Lena Luthor did not call in sick.Ā
Sheād worked through the sniffles more times than she could count, forced herself through board meetings that could have been emails, and one memorable bout of food poisoning that had ended with her presenting quarterly projections while keeping a trash can discreetly beside her chair.Ā
The CEO of L-Corp had a reputation to uphold. And such a reputation could not be tarnished by the triviality of taking a sick day.āÆĀ
But that morning was different. She felt it from the momentĀ sheādĀ woken up. Heavy. Lena felt heavy, her eyes taking too long to adjust to the morning light filtering through her blinds. Her alarm was loud and ringing in her ears. She reached over blindly, tapping her phone to silence it.Ā
For several seconds she just lay there. The urge to roll over and go back to sleep was pulling at her aching muscles. āShit.ā HerĀ voiceĀ croaked on the sole word as Lena tried to sit up,Ā stomachĀ rolling at the wave of dizziness the sudden movement caused. ThisĀ wasnātĀ just a coldā¦Ā
This could not have come at a worse time. There was a meeting with new investors at ten, two contracts waiting for her approval, and Jess would undoubtedly have a stack of paperwork prepared the second she walked into the office. Not to mention the projects in the lab. The thought alone exhausted her.Ā
By some miracle, or just blind luck. Lena managed to drag herself to her bathroom. She debated not even looking in the mirror, already knowing the sight which waited her. She looked as bad as she felt. Pale skin, glassy eyes, her usually well-behaved hair sticking out at all angles likeĀ sheādĀ tossed and turned the whole night.Ā
She spluttered, not the kind of cough that could be waved off as simple irritation or allergies. Nasty, deep, the type which made you take several steps away from the person it was coming from. Lena let a small, rare whine escape her lips. Today was proving to be too much, andĀ sheādĀ only been awake for 10 minutes.Ā
Guilt and apprehension pounded in her head as Lena unsteadily made her way back to her bed, silently grateful for the soft mattress as she sank into the covers. ThisĀ wasnātĀ going to work. She reached for theĀ phone, ignoring theĀ voiceĀ in the back of her mind telling her to just suck it up and before she lost her nerve - she called Jess.Ā
Her assistantĀ picked up onĀ the second ring, āMiss Luthor, this is a little early, Iām still 30 minutes out.āĀ
āI need-ā LenaĀ began, her throat objecting to the sudden use. She quickly mutedĀ the call to cover the rough coughing fit that began, āI need you to reschedule my day.Ā SomethingāsĀ comeĀ up.āĀ
Somehow,Ā she could feel the way Jess frowned through the phone, āIs everything okay? Did something happen?ā The way her assistantsĀ voiceĀ picked up a notchĀ wasnātĀ lost on her either.Ā
āEverythingāsĀ fine. Just let me know onceĀ itāsĀ done.ā HerĀ voiceĀ cracked at the end and Lena squeezed her eyes shut in annoyance, praying JessĀ wouldnātĀ mention it.Ā
SheĀ didnātĀ - but the assistantĀ definitely heardĀ it. āIāll text you when itās done.ā She said simply.Ā
Lena thanked her and ended the call, pulling the covers back over her as she led back down. SheĀ probably shouldāveĀ taken some medicine,Ā maybe drankĀ some water. But she was too tired for that right now. All she wanted to do was go back to sleep.Ā
Kara stood over the main table at the DEO, the shiny crest of her suit reflecting the morning sun whilst she listened intently as Alex andĀ JāonnĀ muttered amongst themselves.Ā
There had beenĀ some sort of anĀ incident overnight and the readings had been strange enough to attract their attention. Something had fallen from the sky.Ā
This came from a building site outside National City,āĀ JāonnĀ explained, on the screen behind him he enlarged the image of a small metallic device recovered from the impact crater. The same object which sat in the middle of the table. āItās definitely not human technology.āĀ
Kara leaned closer, eyes narrowing. The object was unlike anything she had seen before. Its surface appeared almost liquid, shifting between smooth metal and intricate patterns that seemed to move beneath the surface.Ā
āDo we know what it does?āĀ
āNot yet,ā Alex answered, her hands on her hips, āThe problem is that every attempt weāve made to scan it causes it to shut down.āĀ
