8. are they close to their family?

Daphne’s parents don’t approve of her choices necessarily since the end of the war, and they definitely don’t approve of the fact that she hasn’t made a respectable match yet. Despite that, she is loved and has confidence in that much. She’s also reasonably close with her sister; they’ve both changed considerably since they’ve gotten older and taken different paths, but there will always be their shared childhood and that’s something that can’t be erased. They don’t always agree and this became apparent during the war when Daphne stopped Astoria from going back after the Slytherins were escorted out. This is the cause of some friction, but doesn’t mean Daphne doesn’t care.

24. opinion on horror films?

Daphne isn’t particularly bothered by horror films or particularly fascinated by them either. She doesn’t, however, enjoy anything along the lines of psychological thriller before she has to sleep.

31. are they a morning person or night person?

Daphne’s a night person given the choice, but grudgingly endures mornings when she has to be in early for work. She finds it easier to enjoy mornings when she gets to stay in bed for them, or when she has something that she’s excited about to make getting up worthwhile.

THE WORST THING about planning a wedding was not being able to choose the guests. Blaise had almost complete control over everything else. Absolute obedience wasn’t in the contract, per se, but you’d be foolish to ignore his judgement - a fact he always made very clear in his opening owls. This particular party was a tad too kitsch for his tastes ( he had to spend two weeks convincing the bride to choose real flowers over fake, for merlin’s sake ), but everyone looked happy. Bar him, of course. 

He needn’t stay much longer. The music was turning from slow and classy to rowdy and tuneless. The bride and groom were lost in each other’s arms, and the open-bar had ended hours ago. That hadn’t stopped Blaise snatching up another bottle of prosecco, if only to help him cope with the amount of badly fitted suits he’d had to witness today; was he truly the only person on Earth with taste? 

Blaise bowed farewell to one of the bridesmaids, who had been eyeing him with a certain hunger, and dipped into the garden. Though he was loathed to admit it, you couldn’t go wrong with lights thread between the branches of an elegant tree. Here, out of the eye of any onlookers, he sipped his drink straight from the bottle. Then he heard a rustle, and realised he wasn’t quite alone. ❝ Come out, come out, wherever you are, ❞ he said, tone more indifferent than intrigued.

   Daphne didn’t mind weddings, which was just as well because there were certain occasions that she was outright expected to attend, and this was one of them. Of course, an open bar tended to ease the way for everyone at the beginning of the occasion, but Daphne was reaching saturation point with smiling politely and agreeing it was a lovely occasion by now. People were getting louder and so was the music, and while she wasn’t opposed to a good time, this wasn’t her preferred way to go about it. Especially when those who couldn’t hold their drink started to make terrible attempts at flirting. There was other company that she liked better on a number of occasions.

   Clad in a dress that was a subtle, soft shade of silver with delicately hand-stitched lace detail, Daphne didn’t stand out so significantly that she couldn’t slip away. The gardens were a much more soothing place to be than the dancefloor, and Daphne took a minute to appreciate the cool night air before registering at the sound of a smooth, familiar voice that she wasn’t alone. “Blaise?” she asked, more than a little relieved. “Did you need a breather as well?” It wasn’t until she came upon him and spotted the bottle in his hand that she raised both her eyebrows in amusement. “Looks like you’re having a good time all by yourself. Was this one your handiwork, then?”

    HOW THEY CALLED THIS TRAINING, hannah didn’t know ( she was beginning to dread becoming an actual healer ).  only a week in and she felt exhaustion weighing down her every step.  her demanding schedule now required coffee to get her through the day.  it was an odd adjustment to make, switching from tea doused in milk and sugar to coffee strengthened with extra shots of expresso, but hannah gave in to her new habit without much protest.  if it would get her through the day, she was hardly going to put up a fight.  in fact, she supported it wholeheartedly and made a point to grab a cup during every lunch break she had since her never ending first day of training. 

     THE CAFE SHE CHOSE THIS TIME ENTICED HER MAINLY DUE TO ITS PROXIMITY.  her training supervisors understandably didn’t like it when she arrived late for her afternoon shift.  hannah didn’t want to take any risks, especially when she had a penchant for being tardy despite her best efforts.  still, when hannah eased into a chair after ordering her coffee and baguette, a content sigh escaped her lips and she began to imagine staying there forever.  when a familiar voice drifted towards her, hannah blinked out of her daydream and launched into pleasantries,  “ oh, hello!  how are you? ” 

     A BIT INDEED, hannah noted.  it was almost wrong to see daphne greengrass of all people outside of hogwarts.  still, hannah smiled pleasantly at her questions, though she found it hard to answer.  she had been so preoccupied with work that it seemed a piece of vital news slipped right past her.  “ merlin, am i out of the loop. ” she admitted, a faint blush tinging her cheeks. 

