Vic gracefully wielded her katana as she listened to her mentor, halting her movements, as she answered. “Takes a lot into making one, and it’s quite rare to find the genuine ones nowadays, seeing as it’s illegal now. But as a matter of fact I have, started out as a Japanese Studies major in my first year of college. Well I was a double major, actually,” she rambled on.
“That is very true, but if you have the right connections anything can be obtained. Like say, having an old family friend who’s a chairman for the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai. Sword masters are now only allowed to produce two a month as cultural artifacts which the NBTHK then appraise and price. Anyway, I asked for a favor and it wasn’t just on a whim so my brother could own something cool. I respect it’s significance and discipline. I spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with what I could and my brother took it upon himself to honor the gift properly also. Anyway, I think that’s really awesome that you double majored. Did you double major in the same field or also study something else?”
“So many people keep complaining about the WiFi crashing and being unable to send texts or just totally losing their cool. I think we all need to simmer down and just keep a clear head because I think the bigger problem than us not being able to get out is who’s trying to get in. We should ground ourselves and find stability in the chaos because panicking won’t win and this is probably just the beginning.”
“ With this whole flickering lights ordeal, or whatever the hell is going on. I might as well make some use out of it. And yes, I am qualified to use a katana without cutting my own arm off.”
He regarded his recruit and the skillful manner in which she began to swing the glinting blade. “Katanas are really beautiful creations that involve so much dedication to master forging. I got one for my brother for our birthday when I was in Japan. Are you familiar with the art of Bushido?”
“Oh my gosh! That is a lot of blood! Sit down! Sit down!”
“It probably looks much worse than it is. I wiped off a lot and I would have taken care of it myself to save you the trouble, but I’m locked out of my room.” he replied at her urgent reaction, but complied by slumping down in a vacant chair. “Got caught in one of the spontaneous door closings. Could be worse. At least I’m not in two.”

“But if we don’t consider the past and the future, what are we even trying to accomplish? Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, like Santayana said. And if we aren’t living to create a better future, what’s the point in doing anything at all? I get that living in the moment is often better, but I don’t think it’s all we should do.”
“It isn’t about not considering it. It’s about not dwelling on it. The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly. So in a respect either is still incorporated within the present. Living wisely means having accepted and learned from the past while putting that forward daily so as to not fear the future. Then implementing the triple truth to all of living with a generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion which are the things which renew humanity.”
“Though I guess compassion tends to be something a lot of people here seem prone to forget among many other things, but that’s probably another discussion.”