Kara looked back at her then back to the object.Ā JāonnĀ reaching out to stop her hand before she could poke it. āThen why are we stillĀ lookingĀ at it?āĀ
Alex sighed, āBecause we know that someone else already had the technology to make sense of this.ā She gave Kara a look, raising an eyebrow for her to get the hint. She did not. āLena.āĀ
āLena, myĀ Lena?ā The blonde clarified although she already knew the answer.Ā Of courseĀ Lena had already worked out how to read this stuff.āÆĀ
JāonnĀ nodded. āSheās been developing alien material analysis technology,ā He explained, āAdvanced sensors capable ofĀ identifyingĀ non-terrestrial elements.Ā Apparently,Ā accordingĀ to our dataĀ a prototype originating in one of her labsĀ was able to communicate with the device.āāÆĀ
The pair of them looked to Kara, sharing their next thought. Her eyes widened as she realised what they were asking of her.Ā
āDo I really have to be the one to go?ā She fought back the urge to grumble, āSheās sort of mad at me - well, at Supergirl right now.ā ItĀ hadnātĀ been long since the whole Kryptonite issue had left them on less than stable relations.Ā
āThe DEO needs access to it one way or another. We just thoughtĀ itādĀ be best if it came from you *asking* rather than taking it by force.ā Alex placed a hand on her sisterās back, āPlease?āĀ
Kara groaned loudly and dramatically, raising her hands in defeat as she titled her head back āFine!ā She said already walking towards the exit, adding, āYou both owe me one.āĀ
ItĀ didnātĀ take long to get to L-Corp, as much as she tried to detour, Kara found herself on the balcony of Lenaās office.āÆĀ
She knocked on the glass, loud enough to heard and waited with her arms crossed. Lena had been cold ever since their argument over her making Kryptonite. Kara tapped her foot impatiently, assuming the Luthor was keeping her waiting on purpose.Ā
To her surprise, through the pristinely clean window she could see the door to Lenaās officeĀ openĀ but itĀ wasnātĀ Lena who was there. A smaller lady, one who she quickly recognised as the CEOās assistant stepped into the office, eyes widened with surprise as she saw the hero on the balcony.Ā
āSupergirl! What can I-ā JessĀ stammered, not expecting this today, āCan I help you with something?āĀ
āI need to speak with Miss Luthor.ā Kara said, not willing to give too much away, āItās important.āĀ
Jessās expression dulled a little, āSheās not here today, she phoned to cancel her meetings this morning, rather unexpectedly too.āĀ
Kara frowned, āDo you know where she is?āāÆĀ
āShe called me from her personal line thisĀ morningĀ so I assumed she was still at home. But I reallyĀ donātĀ know other than that. Is there anything I can help with?āĀ
Supergirl shook her head, offering a kind smile, āNo,Ā itāsĀ okay. Thank you for letting me know.Ā IāllĀ see if I can catch up with herĀ at a later dateĀ then.ā With a final thank you, Kara lifted into the air and began making her way back to the DEO.Ā
She tried. But Alexās unimpressed face flashed into her mind. Kara knewĀ sheādĀ be unhappy if she left without any sort of information. The hero groaned loudly to herself, forcing herself to turn around and head towards Lenaās apartment. She was going to have to face herĀ sooner or later, at least this gave them an excuse to talkā¦Ā
An uneasy feeling on anticipation built inĀ herĀ stomachĀ as she quietly landed on the balcony to Lenaās penthouse. The curtains were drawn, a little unusual for this time of day but sheĀ didnātĀ think much of it.Ā
SheādĀ been here countless times, both as Supergirl and Kara. But this time, it felt like overstepping. Like she was somewhere sheĀ shouldnātĀ be.Ā
For a moment Kara debated just returning to theĀ DEO, orĀ coming back a different day. But she was here now,Ā mightĀ as wellĀ see it through. Swallowing her nerves, she knocked loudly on the glass window.Ā
āMiss Luthor?ā She called out, āIts Supergirl.āĀ
A low mumble came from inside. If itĀ werenātĀ for her heightenedĀ hearing,Ā sheĀ wouldāveĀ never made it out. Kara always tried to respect peopleās privacy as much as she could butĀ even,Ā sheĀ couldnātĀ ignore the absurdity of the situation. She flashed her vision, eyes scanning the apartment.Ā
