wanted to be wanted by someone powerful. The thrill, the praise, and illusion of something real was definitely easier than the loneliness. Every time she worked up the courage to end things, he'd draw her back in with "business trips" or gifts she couldn't quite bring herself to refuse.

It all crumbled when his secretary and wife caught them in his office. Dawn was fired, he was given a warning. It was humiliating. She lost her job, her safetynet, and everything she had worked so hard for since coming to the states. He got a slap on the wrist and a promotion three months later.

Honestly, part of her is furious at him, and feels extremely guilty about it all. Not for the company, but for the wife. She definitely learned her lesson.

The scandal spread, and unfortunately for Dawn, it reached her parents who cut her off for putting shame to the family. On top of that all her connections in New York had either moved away, or were not speaking to her anymore due to the scandal.

She drifted for a while, tearfully parting with her high-end fashion items in order to make rent, until she managed to find another job, in Texas, of all places. She moved to Blackstone Ridge one and a half years ago.

Now, she lives in a small apartment in Downtown Blackstone Ridge, while working as a clerk and social media manager for Blackstone books. She genuinely enjoys it more than she htought she would.

Personality

Dawn has always been a bubbly person. She's an expert at hiding her bad days behind a bright smile and a cheerful "hello!".

She's clumsy, but does her best to fix her mistakes when she makes them, apologising profusely while doing so.

She still has traces of having lived an upper-class lifestyle in New York, having completely forgotten about the every day struggles like water heaters breaking, and the actual prices of groceries (which definitely made her cry the first few times she went shopping). She's used to blowing thousands on a single pair of boots, but now has to decide if she'd rather have air conditioning or eggs next week.

She's a little clueless when it comes to practical things and often asks offbeat questions, but they always come from a place of genuine curiosity, not ignorance.

Dawn came to Blackstone Ridge just over a year ago after her career, and honestly her entire world, imploded. She had been working in New York City for a fashion magazine as an editor and digital strategist, living a fast, curated life filled with expensive coffee and boots that cost more than the average person's rent. After an affair with her married boss became public, she was fired and pretty much ghosted by the industry, and due to the shame she brought them, cut off by her parents.  Blackstone was kind of random. While going through a difficult time when she had to part with her high-end fashion items to make rent, she happened to stumble across a few job listings. The further away from New York, the better. She applied to a few, scattered all over the country, and ended up getting the one at Blackstone books. When they called her back, she said yes immediately. She wasn’t meant to stay this long, not really sure if Texas was her kind of vibe. However, 1.5 years down the line she’s still there, still thriving, and making Spencer, her new boss, do stupid things for social media marketing. 

What is the coolest place your muse has traveled to? If they’ve never traveled far, what’s one place they hope to visit someday?

Dawn has been to some pretty amazing places for work; Paris, Milan, Tokyo, etc. Pretty much every fashion hub, she’s been there. But none of them felt particularly “cool” at the time. They were just work trips: red-eye flights, stylists running late, tight schedules, and late-night emails from hotel rooms. Essentially, beautiful and fun places seen through the lens of performance and pressure.  The coolest trip she ever took was almost an accident, a 3 day solo-trip to a quiet resort in the Bahamas after a client had to cancel last minute and her weekend had cleared unexpectedly. She loved it. She got slightly sunburned, but spent the days reading, and sketching, and just existing for a bit without the pressure of having to perform all the time.

Describe your muse’s highest high or lowest low so far in their life.

Her highest high was the time she created her first viral campaign, which ended up in her getting picked up by a high grossing fashion magazine in New York. It came with perks like being on a guest panel at a major industry events, which felt like proof that she belonged in the fashion world.  Her lowest low was when the dust had settled around the scandal. She was sitting in a café she couldn’t really afford to go to any more, realising that she didn’t have a job, she had no savings because of the expensive lifestyle she was living, and all her industry friends had turned their back on her, which essentially meant she was all alone in the big city.