   Hannah looked as though she’d been run through the mill, that sitting down was something of a relief. It wasn’t a thought born of judgement, but Daphne noticed the difference. People changed since Hogwarts, and the difference between boarding school and the lives they were supposed to make after had been complicated by war. Theirs was a generation that existed in a state of perpetual culture shock, expected to pick up and carry on as normal after everything that had happened. The impossible had been asked of them twice over. “Not too bad,” Daphne answered, tilting her head at Hannah with a quirk of lips. “This seat taken, or do you mind if I join you?” Studying her, she added, “Busy day?”

   The statement that Hannah was out of the loop surprised Daphne a little, but then again, Healers didn’t get much by way of a breather, or so her idea of the profession suggested. “You didn’t know?” That was acknowledged with a slight frown. “Not that I mean anything by that, but it’s been all over the Prophet and everything. Your job must really be putting you through the ringer. Do you have long for your break?”

  draco’s eyes were dancing, not at all visible in the complete absence of light in the room, when daphne joked about him being back by dawn. that was the point, wasn’t it? it couldn’t be memorable. memorable implied some sort of emotional connection. it implied coming back for more and wanting to stay. he didn’t do that. “please drag me out of whatever place you find me in if i ever stay with someone until dawn,” he said, drawing out the last word. “that is shocking,” he agreed dryly on the words of daphne resting her voice. “good thing though. the loyal listeners of your show much be able to hear the dulcet tones of your voice well, because otherwise they are not gonna tune in.” was he even serious any more? who knew, draco sure didn’t.    getting into bed was much more preferable to standing out in the cold of the apartment, or getting to the apartment in the september night chill to begin with. daphne, too, was warm and he couldn’t help but curl closer to her, shivering faintly. “okay, so i’m giving your show exposure by having it on in the store where plenty of people visit, and you wonder if i haven’t had enough of your voice?” he asked, teasing her. “the real answer here should be thank you, draco, because i am teaching people to have the good sense to listen to your show.” he shook his head a little, messing up his hair further. the mention of the store made him wrinkle his nose (which she, again, probably couldn’t see) and sigh.”i don’t like running the store,” he declared matter of fact. “but the franchise owner is still ill and someone has to. and apparently i don’t trust new people with our store. it’ll be a disaster once i take over the entire company.” three continents, over a hundred stores and way too many people working for them. was it too late to do something so scandalous that he’d promptly get disowned? probably.

   Daphne could hear the amusement in Draco’s voice if not see it in his expression; by this point, they knew one another well enough that she didn’t need the visual. “You have my solemn promise that I will,” she said, amused in her turn. “So long as you do the same for me, alright? If I stay that late then I’m making a seriously poor life decision.” She wasn’t remotely interested in attaching herself to someone who would try to restrict her or think they could weigh in on what she did. Sleeping with someone didn’t mean they got to own her. But for when she felt something too much like lonely, Daphne already had somebody to see her through, and he was right there with her. It went both ways, and Draco was on the short list of people she really valued and trusted. “And you love my dulcet tones provided I’m not trying to sing in the shower at the top of my voice.” That was not a moment anyone apart from her poor roommate got to deal with, after all.

   When Daphne felt Draco shiver, she smoothed one of her hands over his back, skin warm against material. “You do hear me talk a disproportionate amount more than other people,” she pointed out with a grin that he couldn’t see. “You could be forgiven for getting tired of it sometimes.” Then pausing, she added, “But thank you, Draco, for educating the masses so well.” Though the words were spoken teasingly, there was a certain amount of affection behind it. Not everyone got them or how they worked, but honestly, it didn’t bother her. They got it and that was the main thing. It meant that right then, Daphne’s attention was reserved for Draco stating that he didn’t like running the store. “At least it’s temporary,” she said, voice sympathetic. “Any idea on when you’ll be able to step back again and go back to your potions?” The remark that Draco didn’t trust new people with the store wasn’t really a surprise; he didn’t trust people easily in general. “It won’t be a disaster because you’re too good at what you do for that, if you actually want to do it,” she said softly. “Just bear in mind that other people are paid very well to do things so you don’t have to. You can’t be everywhere at once and you shouldn’t have to be.” Leaning up, she dropped a kiss against his hair. “In the meantime, I ought to make sure I come and steal you for a break more often. When do you next have to be in?”