Just inside, she could see Lena sitting up on her sofa, blanket falling off her shoulder as she rubbed at her eye with a balled fist, the sort of way you would having just woken up. But thatĀ couldnātĀ be right. Could it?Ā
Slow, uneven footsteps approached and Kara instinctively stepped away from the door. Just a second later, Lena pulled open the curtains with a confused expression plain on her face. She fumbled with the lock to the balcony, pushing open the door with more difficulty thanĀ required.Ā
āSupergirl..?ā LenaāsĀ voiceĀ came out in a rasp, goosebumps prickling along her skin as she shivered at the cool city breeze despite the summer heat.Ā
āMiss Luthor?ā Karaās brows furrowedĀ immediately, suddenly losing her words, āI-āĀ
The sight in front of her had completely thrown her off. She had expected Lena to be irritated. Cold. That was how things had been between them lately. Every conversation felt like walking through a minefield, neither of them willing to admit they hurt the other more than intended.Ā
But theĀ KyrptonianĀ had not expected this. Lena Luthor looked exhausted. Even as Kara, she had never seen her like this, dressed only in a baggy college t-shirt, blackĀ shortsĀ and a fever-flushed face to match, āAre youĀ feelingĀ okay?ā She asked before she could stop herself.Ā
āItās none of your concern,ā Lena sniffled, swiping a crumbled tissue that Kara had failed to realise she was clutching under her pink nose, āWhatĀ areĀ you doing here?āĀ
āI-Ā urm,āāÆĀ KaraĀ stuttered, already feeling like an idiot for coming by.Ā Of course,Ā something had to be wrong if LenaĀ wasnātĀ at work. āIāmĀ sorry,Ā youāreĀ obviously unwell.Ā IāllĀ come back another time. Sorry for waking you.ā She turned, already preparing to lift herself into the air.Ā
Kara paused, turning back around as Lena leant against the door. āYou didnāt come just to check up on me, what did you need?ā She asked, trying her best to force herĀ voiceĀ out to an audible level, quickly regretting the action when it sent her into a coughing fit, her cheeks turning a deeper shade of red at her outburst.Ā
The blonde hesitated, unsureĀ whetherĀ to continue with her original plan. On one hand, Lena looked like she was minutes away from passing out and reallyĀ shouldāveĀ been lying down. But the object might beĀ dangerous,Ā and theyĀ werenātĀ any closer to getting any answers about its originsā¦āÆĀ
āThe DEO needs your help - well specifically your equipment.ā Kara said finally, leaning her back against the railing of the balcony as she explained the situation quickly to the best of her abilities, āItādĀ be aĀ really massiveĀ help ifĀ youādĀ let the teams access your scanner.Ā ItādĀ be the director himself, and I assure youĀ itāllĀ be returned in the same condition it was found.āĀ
The CEO nodded slowly as she followed along, with the fever it was taking her a little longer to process things. She was too tired to argue, too tired to goĀ round and roundĀ in the same cycles. And there was something soft in the way that Supergirl was looking at her. āI see.ā Lena finally said, sniffling damply before deciding, āIāll let your team have access to it.āĀ
Supergirlās eyes lit up, āThank you so much, this means a lot.ā She said as Lena relayed the location and password to one of her more discreet labs in the city, āThis isĀ a big help.Ā IāllĀ let you know when everything is sorted.āāÆĀ
Kara quickly relayed the information to Alex who began moving operations at the DEO. Kara looked back to Lena in the doorway. She wanted nothing more to usher her inside under a blanket and make sure she was okay. But sheĀ couldnāt, not as Supergirl.Ā
āDo you need anything, Miss Luthor?ā The hero asked carefully, trying to mask the sympathy in her tone.Ā
Lena bit her lip for a moment before shaking her head, āNo, thank you. But ifĀ youāllĀ excuse me, I really should get back inside.ā Her breath hitched, clearly fighting back the urge to sneeze.Ā
āOf course, feel better Miss Luthor.ā Kara nodded, watching as she headed back inside, clearlyĀ exhaustedĀ and ready to collapse back onto her sofa. Before leaving, Supergirl took once last chance to scan the apartment, making a mental note of the supplies (orĀ lackĀ of) Lena had on hand.Ā
SheādĀ be back later. And this timeĀ sheādĀ be prepared.Ā
