The room was dim, lit only by the lamp sitting on Jessica's desk, and the kitchen's glow seeping from the open space.
She was working on the pages with a mild pressure bothering her head, having looked so long, she was sure imprints of text were starting to stay on her mind.
The sounds of paper echo in the room, and along with that, you had just finished dinner's leftover with a squeak of the sink tap closing.
Once you walk in the room drying your hands, you saw her; leaned back in her chair, staring and contemplating between the tiny inked sentences, and the three voicemails she had on the corded telephone.
Thank god it was left on silent.
You didn't even think. Didn't even take mind to ask, being too tired from the day. Maybe it was the dish washing. Focus and stuff, all irrevelant--and you end up walking over only to find yourself plopping and easing into her lap.
A slow sigh left you. Her eyebrows were raised, arms staying by the sides of the chair, slightly open and in surprise. She had time to act, if she wanted. "Hey--"
But when she only saw you clinging on with a slumped weight, a held breath made its way out her lips.
"...Don't hog my space," she mumbled, but moved closer to the desk to see the files more, now that you were present in her vision.
A little blockage.
A little too close.
It was just your cheek pressed against her for a second. Though then, you spoke. "...You wouldn't push me off." You only turn to bury off into the crook of her neck. It was the warm, favored space you always picked. And such a quiet voice, she might've just softened, only a little.
Jessica made a gentle shrug at that, lips slightly downturned in expression.
"Well. Not yet," she casually said.
It was too comfortable to move really. But you leaned back to at least look at her.
"...Okay." You pause, thinking. "Then I'll ask." With the words that leaves you, she searches your eyes, hers half lidded and green by the irises. The brown surrounding the pupil was still noticeable, even in this lighting.
"Mind me staying here?"
The question lingers in the air. She stares at you like she was really deciding, for a long moment.
A small, light sigh escapes. Even the sound didn't know if it wanted to be the tone of disbelief, fondness, 'too tired to deal with this', or all the above. "Why not, its not like I'll move anyway..." she ended up saying.
It was quiet for just another minute.
A little while more.
Sounds of her moving things, breathing.
Her heartbeat near yours, and the nuzzle of your nose by her neck.
She tried to not let it distract her, and maybe it did help to relieve a little of the stress going in the hours.
"'Mn sleepy..." you eventually mumbled out. The volume was barely there, and muffled against her shirt and her skin.
She had an urge to say something. Like; 'okay I know I'm strong and all, but I'm not gonna use my energy lifting you off to bed.' but she didn't.
The half joke, half poke in her mind seemed almost a little too harsh once she leans back, seeing the way you were nestled up against her neck.
"Yeah, well..." Her hand rubs her eye lightly. But she let it go into a melting expression of affection. "Try not to get used to doing this."
But she stares at you a while longer.
"I'm gonna wake you if I need you off me though. Don't expect me to lift you."
You couldn't resist the tug on your lips, tightening your arms around her.
And she didn't mind.
Even if her arms reached around you, it was a secure hold.
Occasionally, one would rest at your back, fingers spread out. Her thumb moves simply, up and down in a continous, slow motion.
You breathed softer, and slower, and the heaviness in your eyelids told everything.
It was soothing.
Nothing could really stop you from starting to drift off at the safety, and the oncoming pull of rest.
Her focus on the work almost pauses as she notices, and both her hands were gentle on you now. One lightly threaded through your hair.
Her cheek rested against your head in the meanwhile.
She was tired too.
"...Just rest."
And this was a moment for her to ease the weight of everything herself too.

βOh, my darling dear, how could I ever not adore you?β
A light hum sounds through the space, as the plane slowly moved in the sky. Clouds passed by, and some were a white mist meeting the windows.
You felt the cool AC above, prickling your skin enough to raise goosebumps.
It was a calm ride nonetheless. The seats were comfy.
It was Taylor's private jet, holding the both of you for a journey off to a show she'll be doing. You were coming along because she wanted to spend some time together, and there were plans of exploring the city after she finished.
The meal in front of you was simpleβa mac and cheese warm enough to help from the cold.
Beside you, the seat where Taylor resides is empty. She had presumably gone off to the bathroom, though it was taking her time enough to make you worry about the untouched food.
