6000 years. they'd been friends for 6000 years and spent the whole time pretending they weren't. they loved each other more than anything else in the universe and they only got a couple of years to live without heaven and hell breathing down their necks after saving the world. they didn't get any time at all to live together with everything out in the open. nightingales might have sang in berkeley square again but they weren't there to hear them. they never got to be an us. after all that.
It’s a day later and I’m still astounded by that writing choice, and I’m really irked by people defending it with, “Well not all stories have happy endings.” But the original book literally had one lol. S1/the book ended on a note so completely different from this that this giant tonal shift doesn’t fit with the rest of the show; plus, the more I think about it, the more this feels like a pointless exercise in misery. I’m not inherently opposed to tragedy in fiction (though, like I said, the book isn’t a supposed to be a tragedy), but I’ve never liked when something feels miserable just for the sake of being miserable, and that’s what their memories getting wiped and time ending that way in that universe feels like. It feels weirdly nihilistic. There were a million different ways to end it and no reason to end it that way. I’m going to be baffled about why they thought this was a good idea for…probably forever lol
SAME!!!!
Like, Crowley is an optimist!!!! How is erasing the universe (and doing a fucking suicide pact) optimistic?!?!?!?!
Why would you give me Crowley and Aziraphale just to take them away? Make all the philosophical arguments you want, dissect the characters for days.
“They find each other in every universe” is a hilarious cope actually because it implies souls and destiny which are inherently irreconcilable with the whole purported point of starting a new universe devoid of any sort of design or ineffable plans.
But there is zero universe in which killing off the benevolent protagonists is a happy ending.
Yes! Thank you! I agree with everything: the shift from comedy to tragedy, the pointlessness of the sacrifice, but what I really can't get over it, and I've been saying it non stop since yesterday, is that they spin it as if they gave humans true free will when they're actually swapping a predeterminism system for another. It makes no sense whichever way you look at it.
We're a team, a group. Group of the two of us