  london weather had been how it notoriously was; rainy. lisa wasn’t too bothered by it, long used to the england weather by now, but that didn’t mean she didn’t all but run through the street in order to quickly enter the cafe after apparating to the right street. the cafe was crowded, but that didn’t deter lisa from putting in her order and finding a place to sit after she’d gotten it. in her case, it was tea with two sandwiches, barely having had any breakfast because she had been running late that morning.   she was doodling on an empty page of her notepad absent-mindedly when someone approached her. looking up, she immediately smiled when she saw the familiar face of daphne greengrass. daphne and her had been friends growing up, as her father knew daphne’s parents, and while they had never been particularly close she always appreciated the other woman’s company and opinions. “hi daphne,” she greeted enthusiastically. “please have a seat.” lisa moved her bag from the seat beside her own where she put it, making space for daphne to sit.  “i’m not sure what to think,” she admitted. “i think i get shacklebolt. being in charge of rebuilding the wizarding world must be a great task and he’s been at it for years now. i can’t imagine how difficult it is.” after a short pause, she added with a chuckle: “i can only really write about it. how are things at the wireless network? i’ve been meaning to come by!”

   It was a relief to run into Lisa, in the same way that it always was: they’d known each since they were younger and while they weren’t joined at the hip, there was something comfortable there. Being around her was easy, it didn’t demand anything of her in the way that Daphne’s job did. There was no need to be constantly switched-on and extroverted, which was what was expected from her. Instead, she could do what she was doing right now: drop into the seat beside Lisa with her lunch of choice and relax for a while. It was with a pleased smile that she regarded the other woman, listened to her opinion. “I can understand that,” she agreed, pausing over the matter at hand. “He’s not a stupid man, or he never would have lasted this long under the circumstances.” It was a grudging acknowledgement. “I’m just wondering who will be the candidates for the job, don’t you? I don’t envy them, they’ll have their hands full with proving themselves.” From her point of view, Shacklebolt had been shoehorned into the job because people who could handle it had been thin on the ground post-war, but he’d managed.

   Taking a sip of her coffee, Daphne smiled at Lisa’s statement on writing about all of it. “At least with you, anyone reading gets a balanced view,” she remarked, and it was quite intentionally a compliment. “Things are good at the office, you should definitely stop by sometime when you have half an hour free.” With a shrug of her shoulders and a grin, Daphne added, “Besides, we should do dinner sometime instead of random run-ins. How are things at work for you? Think you’ll be the one covering all of the new political landscape?”

Daphne prefers to be a spectator for most sports, but does enjoy flying in general.

12. biggest flaw?

Impatience is a big one; when Daphne wants something sorted out, she wants it done and over with, which is obviously not always achievable. This is frequently directed at herself as much as others, since she holds herself to a certain standard and beats herself up if she doesn’t meet it. With that said, her patience also runs thin very quickly when it comes to people behaving idiotically in her eyes.

  in seconds, daphne changed to a vague outline curled into the blankets to someone sitting up in the bed and looking at him. clearly he’d already woken her up when he arrived at the penthouse, as ever. nothing new under the horizon. “does one really miss takeout?” he queried, a question not meant to be answered, before glaring at her briefly for her remark about him probably being cold. regardless, he changed out of the jeans and into a pair of sweatpants he left laying around and subsequently took off the formal cut shirt he had been wearing, leaving him in a t-shirt. “it was good,” he replied as he worked on the buttons. “not too memorable. just good. good enough to get me to sleep fast instead of tossing and turning for hours. have you been at home the entire evening?”   with that, draco moved over to the bed. he put down his watch and ring on the chain around his neck on the nightstand and laid down on the side that she left open for him. closing his eyes briefly, he enjoyed the warmth of the blankets before he turned to face her directly. “you’re a wonderful human being,” he declared matter of fact. “how was your day? fun radio making? i had your program on in the store. figured if i really had to be there, i could at least make it fun.”

   Daphne settled in place whilst Draco moved around the room, tracked his movements for a minute or two in the barely there light before settling back into bed. A faint shiver chased through her at the cool touch of the blankets and expensive cotton sheets, but that would fade off soon enough. “If it were memorable you would’ve been back at dawn, not back by now,” she pointed out, lips curling up. They could get physical connection with others any time they wanted, but this was more about comfort and not wanting anything but that. “Had an evening in since my favourite roommate was off entertaining himself, hopefully with someone hot,” she teased with a falsely put-upon sigh; they’d both taken their turns getting back late after one night stands, after all. “Gave me a chance to rest my voice, which I’m aware is shocking.” The words were dry and very much at her own expense. “Any plans for tomorrow?”