Perhaps she simply had a call.
Though, then, you see her, blonde hair and a sliver of her presence in the corner of your eye. "Baby--" And when you turn, there was a greeting of her wearing a robe.
Not only a robe--a robe full of kittens. Of variations of kittens without a space left behind. For a moment, you blinked, but the small laugh that came was followed by a need to pause what you were doing, stumbling into a fit of held giggles.
She looked adorable. The hood draped over her hair a little bit, and the sleeves were just a bit too long for her.
"Tay!" you managed to say, leaning back and slumping down your seat. She tries to maintain composure, holding back a smile.
"What??" the blonde looked down, knowing the outfit she was wearing. "You don't like it?"
She starts to join in on the giggles. Thank goodness the jet was gliding rather than finding turbulance just for the moment, or both of you would have had to multitask holding on and laughing.
You held out a hand, gesturing clearly. "No, no...you look adorable! I just-- I didn't...expect...that." The joy wasn't really stopping, to the point where your stomach was starting to hurt.
After catching your breaths, Taylor sits next to you back in her seat, smiling. "Its cute right?" In the meanwhile, you glanced at her, trying to not go back into such a state. But you regained your composure enough for the happiness to overtake.
"Yes?! Oh, my gosh...how...where did you find this? Its full of kittens." The material was fluffy when you reach out to touch it, practically imitating the softness of a cat.
The cheeky little giggle that came from her showed that she definitely planned to surprise you, and it did wonders. "I saw it at like a store somewhere, and I just, I had to buy it. Its so comfy too."
A hum leaves you. "It is really soft."
Then you settle back, relaxing your arm back down. "I was gonna ask you if I could borrow your jacket."
She looked at you. "Oh, you don't need a jacket, I could just be holding my arms over you."βher arms reach out, and the sleeves of the robe covers you.β"Boom. Done. Blanket."
You were quietly trying to keep your laughs, deciding to simply turn and bury into her shoulder at the silliness thats happened. "Baby..."
She lovingly gazed at you, kissing the top of your head.
Its easy to say the next hours of your trip on the jet was all filled with jokes and coziness.

Summary: You had seemingly brought in and decided that a stray cat now lived with you and Jessica, and she was trying to be against it, but in the end, only had grown to like it.

A/N: ...it was only a matter of time til I brought cats into this world. :] if you know me, you know
The hallway was long, but amongst many other apartment doors, there was one standing out.
It was by the very end, having endured multiple repairs. Above the doorknob was an obscured glass stretching up, and upon it, were the words 'Alias Investigations' imprinted.
There were sounds of clutter, and shadows of figures moving.
Footsteps echo later, and it was Malcolm walking down the hallway, his path arriving right in front of the door.
With one hand, he held onto a stack of prints, and with the other, he opened the door.
"Hey, I got the papers you wanted..." He says, though trailing off and stopping right there in the doorway.
The scene that greeted him was a surprise.
A very, very orange cat was in your hands as you stood at the front of the desk.
And Jessica was staring at it until she looked to Malcolm.
He had his mouth open before he started to speak again. "Oh...I didn't know you were taking care of a cat."
That went by with a confused expression, and he had to make sure the papers wouldn't slip out his hand from being taken off guard.
Jessica, without hesitation, deadpanned. "I wasn't."
Then, she ran a hand over her face, as if she was someone trying to be responsible, but with the add-on of being extremely tired.
"Malcolm. Y/N here is trying to let..." she glances back at the stretched out orange cat, with paws that were holding onto your hands. "...that live here."
His gaze stayed on you, then went back to Jess, and then only moving between you both. "Its a cute cat." Malcolm shrugged.
Jessica's face turned into some disbelieved expression, with some offended look. "I'm not letting a cat stay here!" She says, raising her arms in the air as an aimless gesture.
"To be fair, you might need one," he says, pointing casually. With some amusement, Malcolm even had a tiny smile.
But he retrieved his phone that he left earlier, and now, his aim was certainly to head for an escape back out. "But...umm, I will let you two talk that out. Good luck."
Then the next thing that sounded was the door gently shutting.
