I also assume [Robby/Whitaker] is one of those ships where the fandom could have let’s say 1000 posts in a week and like 975 have to do with it

YEPP it very much is. And here’s the thing: my issue isn’t that the ship was born out of basically nothing. I have ships like that myself! But when the ship becomes so popular that it eclipses canon wlw and interracial relationships…

Yeah. That’s when I get pissed off. Especially since the only ammo for their relationship is two scenes in which Whitaker could’ve been replaced by literally any other character and it would’ve played out the same.

And again, this isn’t about any individual shipper. It isn’t even just about this ship and this fandom. It’s about the way mlm relationships are almost always the most popular ships, getting posts and fics galore, even based on nothing at all. Meanwhile, canon wlw and interracial relationships are lucky to get even half that number (and fanon wlw and interracial relationships? Even ones with more ammo than the mlm relationships? They’re lucky to get a quarter).

I’ve seen a number of people say they got into the Pitt for Robby/Whitaker and were disappointed that they’re not canon. I’ve seen people be surprised that Garsantos exists and is canon. Let me repeat that: this fanon ship (Robby/Whitaker), which blew up before s2 and was based on two scenes, got so popular that it drew people to the show, and they got surprised that there is canon gay rep, but it’s not the ship they thought it was.

This isn’t the only fandom to have this problem ofc. It’s not even the most egregious case of “shipping two guys in the same frame based on nothing.” But the timeline of events, the speed of how quickly it became popular and how it influenced a lot of people’s perceptions of this show, is wild and makes it one of the most telling examples of the “mlm supremacy, wlw and interracial ships can take the scraps” trend across fandoms.