   Shutting her eyes, Daphne stretched a little, listening to the familiar sounds of clothing being shed and pulled on before she felt the other side of the bed dip a little when Draco climbed in. When he proceeded to declare her wonderful, blond hair in a spill across the pillow next to hers, she chuckled quietly. “Right back at you,” she remarked, arm moving to wrap loosely around his waist. “I feel like I got some good responses today and the number of listeners went up for today’s song mixes as well.” Daphne’s programme was a mix of discussion based on questions of interest that she came up with, and music. It was an odd combination, but the balance kept things fun and her listener figures agreed. “What, you don’t get enough of my voice here at home, so now you take it to work?” It was another gentle tease, punctuated by Daphne curling up closer to Draco. “How was the store today? Is it still weird being out front?”

   Daphne was on her lunch break from work, and that meant that one thing and one thing only was on her mind. Coffee, and preferably a lot of it; energy for presenting required a decent amount of fuel. When she headed for her café of choice nearby, it had started to rain lightly with the typical grey skies of London weather looming overhead. It meant that she’d been grateful to get out of it, hand coming up to sweep her hair over one of her shoulders before approaching the counter. It wasn’t until she turned, order of a large coffee and a sandwich firmly in hand, bag slung over her shoulder, that she realised there were very few seats left.

   It wasn’t until she spotted an empty seat and a familiar face both that Daphne’s expression cleared a little, shoulders straightening as she approached with a smile. “Of all the cafés in London, I run into you at my work lunch spot. It’s been a bit, how have you been? What do you think of all this uproar over Shacklebolt resigning?” The papers had already been at it, and she knew at least one of the radio presenters at the WWN would be asked to pick up on it as well.

@dcphne | a closed starter.  there were a number of things that draco did habitually. fidgeting with his watch, for example, or folding his arms over one another. another of those so-called habits was sleeping around. it was actually fairly simple: emotional attachment wasn’t for him, so he did the only part of a relationship that appealed to him and left whoever he slept with in their own bed afterwards, only to return to his penthouse and his roommate. the joke was on him, as it always was, though, because while he didn’t do emotional attachment with whoever he slept with, he did do it with the person whose bed he inevitably ended up in because he felt lonely and uncomfortable in his own skin, as he did more often than he wanted to admit. that night was no exception. it was two am and draco apparated back to the correct street, where he made his way to the right apartment complex and took the elevator to the highest floor. the lights were already out in the penthouse. he kicked his boots off unceremoniously and put his coat on the peg before making his way over to his roommate’s bedroom. he knocked on the door before slipping inside. “daphne,” he said softly. “are you awake?” she probably would have woken up from the sound of his footsteps. he hadn’t tried to walk softly or anything. folding his arms over one another uncomfortably, he waited. 

   After a day of work where she did nothing but talk for entertainment purposes, Daphne was very glad to come back to the haven of the penthouse and enjoy the quiet (or, as often was the case, having a conversation with someone rather than talking at a microphone). That evening though, Draco had been out, and Daphne knew quite well that waiting up would be a lost cause unless he owled to tell her otherwise, so she didn’t. Instead, she’d had a long shower, put her feet up on the couch and ordered take-out for dinner. She’d very nearly fallen asleep on the couch, relaxed and home, and it meant that unusually, she was in bed by midnight.

  She was a light sleeper, always had been, and that meant when she heard familiar sounds around two, she shifted sleepily and pressed her face into her pillow, arms wrapping under and around it. It was the soft sound of steps that woke Daphne more fully, brown hair rumpled and brown eyes squinting a little at the outline of Draco. “I’m awake, welcome home,” she murmured, let go of her pillow and pushed herself up into a sitting position. “Come to bed, Draco? You missed takeout so I’ll have to make it up to you another night. No jeans if you’re wearing them, they’ll be cold if you’ve been outside.” Someone who didn’t know them would have interpreted her first statement altogether differently, but this was what they did, both of them, for multiple reasons. Pulling back the quilt on the opposite side and shuffling over so there was room, she smiled at him sleepily in the shadows of the room. “Good night at least?” If he didn’t want to answer, he didn’t have to and he knew it. Right after, she flopped back down against the pillows, looked up at him. “You can have the warm spot if you’re quick enough,” she added. “But I want cuddling in exchange for taking the cold side of the bed. Deal?”