She blinks at the entrance. Clearly, having lost her "extra" backup defense who didn't even try.
Jessica simply stared at you now. Her body's decided she can't do anything else, especially because she's resided to only try to organize her files.
But of course you came in. With the creature. Of whom she, for the love of god hoped it wasn't the alien creature Captain MarvelβCarol owned. Her and her greatness losing that in the streets would not be great.
It didn't look like that specific cat. Flerken. Whatever it was called.
And so, she just avoids the cuteness gaze.
"Emotional support cat?" You say, tilting your head.
"Oh, my god," she mumbled, leaning against the desk.
...There was indeed the tiniest hint of a raise in her lips. Butβ"No."
There was music playing from the laptop; a playlist on shuffle. Organizing and filing was boring, but didn't require as much brain power as solving things, so songs were fine for Jessica.
However...a cat...
You rested its back paws on the desk when the chorus of a song came. This was always on the radio. "I don't mind spendin' everyday..."
The cat's upper paws were used for a small dancing look. It was just an up and down hand movement really.
The cat stood there, pupils big and clueless, staring at its paws that soon point to Jessica. "Out on your corner in the pouring rain."
She resisted a smile, but couldn't help it, going to sit down at her chair with a shake of her head.
Basically; an 'I can't believe I live with you...'
"Look for the girl with the broken smile." The cat's ears flatten, and the fluff met your skin when you lightly rest your chin against it.
With the best possible integrity, she rolls her chair forward and diverts her focus to her laptop with a sigh. Again.
"Ask her if she wants to stay a while."
"And she will...be loved," you sang, reaching out to poke at her hand teasingly, repeating the lyric. Her eyes narrowed to you.
She eventually breathed out a half laugh. "You're a dork." It was said in an affectionate tone, mostly.
You finally let go of the cat in mercy, but it was watching Jessica's fingers now, how they tap against the desk in thought as she leans to the side of her chair.
"Just to be clear, I'm not taking care of that." She paused, pointing at you. "You are."
Instantly, you beam, arms around the kitty. "So thats a yes?!" Its ears went up at the sudden excitement of your voice more than understanding what you two were saying.
She groaned and exhaled. "Don't make me say it..."
Like something slowly entering her life and slowly easing sneakily like she didn't give it permission to, despite being such an adorable little animal.
At first, it was little pesty actions like the cat coming onto her desk and interrupting her flow, or her needing to put it back down multiple times and point at it.
For example...
Her eyes skim over a pile of inked written text on paper, sided with pictures and categories.
"Hey--!" Jessica exclaimed, the second she saw the fluff of a tail swishing across the document she was reading.
It waltzed right on the desk, and then sat right upon the pile of papers that she needed.
Of course.
Jessica blinks, while the cat looked as if it was the most innocent thing ever, giving a small 'mew!' in greeting.
A sigh leaves her.
"...You can't be on here."
Then, she points to the floor.
"Down. Go."
It stared back at her, blinking unresponsively, and possibly in confusion.
She pinches the bridge of her nose like she was thinking about you, and all the ways of how to get back at you.
Or to lovingly, very lovingly end up throwing a cushion at you. Or the cat itself. Sure.
She did not want to pick it up.
She's never picked it up before. Why does she have to? Nope. It was always you. The food, and...
Jessica closes her eyes, and accepted her fate, eventually just looking back and reaching out.
Considering her strength, it was lighter than it looked. Like picking up a folded blanket. Usually, people would think something is light only to find its real weight, but she was often the opposite.
The cat didn't mind, landing back on the floor. But it looked around like it wondered why the height changed, only for it to stare back up at the desk again.
Jessica squinted. "...No."
And then it wiggled its back in target, preparing, and jumping enough to catch the edge of the desk with a bit of a struggle.
She had dear lord hoped the papers would be left intact, save for any scruffs, but scratches would have her giving up on the case. But it made it on top.
Somehow, without a single thing falling.
"This is the worst day of my life."
And this, jumping and going back downβwas repeated for a bit, until eventually, it was simply Jessica slouched over the desk, face in her arms as she turned to look over at the cat.
It had been many attempts.
You weren't at home.