Normally, Sal would feel hot shame dig into his sides and paint his cheeks red, but not tonight. He grabbed a knife from the table, twisting the handle around his finger so it wouldn’t risk poking the older man, and then ever so casually, pulling him in by the hand and continuing his dancing like nothing ever happened. “Please do, mi amor. The more the merrier.” Sal said, sending the knife flying when he had the target in his sights and laughing when it hit, his mood skyrocketing simply because of good music and company.
He was unperturbed by the sharp instrument and even less so when as it faced away from him and the other had accepted his request. Once again the knife pierced through the air and hit a perfect bullseye, Eos providing a laugh in return as they danced in what some would find an odd situation to be in. Who ever said training couldn’t be fun? “I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before. Are you a recruit? because I’ll say you show a lot of promise.” he grinned genuinely. It was quite refreshing to get a bit of liveliness around here coupled with skill. This recruit seemed to show a good balance.
“Now I’m a rather benevolent person, if I do say so myself — but to whoever ate my sandwich, you’ve crossed the line, kiddo. It’s only a matter of time before I find you, so might as well ‘fess up now while I’m feeling less ruthless.”
“It may have been a mentor just to mess with you. I wouldn’t allow yourself to get too upset over it. Or Maybe whoever it is plans on making it up to you somehow later. If it’s any consolation I can make you sandwich?”
When Sal happened to decide he wanted to practice his knife throwing, he didn’t exactly plan it to end like this. Not that he was complaining really. At a glance, it would seem that he was just wasting his time, blasting salsa music on his speakers and shaking his hips in the most fun loving and inappropriate looking ways, but when you looked closer, every time Sal took a turn, every time his hands sent those knives flying, they hit their targets every time. Sal had no shame in singing along as he went, “Ay, no ay que llorar, que la vida es un carnaval, y es mejor vivir cantando. Ay, no ay que llorar, que la vida es un carnaval, y las penas se van cantando.”
Eos couldn’t help but follow the sounds of lively music and though there have been many times in his life he’s been called a gringo which with all reason since that’s just what he was, but this gringo could still pick out the Salsa Queen Celia Cruz anywhere. The origins of the latino jam had lead him to one of the training rooms. Peering in he was impressed at the sight of tempo swaying hips matched with precision sailing of knives towards it’s target. The mentor entered the room with a smile adorning his lips as his own hips couldn’t deny the beckoning of the music. “May I cut in?”
Atum, Horus, Osiris, Thoth
Atum: What are your greatest imperfections?
This is difficult to answer. My imperfections aren’t something I really keep track of and accepting myself has helped being unable to really pinpoint things I would find “wrong” with myself.
Horus: What is one thing you’ve had to fight for in your life?
Who I am today. It isn’t easy to try and discover yourself and what path to take in life. There’s a lot of struggles to overcome and you almost have to reset your default settings in your mind and in your heart to really open yourself up and lead a better existence. We can be our own worst enemies and the greatest victory is over self. (Eos has been an advocate for a lot of things, but he definitely feels like keeping his anger at bay and being a positive person despite a lot things is a big personal accomplishment.)
Osiris: Do you believe in the underworld?
Yes, I do. I think there’s enough text and strong mythology across so many cultures and religions. Some which share similarities though being on totally opposite sides of the world and when those things occur I always feel like there’s some truth to it. There’s always a balance in the world so where there’s a Nirvana there must be a Narakas though where it differs would be on the eternity matter since there’s the belief of reincarnation which means your stay in either place isn’t eternal.
Thoth: Do you like to read/write?
Definitely. I think I probably read more than I write, but both are awesome and great outlets. Knowledge is so important and there’s so many wonderful books and philosophies and writers out there which can help expand your views and your mind and give you a better understanding of things.

Hekate: Have you ever tried to communicate with the dead?
I think it depends on your definition of “communicate”. I think the dead should be left alone and people shouldn’t mess with things they don’t understand. It can end up being something very dangerous if you don’t pay your proper respects and such or just be generally careless. There’s a certain way things should be done and if you don’t go about it correctly then you shouldn’t at all.
Hœnir: Are you a silent or talkative person?
Both, it’s always good to know when it’s the right time for either. I like to talk about a lot of things and can go on for hours if I’m talking with the right person and we’re both very engaged, but I also like to listen and sometimes it isn’t really about talking. It’s just about the presence of being there with someone even if its in silence. Silence can be a very beautiful thing.
Ra: Do you have any major responsibilities or importance?
I suppose being a mentor is consider a major responsibility since I’m supposed to help guide someone to being a part of the future of Olympus. Mostly I think I’ve tasked myself with the human responsibility of being a humanitarian and doing what I can for others. I think maintaining the balance between my brother and I is also important.
Cernunnos: What is your favorite animal?
Ohh man this is hard. I love animals so much. Probably elephants are definitely in my top 3. There’s something so human about them. They’re very understanding and compassionate creatures. I don’t think people realize the depth of their empathy and their intelligence. They have memories far better than our own. Sacred in many cultures and with good reason.

Ares: Are you an easy person to anger?
Nope. I’ve got a lot of patience and dealing with negativity or someone you don’t like is something you still need to do from a place of compassion. Anger is a pretty gnarly thing and it weighs way too heavy on the heart. It’s kinda like how Buddha said, “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” I try not to allow myself to harbor those kinds of feelings. (He can get angry, but it takes a lot. I’d actually be very interested in someone managing to piss him off cause he does have a dark side very deep down that he covers up with all this enlightenment.)