She thought of entrapping it in the bedroom at this point, but that, 1. Felt cruel. 2. The cat would most definitely meow constantly. 3. The door would fill with scratches.
...4. The cat learns how to open the door.
So, she simply gazed at the ginger fur splayed on her desk, one taking a quarter of the space practically.
But it was also curled up seemingly cozily, and she had veered it off the paperwork just enough to not occupy her work. Even if there was the sudden whip of the occasional tail.
Another time was when she went to the bathroom, bringing her laptop like always, because she would much rather not only stare at walls and everything while sitting on the toilet.
Besides, it'd be 'a waste of time without multitasking.'
But just as she closes the door, her heart skipped a beat at the sight of something filling her sink.
The orange problem, laying right there, and it fit like it was liquid. She was in disbelief.
"How are you even..." she trailed off, like the question doesn't even matter at this point, whether the cat was comfortable or not.
"You know cockroaches are in here, right?" the words were said, but it really couldn't mind less. It was cold. Comfy. Perfect space approved.
Then Jessica paused. One really important thought came across her mind.
Why was she talking to a cat who could barely understand her anyway?
Then, she inhales steadily.
This is fine.
She's had a whole criminal walk into a room while she was on the toilet, somewhere when she was in jail anyway. At some point. In her past. Its a long story. The criminal was off-putting and she had knocked them out in the middle of it.
Done, story explained and settled.
But the point is, a cat wasn't comparable to that attention. Probably less.
Once she sat down, her eyes stayed on the fur like it would move.
"...You're taking my laptop's spot." she mumbled. The cat looked once, then pressed its face back against its fur and the cold sink.
For some odd reason, this very ginger looking thing, did not represent all the cats of the same hue at all. It wasn't a troublemaker, other than taking up Jessica's space.
It never knocked things down, other than the occasional accidents.
So Jessica looked at it as if it was suspicious now.
But the truth was, she had gotten very lucky.
And in an almost sweet way, it almost mirrored her own personality.
Taking space...being quiet...a little aggravating and annoying, but somehow, in the tiniest ways.
She contemplated.
And then her eyes moved to the sink's faucet.
The knob.
Maybe.
But then she gave up with another sigh, and put her laptop on the edge of the sink, not interrupting much of the originating taker of space, since the cat's head was further on the front of the sink, than the side.
Its purrs went quietly in the background alongside keyboard taps.
The third actually showed her being caring, rather than simply only accepting the creature in her home.
She was about to search in her kitchen, looking for other whiskey bottles since her shelf stash has emptied.
But that only led her standing there, squinting.
Fur.
Again.
Strands scattered on the floor like it had one too many. It wasn't a regular tabby.
The more she looked, the more she sees the orange shape standing there looking at her beside the empty bowl like it was waiting.
Pleading, with those big adorable damn eyes.
So Jessica stands there like it was in a stand-off first.
But really, the reality was, she had messy hair and a way-too-tired body running on its last fumes.
"Okay, but can I...just have my own fill first?" She mumbled, going to the fridge, and searching.
There, she found the Redbull, at least. She preferred whiskey, but it'll do. The tab opened with a click that followed a hissβwhich thankfully wasn't the cat.
That one was silent.
She was sure that someday, she'd faint and pass out from the cat jumpscaring with its silent paws and steps in the middle of the night, in the dark. But to be fair, it wasn't hard to spot with its vibrance.
After a sip or more, Jessica exhales, fixating her gaze on the catfood.
Wet cat food, was the text on the front. She remembers it being better, and the way you told her about it too.
Even if at the time, she looked like she was uninterested and having been on her camera or sipping booze.
She did listen still.
With a sigh, she took the bowl, and opened up the bag, putting the food in. The cat watches, having stood and was following her across the kitchen.
Its tail brushes her legs, and she had to tighten her lips in response to the feeling.
Alongside with the now somehow who-approved-this-affection nuzzle from the cat that made her freeze when she finished up.
The bowl was soon back on the floor.
She huffed, gently nudging the cat. "Go. Shoo. You have your food...stop...being so annoying." she mumbled, but hesitated on her last few words, and just watched.
It leaned down and started nibbling away, munching and enjoying the meal.
It was a day where she's only just come home, tired and immensely having a packaged bundle of sores.
She walks in, and falls to the mercy of her chair.
She could've gone to the couch, but right now, slumping against the desk sounded like the better option. Until anyone experiences it, they wouldn't quite know why.
It was a hard case.
Someone taken.
She had to stop her head from being loud. But she's already emptied out her thermal bottle that was once full of whiskey on the way here.
So she was out of it.
Then, she felt pressure near her arm.
For a second, it could be thought of as a nerve or tendon dying, calling out to her in protest, but when she looked up from her arms, she finds herself greeted with a pair of orange eyes and the cat.
Instantly, she inhales, and leaned back. A surprise. For sure.
Then, she sighed, and relented to staying there anyway. More comfortable than if she leaned back.
She could feel soft fur, curling and resting around her tired figure, only to fill her ears with purrs.
With a peek, she gazed back to it again.
It almost seemed like it sensed her emotions, and provided comfort.
But it was a cat.
Then, she reaches slowly, and started with a few pets.
In the midst of it, she thought; 'please don't scratch me, please don't scratch me, please don't scratch me' with the pair of 'don't bite. I swear.'
But it didn't.
Other than a lick to her hair, and her mouth fell open in shock.
"I'm not a cat."
But that was the only time. It only turned into nuzzling affection by the kitty next.
She sat there, resting tiredly with fingers threaded in orange, like its become something to cling to for the time being.
And now was the nail that sealed everything off for her to finally, maybe accept it.
The cat has owned a bunch of titles now--problem, ball of fur, cat, little orange, and desk hoarder.
But not yet named.
So here you both were, all cuddled up in bed, cozy with the soft sheets.
You were nuzzled against her chest, and she was content to stay calm, occasionally just drifting in the hour.
It was all sweet.
Until she finds the orange thing jumping on the bed and deciding by itself, to join the cuddle pile.
A small grumble left her. "...I'm not sharing..." she pulled you closer, while the cat laid down, its cheek against the mattress as if it wanted to make itself look adorable.
And that only led you to realize and start thinking about what names it should have.
Which, did not really amuse Jess, because now she has to sit with the fact that it may be permanent.
But she buried herself against your hair, trying to hold onto the feel of your clothes. "I'm only calling it a problem..."
You smile under her, reaching to the kitty despite everything.
Its stayed here so long now anyway.
And eventually, one word came from you. "...Aster."
She rose a brow, looking to you.
In meeting her gaze with a grounded expression, your eyes soften. "Its a flower."
She tries to think. Purple. A distinct shape. You both had roamed a certain flower shop somewhere in the past, and a couple of them did hold on.
"Or asterisk...for something special," you added in. At that, her eyebrows inevitably furrowed.
"Asterisk for a cat?"
A giggle leaves you. "Its cute."
She looked at you like she had all the love in the world for you, but had no heart to say the oddness and yet, simplicity of it.
"Its a text format--sweetheart." The endearment expressed itself without seeming weird, like its sunken in enough to be gentle from her.
You smile up at her, letting your hand drift away from the cat and onto her arm.
"Come on," you lightly encourage her.
She puts her hands in the air gently. "Okay. Just because..." she shrugs.
You rose a brow slowly, expecting her to admit it. "...It means a star." She then added something else, "A dumb star."
A gasp leaves you. "Jess!"
She smiled. "What?"
...
"It is cute." She murmured, her hand slowly petting the napping cat.
You held back a smile, as if not wanting to say 'you said it'.
She eyed you, but then simply just let it go by leaning into you more.
Aster was eventually given availability to the bed, and the cuddle pile, even as Jessica kept you close than ever.
- bonus<3
"...Kitty!" the little one called out, as Jessica held all the affection in her gaze.
The orange cat greeted with a rub of its head, already finding the girl to be something dear and special to Jess, and that had gotten it soft pets from tiny hands.
Giggles echoed out, and somehow, that made everything much more content.
A/N: I unfortunately won't have many fics with dani or at all since I'm not one for that kind of thing...but I find it very cute and adorable to include her meeting the cat. so <3 she's also had so many precious panels with jess in the comics. ugh.
